[Necrotizing mucosal ulcers cause by anaerobic bacteria. Fusiform bacterial and spirochete infections].

Vincent's angina (Plaut-Vincent) is the most prominent disease caused by coinciding infections from fusibacteria and spirochaeta both belonging to obligate anaerobic bacteria. A possible symbiotic infection of both anaerobics may become manifest on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity and the oropharynx beside the tonsillas. The clinical outcome may be different and pose difficulties in the differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 29 year old female patient with necrotizing ulcera of the soft palate suspicious for stomatitis ulceromembranacea. In case necrotizing inflammations of the

Contact dermatitis from propolis.

Two patients with contact dermatitis due to the natural product propolis (bee glue) are reported. They presented perioral eczema and stomatitis which were recalcitrant until propolis was considered as the cause. Patch tests with propolis preparations were positive in both patients, and, furthermore, in the second patient the lesions relapsed after provocation tests. European standard patch test including balsam of Peru were negative. The complexity of propolis, its supposed anti-inflammatory effect due to flavonoids, and the sensitizing agents originating mainly from the poplar trees are discu

Treatment of plaque-induced gingivitis, chronic periodontitis, and other clinical conditions.

The inflammatory components of plaque induced gingivitis and chronic periodontitis can be managed effectively for the majority of patients with a plaque control program and non-surgical and/or surgical root debridement coupled with continued periodontal maintenance procedures. Some patients may need additional therapeutic procedures. All of the therapeutic modalities reviewed in this position paper may be utilized by the clinician at various times over the long-term management of the patient's periodontal condition.

Update on human cytomegalovirus in destructive periodontal disease.

AIM: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a herpesvirus, is discussed in this review as it relates to destructive periodontal disease in humans. RESULTS: HCMV genomic sequences, detected by polymerase chain reaction identification, occur with elevated frequency in severe adult periodontitis, localized and generalized aggressive (juvenile) periodontitis, Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome periodontitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, and periodontal abscesses. DISCUSSION: Herpesviruses establish lifelong persistent infections. HCMV infection involves an asymptomatic latent phase interrupted by peri

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: Case series of an under-recognized entity.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a mucocutaneous condition characterized by chronic relapsing and remitting oral ulcers and erosions. This condition remains under-recognized among dermatopathologists, possibly because of common misdiagnosis as oral erosive lichen planus (LP). We report five cases of CUS in order to raise awareness of this uncommon condition. All patients presented with desquamative gingivitis and/or oral erosions, with biopsies showing lichenoid mucositis and epithelial nuclear IgG deposition on direct immunofluorescence. Recognition of the characteristic direct immunofl

Seventeen New Cases of Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis with Literature Review.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a poorly understood disease with clinical and histologic overlap with lichen planus (LP). Unlike classic LP, direct immunofluorescence (DIF) studies in cases of CUS exhibit a granular pattern of IgG in nuclei of basal and parabasal cells. This study assesses the demographic, clinical, histologic, and DIF features of CUS. It is important to differentiate CUS from LP and other vesiculobullous diseases (VBD) because lesions of CUS are resistant to steroid therapy, which is typically used to control LP and VBD. A literature review and IRB-approved retrospecti

Bacteria in the mouth.

There are many infectious agents found within the oral cavity. Bacteria form an important group of micro-organisms found in both healthy and diseased mouths. The current article will discuss those bacteria resident within the mouth and review the oral diseases with which they are associated.

A Behçet-like disease presenting as ulcerative stomatitis and scarring pustular lesions of the face.

Behçet's disease is a complex multisystem disease of unknown origin. It presents clinically as oral, pharyngeal, and genital ulcerations, uveitis, and inflammatory papulopustules. Diagnosis is made clinically since laboratory and histologic observations are not specific. We present a patient who, despite the absence of eye and genital lesions, seems best viewed as having Behçet's disease.

Progressive osseous destruction as a complication of HIV-periodontitis.

A pathologic condition is described, characterized by rampant necrosis of gingival mucosa, periodontium, and related osseous structures associated with systemic infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is believed that this condition is an extension beyond the normal clinical course of HIV-periodontitis (HIV-P) and manifests itself in three progressive stages: (1) HIV-associated gingivitis, (2) HIV-P, and (3) an extension of HIV-P to osseous necrosis. Two cases of osseous destruction attending HIV-P are reported, one of which led to initial diagnosis of HIV infection. They rep
