[Syndromic gingival fibromatosis].

INTRODUCTION: Gingival fibromatosis is an inherited disease of the gingival tissue causing proliferative fibrous lesions occurring alone or as one feature of a more widespread syndrome. OBSERVATION: A 26-year-old girl consulted the oral surgery department for a functional problem due to the presence of two tumor masses located in the palate. The histological diagnosis was gingival fibromatosis. The presence of skeletal disorders in this patient with gingival fibromatosis suggested the diagnosis of Zimmermann Laband syndrome. DISCUSSION: Gingival fibromatosis is a rare condition characterized

Diffuse gingival enlargement.

Diffuse gingival enlargement is defined as an excessive growth of periodontal tissue. It can be considered a relatively common finding, as thousands of patients have been described in the literature. Patients may seek medical attention because of pain, tenderness, interference with speech and/or mastication, halitosis, or unsightly appearance, or gingival enlargement may be an unexpected finding on routine physical examination. Diffuse gingival enlargement has numerous causes, including poor dental hygiene, medications, serious systemic illnesses, genetic conditions, other specific physiologic

The aetiology of gingival recession.

Gingival recession affects a large proportion of the adult population. This paper discusses the aetiology and mechanisms behind the formation of gingival recession, and considers the relevance of gingival recession to both orthodontics and restorative dentistry. It is followed by a second paper on the management of gingival recession.

Treatment of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is an intriguing and complex phenomenon. Patients frequently are disturbed by recession owing to sensitivity and esthetics. Many techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession, including connective tissue grafting, or CTG; various flap designs; orthodontics; and guided tissue regeneration, or GTR. The authors reviewed human clinical studies to assess which techniques provided optimal results. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors reviewed controlled clinical trials to assess the outcome of gingival grafting. They also included histological studies

Heterogeneity in the gingival fibromatoses.

Forty-nine cases of isolated familial and idiopathic gingival fibromatoses, consisting of 12 cases from six families and 37 cases of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis, were reviewed. Pedigrees of five families revealed various penetrances and genetic heterogeneity as suggested by the presence of both autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritances. Ultrastructurally, the lesions were composed of fibroblast-like cells and myofibroblast-like cells, with the former being the predominant cell type. The 267 cases of familial and idiopathic gingival fibromatoses were analyzed, and they with o

[Gingival changes in pregnancy].

Pregnancy represent a particular sistemic condition able to induce, because the tissutal metabolism is upset, an increase replay of the gingival tissues, caused by local factors as plaque and tartar. In this study are described effects determined from the increment ormone on the periodontal tissues, the alterations of the salivar components in pregnancy and the therapy to follow to reach as soon as possible the recovery.

[Etiology of gingival recessions].

About every third patient of our department suffers from gingival recessions (g. r.): 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987 altogether 1039 patients from 4022. People at the age of 20-25 years are mainly affected: 44.4% of these patients in the age-group of 20-25 years suffer from g. r., 28.3% of patients suffering from l.P.a. are 20-25 years old. Patients diseased with g. r. (N = 60) show functional disturbances (79% at the 1st bicuspid, 72% at the 2nd bicuspid) during their occlusion movements to a great extent. Patients afflected by g.r. (N = 20) show in comparison to healthy people a smaller diameter of

Cyclosporine and gingival overgrowth.

A case of cyclosporine-induced gingival overgrowth is presented. Overgrown and inflamed gingivae were noted at several sites in the mouth of a patient taking cyclosporine following a renal transplant. These were associated with areas adjacent to heavy plaque and calculus deposits on the teeth. Histological examination of the overgrown tissues revealed fibro-epithelial changes characterized by elongated rete pegs, myxomatous degeneration of the connective tissue associated with dense infiltration of plasma cells and lymphocytes. The fibroblasts from normal and overgrown sites were studied in vi

Embryogenesis of the gingival cyst.

The embryogenesis of gingival cysts derived from the dental lamina was studied histologically in paraffin prepared sections of 10 pairs of human fetal jaws and in individual celloidin sections of human fetal skulls. Cystic degeneration in the dental lamina was noted as early as 10 weeks in utero prior to the separation of the developing tooth bud. Rapid proliferation and growth of such cysts was seen in 15-20 week old embryos during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth development after fragmentation of the lamina had occurred. Islands, strands and nests of dental lamina epithelium were di
