Regulation of lung cell proliferation by polypeptide growth factors.

In the last 10 years there has been an increased appreciation of the changes in lung cell populations that occur in association with the acute respiratory failure often induced by traumatic injury. Early events result in an accumulation in the lung of platelets, neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages, a release of substances having potent cardiopulmonary and metabolic effects, and an ensuing edema and transudation of materials from the interstitium and capillaries into the alveoli. Further progression of the injury results in significant decreases in the number of endothelial and type I epith

Optic nerve regeneration--new aspects.

Injury to the optic nerve and its environment provokes a process of degeneration that leads to a degenerative process resulting in an irreversible loss of visual function. We succeeded in stimulating regeneration in injured optic nerves of adult rabbits. The stimulus to regeneration was achieved by implanting in injured optic nerves of adult rabbits substances originating from growing (regenerating) optic nerves of fish or developing optic nerves of neonatal rabbits, and by delaying the degenerative process by irradiating the injured optic nerve with a low energy laser. The effect was manifest

Latent Growth Modeling Trajectories of Cultural Values and Parental Monitoring as Predictors of Alcohol, Cigarette, and Drug Use Initiation Among Mexican-Origin Youth.

Substance use initiation during adolescence is a critical predictor of long-term dependency and adverse health outcomes, with Latino youth demonstrating disproportionately high rates of early use. This study examined how developmental trajectories of cultural values (CVs) and parental monitoring predict substance use initiation in a cohort of Mexican-origin youth followed from 5th to 11th grade. Data from the California Families Project (n = 674) were analyzed using latent growth modeling to assess the independent and combined influence of these trajectories on the odds of initiating alcohol,

Effect of spermatocele fluid on growth of human prostatic cells in culture.

The present study was carried out to investigate whether testicular fluid derived from a spermatocele contains substance(s) that promote the growth of human prostatic cells in culture. Human spermatocele fluid was centrifuged to sediment spermatozoa. The supernatant was then added to cultures of human prostatic stromal or epithelial cells that were isolated from surgical specimens of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Addition of spermatocele fluid in quantities of 1 microgram/ml of protein resulted in a significant increase in the number of both prostatic stromal and epithelial cells at the end of

In vitro efficacy of four potential antimicrobial substances against Klebsiella species and Streptococcus uberis isolated from bovine mastitis.

Mastitis is an important disease in dairy cattle with huge influence on animal welfare and economic situation of farmers. With very limited choices in antibiotic therapy of bovine mastitis and the relevance of emerging antimicrobial resistances, discovery of new antimicrobials is one of the major challenges for veterinary pharmacological research. Thus, in vitro efficacy of four promising substances was investigated: polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine (PVP iodine), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), N-chlorotaurine (NCT), and methylglyoxal (MGO). PVP iodine is an antiseptic commonly used in all medical fields.

Effects of prebiotics and precision biotics on performance, animal welfare and environmental impact. A review.

This review aims to analyze the recent studies about prebiotics and precision biotics, as alternatives to animal growth promoters. These substances improve intestinal health, growth performance and poultry environmental impact. Prebiotics are insoluble fibers, that have no nutritive value, but they promote the growth of positive bacteria, increase the nutrients absorption and modulate the immune response. Instead, precision biotics are carbohydrates with glycosidic linkages, which interact with gut bacteria metabolism, reducing the excretion of nitrogen and consequentially, the poultry environ

Manipulation of endogenous neural stem cells following ischemic brain injury.

The use of cell-based therapy is a valid therapeutic approach to ischemic brain injury. Endogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) have been identified in the central nervous system where they reside largely in the subventricular zone and in the subgranular zone of the hippocampus. Endogenous NSCs are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into functional brain cells. This paper summarizes the evidence recently gathered in support of a therapeutic role for endogenous NSCs in acute experimental stroke.

Modulation of angiogenesis in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome.

Current investigations have revealed that angiogenesis plays a role in the pathogenesis of high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia, and in the mechanisms of disease progression. Secretion of cytokines and growth factors modulates angiogenesis in the marrow leading to increased vascularity and sustenance of the clonal population. For high-risk MDS patients older than 60 years who are not eligible for aggressive chemotherapy or stem cell transplant, there are few therapeutic options other than supportive treatment. Recent delineation of the pathobiology of MDS has res

Interactions of cytokines, growth factors, and the extracellular matrix in the cellular biology of uterine leiomyomata.

OBJECTIVE: To review the available information regarding the role of cytokines, growth factors, and the extracellular matrix in the pathophysiology of uterine leiomyomata and to integrate this information in a suggested model of disease at the cellular level. DESIGN: A thorough literature and MEDLINE search was conducted to identify the relevant studies in the English literature published between January, 1966 and October, 2001. A model of disease at the cellular level was developed using the most likely cytokines to be involved in the pathogenesis of leiomyomata as determined by our assessme

Oncogenes, growth factors, and autoimmune diseases (review).

Autoimmune diseases are benign proliferative diseases characterized by the expansion and activation of the autoreactive immune cells and the proliferation of connective tissue elements. Because both cytokines and oncogenes products are necessary for expansion of immune cells, it is possible that inappropriate activation of oncogenes might influence cytokine and lymphokine secretion as well as the expression of immune response genes necessary for the development of autoimmunity in a susceptible individual. At least four gene families of the immune system are involved in the induction and perpet

Sex Differences in Recovery Capital Gains Post-Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: People with substance use disorders are highly prevalent in the carceral system. Recovery capital (RC) is the resources available to an individual to initiate or maintain substance use cessation. Sex differences have been identified in RC during both active substance use and recovery in the general population, however, less is known about these sex differences in the post-incarceration population. METHODS: Participants (n = 136) were those with an opioid or stimulant use disorder with past year involvement with the Iowa criminal justice system (USA), who completed the Assessment o

The growth inhibitory role and potential clinical value of macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha in myeloid leukaemias.

The control of primitive haemopoietic progenitor cell proliferation in vitro can be achieved with combinations of growth stimulatory cytokines. Acting in apparent opposition to these growth stimulators are growth inhibitory substances, including prostaglandins, cytokines and chemokines which bind to specific cognate cell surface receptors and promote signal transduction events that interfere with cellular proliferation. Within the bone marrow microenvironment, significant quantities of both growth inhibitors and growth promoters can be detected. The ratio of their concentrations within microen

Isolation, characterization, and antifungal behavior of humic acid and fulvic acid fractions from biowaste-derived vermiproducts.

Humic substances, formed through the decomposition of plant and animal matter, are prevalent world-wide. These substances primarily consist of humin, humic acid (HA), and fulvic acid (FA). There is existing evidence for antifungal properties of these humic constituents. This study aimed to isolate and determine the humic materials derived from organic materials and vermicompost produced using Perionyx excavatus, and to evaluate their antifungal activity against human fungal pathogens, specifically Candida species. Characterization of the humic and FAs was conducted using various techniques, UV
