BACKGROUND: Overweight and obese women with gestational diabetes mellitus are at increased risk for adverse perinatal outcomes, and they are also more likely to have suboptimal glycemic control. However, there is a paucity of data evaluating whether lower glycemic targets could improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of intensive glycemic control in overweight and obese women with gestational diabetes mellitus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We randomized 60 overweight or obese women with gestational diabetes mellitus, diagnosed between 12 and 32 weeks' gestation to either intensive

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormone (TH) variations, even within the normal range, influence cardiometabolic health. In type 1 diabetes (T1D), optimizing glycemic control and cardiovascular risk is crucial to prevent complications. We aim to explore the association of TH within normal range with cardiometabolic profile in T1D.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis including adult patients with T1D followed at our Endocrinology Department between 2022-2024. We excluded patients with TSH or fT4 outside the reference range. Associations between TH (TSH, fT4, fT3 and fT3/fT4 ratio) and gl

BACKGROUND: Glycemia control in older diabetic adults is complicated by uncertainty regarding how intensive glycemic control should be, particularly in those with frailty. This study investigated the association between HbA1c levels and all-cause mortality, assessing the modifying effect of frailty. METHODS/DESIGN: This retrospective study used Hong Kong hospitalization data (2012–2021) for older adults. Patients with first-recorded diabetes during 2014–2020 were classified as index cases. Frailty was evaluated using the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS), derived from two years of hospitaliza

This is an observational study of interstitial glucose (IG) concentrations, IG variability and dietary intake under free-living conditions in 46 females with obesity but without diabetes. We used continuous glucose monitoring, open-ended food recording and step monitoring during regular dietary intake followed by a low-energy diet (LED). Thirty-nine participants completed both study periods. The mean BMI at baseline was 43.6 ± 6.2 kg/m2. Three weeks of LED resulted in a mean weight loss of 5.2% with a significant reduction in diurnal IG concentration but with greater glycemic variability obser

This study comprised 2 experiments that tested the hypothesis that a high-amylose starch diet (AMO) would improve body weight and glycemic control relative to a high-amylopectin starch diet (AMN) in rats with diet-induced obesity. After inducing obesity with a high-fat and -energy diet (Expt. 1), male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 46) were divided into 4 groups and given free or restricted access to either an AMN or an AMO diet for 4 wk (Expt. 2). After 3 wk, rats from each group underwent an oral glucose tolerance test. At the end of the experiment, food-deprived rats were killed by decapitation a

Postprandial hyperglycemia is a key driver in the development of type 2 diabetes, and dietary starch is a major modulator of glycemic response. The crystalline structure of starch is a principal determinant of its digestibility and postprandial glycemic response. This review synthesizes evidence establishing that the molecular packing density and stability of A-, B-, and V-type crystals often outweigh the influence of crystallinity or crystalline type alone in governing digestion resistance. We demonstrate how advanced processing techniques can precisely engineer these structural features to r

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a ubiquitous air pollutant. Recent studies suggest that SO2 is a momentous risk factor for diabetes mellitus (DM). The present investigation aimed to evaluate the effects of SO2 exposure on histopathology and morphometry of pancreatic islet cells and serum glycemic indices in rats. Sixteen male Wistar rats were divided equally into SO2 and control groups. SO2 group was exposed to 10 parts per million (ppm) SO2 for 5 weeks (6 days a week, 3 h/day) and control group to filtered air for the same time as SO2 group. Blood serums were collected and pancreatic tissue isolated.

It is the purpose of this viewpoint article to delineate the regulatory network of growth hormone (GH), insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signalling during puberty, associated hormonal changes in adrenal and gonadal androgen metabolism, and the impact of dietary factors and smoking involved in the pathogenesis of acne. The key regulator IGF-1 rises during puberty by the action of increased GH secretion and correlates well with the clinical course of acne. In acne patients, associations between serum levels of IGF-1, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, dihydrotestosterone, acne les
