A major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer is infection. Resveratrol, a polyphenolic phytoalexin, is produced by plants in response to infection and has antibacterial activity. Haemophilus ducreyi is a Gram-negative bacterium that is the causative agent of the sexually transmitted disease chancroid. Haemophilus ducreyi, the etiologic agent of chancroid, expresses variants of several key virulence factors. While previous reports suggested that H. ducreyi strains formed two clonal populations, the differences between, and diversity within, these populations were unclear. A 6-year old girl was admitted to our hospital with high fever and right upper quadrant abdominal pain. At 5 years of age she had undergone allogeneic bone marrow transplantation because of intractable congenital pure red cell aplasia, after which she had asymptomatic cholelithiasis. Haemophilus ducreyi is the causative agent of the sexually transmitted disease chancroid. We have identified a hemolytic activity expressed by H. ducreyi. This activity is most readily detected when horse erythrocytes are used as a target; however, low levels of activity can be detected with sheep, human, or rabbit erythrocyte targets. The activity is heat labile and protease sensitive.

Haemophilus ducreyi was isolated from 59 (52%) of 113 men with a clinical diagnosis of chancroid. The following MIC50 (MIC90) values for H. ducreyi were obtained: erythromycin 0.14 (0.5) micrograms/ml, trimethoprim 0.25 (8.0) micrograms/ml, ceftriaxone 0.009 (0.14) micrograms/ml, and ciprofloxacin 0.007 (0.04) micrograms/ml. These data indicate that all isolates appear to be fully susceptible to erythromycin and the other antimicrobial agents tested, although ciprofloxacin was the most effective antibiotic.

Haemophilus influenzae organisms, both type b and non-typable strains, were tested for their adherence to human buccal epithelial cells. Adherence was determined by visual examination of gram-stained specimens of epithelial cells following incubation with H. influenzae. Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated from the urethral discharge of a man with urethritis. The patient responded favorably to treatment with amoxicillin. Although the facts suggest that this case of urethritis may have been caused by H. parainfluenzae, a possible etiologic role of other microorganisms is not ruled out.
