Blood warming during hemofiltration can improve hemodynamics and outcome in ovine septic shock.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of blood warming during hemofiltration on global and regional hemodynamics, plasma lactate, and 24-h survival during septic shock. METHODS: Twenty anesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep underwent induction of peritonitis and, 4 h later, were treated by hemofiltration with (n = 10) or without (n = 10) blood warming. RESULTS: In the group without blood warming, body temperature decreased after starting hemofiltration and remained below baseline. In the other animals, body temperature stabilized at baseline level during hemofil

Reversible Atlantic overturning despite continued Greenland ice sheet melt.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is considered vulnerable to irreversible weakening or collapse under global warming and related Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) melt, yet its resilience to either forcing remains poorly constrained. Here, we use a carbon dioxide emission-driven Earth system model with an interactive GrIS to assess AMOC reversibility under a range of idealized carbon dioxide emission pathways that produce near-linear global warming up to 10 kelvins (K), stabilization across 1.5 to 9 K, and subsequent cooling. We find that although the AMOC reaches threshold-defi…

The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018.

Global aviation operations contribute to anthropogenic climate change via a complex set of processes that lead to a net surface warming. Of … ud interactions for soot and sulfate remain undetermined. CO2-warming-equivalent emissions based on global warming potentials (GWP* method) indicate that aviation emissions are currently warming the climate at approximately three times the rate of that associated with aviation CO2 emissions alone. CO2 and NOx aviation emissions and cloud effects remain a continu …

The impact of winter and spring temperatures on temperate tree budburst dates: results from an experimental climate manipulation.

Budburst phenology is a key driver of ecosystem structure and functioning, and it is sensitive to global change. Both cold winter temperatures (chilling) and spring warming (forcing) are important for budburst. Future climate warming is expected to have a contrasting effect on chilling and forcing, and subsequently to have a non-linear effect on budburst timing. To clarify the different effects of warming during chilling and forcing phases of budburst phenology in deciduous trees, (i) we conducted a temperature manipulation experiment, with separate winter and spring warming treatments on well

Imminent rapid decline of the Indonesian Throughflow after reaching a turning point of CO2 concentration.

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) represents the only tropical inter-ocean pathway of global ocean circulation and plays a central role in the Earth's climate system. Climate models suggest that the ITF would be weakened under global warming, but historical observations indicate a contradictory trend. Here using CMIP6 simulations, we find that the response of the ITF to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is nonlinear and exhibits an abrupt rapid decline after surpassing a turning point. The ITF's decline can be explained by the response of its halosteric and thermosteric …

Maternal and Cold-Stratification Warming Outweigh Germination-phase Warming in Regulating Seed Germination of Alpine Plants.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Global warming impacts on key plant life-history stages represent a central focus in ecology. Seed germination, the critical starting point in the plant life cycle, lacks a systematic understanding of its response mechanisms to climate warming. METHODS: Here, we examined how warming at the maternal, cold stratification, and germination stages affects seed germination in ten alpine plant species. KEY RESULTS: Cold stratification (absence vs. presence) is decisive in regulating seed dormancy, but its effect is modulated by temperatures experienced during both the maternal …

[Response of Soil Microbial Necromass Carbon and Community Structure to Warming and Nitrogen Addition in an Alpine Swamp Meadow].

Climate change, especially global warming and increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, has become a major driver of carbon cycle in terrestrial ecosystems. To the role of microbial residues in soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation and identify their controlling factors under climate change scenarios, a field experiment was conducted in an alpine swamp meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The experiment included four treatments: control group, warming, N addition, and combined warming with N addition. Soil microbial necromass carbon (MNC) was quantified by separately assessing fungal ne…

Coupled increases in pelagic fish productivity and export productivity during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum.

Ocean productivity is sensitive to climate change, and its decline in recent decades has profoundly impacted the biosphere. Yet its long-term trajectory under global warming remains a topic lacking consensus. To address this question, we use paired ichthyolith and marine barite accumulation rates to investigate marine productivity and associated biological responses during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. We find a widespread increase in pelagic fish productivity, particularly in the Pacific and North Atlantic, that closely tracks export productivity in trend and spatial pattern, suggesti…

Oxygen supersaturation has negligible effects on warming tolerance across diverse aquatic ectotherms.

Under the midday sun, when photosynthesizers are producing oxygen, shallow aquatic ecosystems can become supersaturated with oxygen (>100% air saturation) while they simultaneously peak in water temperature. It has been suggested that oxygen supersaturation could protect water-breathing animals from mortality during heatwaves because of the potential role of oxygen in governing thermal tolerance. Here, we conducted a circumglobal assessment of the effects of ecologically relevant oxygen supersaturation (150%, hyperoxia) on warming tolerance (here, measured using critical thermal maximum, CTmax

Thermally resistant coral Stylophora pistillata survives but does not thrive under chronic elevated baseline temperature.

Coral reefs are threatened worldwide from unprecedented increases in ocean temperatures, resulting in corals gradually living closer to their maximum thermal threshold. With ocean temperatures expected to warm up to 3 °C by 2100, understanding the effects of chronic elevated baseline temperature is important in determining the thermal physiological limits of corals and developing realistic restoration strategies to ensure the future of coral reefs. Here, we tested the effects of 26 weeks (i.e., six months) of elevated temperatures of + 2.5 °C (27.5 °C) and + 5 °C (30 °C) above a baseline of 25

Potential for Regional Resilience to Ocean Warming and Acidification Extremes: Projected Vulnerability Under Contrasting Pathways and Thresholds.

We analyze the frequency and amplitude of projected warming and ocean acidification extremes under high CO2 and strongly mitigating scenarios. We find interpretational differences in projections arising from methodological choices associated with specification of stressor thresholds. Use of absolute versus distribution-based thresholds, and, in the distribution-based case, the inclusion or exclusion of seasonal variability, can lead to very different regional patterns in projected stress. The choice of fixed versus adaptive baseline, for example, determines whether future stress frequency in t

The influence of cross-generational warming on the juvenile development of a coral reef fish under ocean warming and acidification.

Marine ecosystems are facing escalating chronic and acute environmental stressors, yet our understanding of how multiple stressors influence individuals is limited. Here, we investigated how projected ocean warming (+1.5 °C) during grandparental (F1) and parental (F2) generations of the spiny chromis damselfish (Acanthochromis polyacanthus), influences the sensitivity of F3 juveniles to ocean warming (present-day vs +1.5 °C) and/or elevated CO2 (490 μatm vs 825 μatm). After 16 weeks of exposure, aerobic physiology (resting oxygen consumption, maximum oxygen consumption, and absolute aerobic sc

Warming induces unexpectedly high soil respiration in a wet tropical forest.

Tropical forests are a dominant regulator of the global carbon cycle, exchanging more carbon dioxide with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Climate models predict unprecedented climatic warming in tropical regions in the coming decades; however, in situ field warming studies are severely lacking in tropical forests. Here we present results from an in situ warming experiment in Puerto Rico, where soil respiration responses to +4 oC warming were assessed half-hourly for a year. Soil respiration rates were 42-204% higher in warmed relative to ambient plots, representing some of the

Vulnerability of older adults to heatwaves: the Barcelona case.

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, intense, and persistent as a result of global warming, posing a growing public health challenge in Mediterranean cities. In Barcelona, this process is characterized by a pronounced increase in nighttime temperatures, amplified by the urban heat island effect and by a rapidly aging population, which together increase vulnerability to heat-related health impacts. This study aims to assess the effects of high temperatures on mortality in Barcelona, with a particular focus on older adults, and to determine the relative importance of nighttime vs. daytime heat.…

Detection of emergent multiple predator effects in a warming world.

Predicting the influence of predators on food webs remains challenging, particularly when multiple predator species share a common prey species. In these cases, interactive effects (termed 'emergent' multiple predator effects; MPEs) can cause predators to have stronger or weaker effects on their prey than would be expected independently. Many studies highlight the ubiquity of MPEs, however, recent work has shown that failure to account for nonlinear but fundamentally predictable drivers of predation rate (e.g. prey depletion, prey body size, temperature, etc.) can bias predictions used to dete

A study on greenhouse gas emissions from asphalt pavement cross-sections: a comparison between roadside and central areas.

This study employed a greenhouse gas flux monitoring system equipped with LI-COR 7810/7820 portable trace gas analyzers to measure daily fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O across asphalt pavement sections during three time periods (8:00-9:00 AM, 1:00-2:00 PM, 6:00-7:00 PM). Using high-frequency data obtained from the analyzers, precise fluxes were calculated via an exponential fitting model in SoilFluxPro software. A comprehensive assessment, integrating spatiotemporal statistical analysis and global warming potential (GWP), was conducted. The results revealed the following: (i) Spatial distribution:…

Leveraging explainable AI to predict soil respiration sensitivity and its drivers for climate change mitigation.

Global warming is one of the most pressing and critical problems facing the world today. It is mainly caused by the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO2). Understanding how soils respond to rising temperatures is critical for predicting carbon release and informing climate mitigation strategies. Q10, a measure of soil microbial respiration, quantifies the increase in CO2 release caused by a [Formula: see text] Celsius rise in temperature, serving as a key indicator of this sensitivity. However, predicting Q10 across diverse soil types remains a challenge,…
