Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to treatment and prevention of cholera, Haiti, 2010.

In response to the recent cholera outbreak, a public health response targeted high-risk communities, including resource-poor communities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A survey covering knowledge and practices indicated that hygiene messages were received and induced behavior change, specifically related to water treatment practices. Self-reported household water treatment increased from 30.3% to 73.9%.

Economic hardship and sexually transmitted diseases in Haiti's rural Artibonite Valley.

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate and risk factors for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Haiti's rural Artibonite Valley. Women attending antenatal services at Hospital Albert Schweitzer from October to December 1996 were tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas, syphilis, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Of the 476 women tested, 121 (25.4%) had trichomonas, 11/475 (2.3%) had gonorrhea, 51/475 (10.7%) had chlamydia, 32/474 (6.8%) were seropositive for syphilis, 20/469 (4.3%) were seropositive for HIV, and 191 (40.1%) had at least one STD. Nearly 30% of the…

Barriers to pregnancy prevention for adolescents in rural Haiti: perceptions of healthcare providers.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about healthcare providers' (HCPs) contraceptive views for adolescents in Haiti, who experience high rates of unintended pregnancy. We sought to describe HCPs' perspectives on barriers and facilitators to contraceptive care delivery in rural Haiti. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey and qualitative interviews with HCPs in two rural communities in Haiti from 08/2021-03/2022. We assessed demographics, clinical practice behaviors and explored contraception perspectives according to Theory of Planned Behavior constructs: attitudes, subjective norms, and per…

Investigating the feasibility of implementing the SafeCare parenting program in birthing centers in Haiti.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a global issue in need of intervention. This study investigated whether SafeCare, an evidence-based behavioral parenting program to prevent child neglect and physical violence, is desired and feasible to implement in Haiti birthing centers. METHODS: A total of four focus groups were conducted with 29 birthing center staff and mothers in two birthing centers in Haiti. Staff participants also completed the World Health Organization Readiness Assessment for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment written survey. RESULTS: Focus group findings suggest that SafeCare …

The dangers of castor oil tea in neonates in rural Haiti: A case report.

During a 2-year period, eight cases of a distinct illness were seen among 1,424 neonates admitted to a newly established neonatal care unit in southern Haiti. The newborns presented with a picture of sepsis with shock, vomiting, hypotonia, lethargy, and abdominal distention. Five cases proved fatal and another case left the hospital against advice in extremis with little chance of survival. In each case, the illness was associated with a history of ingestion of teas that included castor oil, known as lok in Haitian Creole. The presumptive cause of the illness was established by the presence of…

Emotional and Physical Child Abuse in The Context of Natural Disasters: A Focus on Haiti.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the social and living conditions of households in Haiti before and after the 2010 earthquake and to determine the prevalence of emotional and physical abuse of children aged 2 to 14 in households after the earthquake. METHODS: Nationally representative samples of Haitian households from the 2005/2006 and 2012 phases of the Demographic and Health Surveys were used. Descriptive data were summarized with frequencies and measures of central tendency. Chi-squared and independent t tests were used to compare pre-earthquake and post-earthquake data. Basic mapping was used t…

[Update of knowledge on Neglected Diseases in Haiti: Mansonelliasis, Tungiasis, Leprosy, and Anthrax].

Haiti, like most limited-resources countries in the world, faces numerous neglected infectious diseases. They represent a real public health issue with lethal consequences especially in children. We are reviewing here the available literature on four neglected infectious diseases, mansonelliasis, tungiasis, leprosy and anthrax. Filariasis, due to Mansonella ozzardi, has been totally neglected since its discovery in 1920 in Haiti; it persists in coastal homes with a high prevalence in adults when an effective treatment is available. The skin lesions caused by Tunga penetrans have existed since …

Cholera Transmission in Ouest Department of Haiti: Dynamic Modeling and the Future of the Epidemic.

In the current study, a comprehensive, data driven, mathematical model for cholera transmission in Haiti is presented. Along with the inclusion of short cycle human-to-human transmission and long cycle human-to-environment and environment-to-human transmission, this novel dynamic model incorporates both the reported cholera incidence and remote sensing data from the Ouest Department of Haiti between 2010 to 2014. The model has separate compartments for infectious individuals that include different levels of infectivity to reflect the distribution of symptomatic and asymptomatic cases in the po…

Performance and utility of a rapid diagnostic test for cholera: notes from Haiti.

The present study details work done at the National Public Health Laboratory in Haiti (LNSP), comparing the results of a cholera rapid diagnostic test (RDT) with culture-based methods. As of October 21, 2011, 644 specimens were tested by both RDT and culture-based method at the LNSP. The sensitivity and specificity of RDT were 95% and 80%, respectively, with a positive predictive value of 89% and negative predictive value of 91%. In resource-limited settings, the RDT has good utility and should be considered as part of the laboratory testing algorithm.

Critically assessing the Haiti earthquake response and the barriers to quality orthopaedic care.

BACKGROUND: Although numerous authors have described surgical experiences following major disasters, little is known regarding the needs of and barriers to care faced by surgeons during such disasters. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore (1) identified and compared recurrent interview themes essential to the disaster response following the 2010 Haiti earthquake; (2) determined the difference in reported disaster equipment management task difficulty between disaster-trained and untrained volunteers; and (3) approximated the quantity of various procedures performed. METHODS: We conducted 14 inter…
