In the present study we examined the effects of chlorpheniramine and ranitidine, indomethacin, BW755C (an inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase and lipo-oxygenase enzymes of arachidonic acid metabolism), dexamethasone, and capsaicin on nonimmunologic contact urticaria (NICU) induced in the guinea pig ear by benzoic, acid cinnamic acid, cinnamic aldehyde, methyl nicotinate, diethyl fumarate, or dimethyl sulfoxide. Guinea pigs have varying plasma triglyceride concentrations ranging from 28 to 1392 mg/dl, with relatively uniform plasma cholesterol and phospholipid levels. Conscious guinea pigs were used to study the development of burn shock as a function of the size of thermal injury to the body surface. The guinea pig maximization test was used to study the sensitizing potential of cobalt chloride; 1 % CoCl2 was used for injection and 5 % for topical application. The animals were challenged twice; in series I epicutaneous testing was performed 3 weeks after sensitization and intradermal testing after yet another week. Propylene glycol, previously indicated to be ototoxic and to produce "deafness," was studied in the middle ear space of guinea pigs. Ninety percent propylene glycol produced conductive middle ear problems, but there was no loss of hair cells above that found in normal untreated animals. Ten percent propylene glycol produced no negative effects in the middle ear or elsewhere. Topical ear drops containing high concentrations of propylene glycol are contraindicated in cases with perforation of the tympanic membrane.

The susceptibility of five inbred strains of mice, designated DBA/1J, DBA/2J, C57BL/6J, Balf/CJ, and AKR/J, as well as outbred Hartley and Moen-Chase guinea pigs to infection with Coxiella burnetii by several routes was studied. The DBA/2J mice were more susceptible to infection and had higher mortality rates than other strains of mice. Guinea pigs were more susceptible to infection than mice. Lesions observed in the infected animals were similar to those previously described in man and experimentally infected animals.

Osteodentin formation in guinea pig teeth was studied using in vivo microscopic and histologic techniques. The coronal half of both incisors and molars contained varying amounts of osteodentin. Within the osteodentin, narrow canals that contained pulp tissue were observed. Serial histologic sections demonstrated that these canals opened to the occlusal surface thereby exposing the pulp to the oral cavity.

Free-living amebas of the genus Naegleria, of world-wide distribution and long considered harmless, have been linked etiologically with 57 fatal cases of primary amebic meningoencephalitis during the last decade. Naegleria from cultures derived from one of these fatal cases in Richmond, Virginia, have been inoculated intranasally, intraorally, into the conjunctival sac near the inner canthus of the eyes, and into induced skin lesions in adult germfree guinea pigs.
