I-131 treatment of Basedow's disease is effective and safe. Relatively high energy doses to the thyroid in the range of 150-200 Gray are needed in endemic goiter areas, where immunogenic hyperthyroidism may coincide with functional autonomy. Induction of euthyroidism by low doses of antithyroid drugs (methimazole, carbimazole) before I-131 treatment prevents complications and has no significant influence on outcome of I-131 therapy. As compared to alternative therapeutic modalities, the risks of I-131 are low.

BACKGROUND: Goiter is a common condition in Sudan, often presenting with a wide range of clinical features. While the risk of malignancy in long-standing goiters is generally considered low, it remains a clinical concern, especially with a prolonged disease duration. Surgical intervention should be considered in managing goiters of prolonged duration to mitigate this risk.

To shed some light on the physicochemical properties of the thyroid follicular colloid, we have screened retrospectively the autoradiographs of 60 human nodular goiters labeled 17 h preoperatively with 100 microCi 125I for evidence of colloid compartmentalization. Analysis of 395 thyroidectomies, in a tropical region of endemic goiter and in a Hospital Department without any mean of investigation of thyroid gland, led to the establishment of the following facts: Prevalence of female sex is clear (72.1 p.c.). Thyrotoxicosis appears to be infrequent (1.5 p.c.). Cancer of thyroid strikes 7.8 p.c. of the operated patients. Operative morbidity is 3 p.c. Lesions of the recurrent laryngeal nerve have been observed in 3.8 p.c. of the patients. Then these results are examined in light of the date of known publications.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the urinary iodine concentration in Gorgan located in northern Iran, which is a cosmopolitan society and on the basis of such determination the endemic goiter in the region could be estimated. Endocrinological Out-Patients Clinic at Children's Hospital in Dziekanów Leśny takes care of the children from Mazovia region. Hormonal findings in children with simple goiter were analyzed in several groups of patients. In all those patients preferential T3-secretion and decreased T4 production was found. These findings allow to conclude, that in Mazovia region there is iodine deficiency, which is probably the main cause of goiter development.
