Pattern of bone erosion and bone proliferation in psoriatic arthritis hands: a high-resolution computed tomography and radiography follow-up study during adalimumab therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the pattern and development of bone erosion and proliferation in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) during treatment with adalimumab, using high-resolution computed tomography (CT) and conventional radiography. METHOD: Forty-one biologic-naïve PsA patients were initiated with adalimumab 40 mg subcutaneously every other week. CT and radiography of the 2nd-5th metacarpophalangeal (MCP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints were conducted at baseline (n = 41) and after 24 weeks (n = 32). Changes in bone erosion and proliferation

Deep learning-based automated bone age estimation for Saudi patients on hand radiograph images: a retrospective study.

PURPOSE: In pediatric medicine, precise estimation of bone age is essential for skeletal maturity evaluation, growth disorder diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention planning. Conventional techniques for determining bone age depend on radiologists' subjective judgments, which may lead to non-negligible differences in the estimated bone age. This study proposes a deep learning-based model utilizing a fully connected convolutional neural network(CNN) to predict bone age from left-hand radiographs. METHODS: The data set used in this study, consisting of 473 patients, was retrospectively retrieve

Therapeutic angiogenesis by bone marrow implantation for critical hand ischemia in patients with peripheral arterial disease: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Implantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs), including endothelial progenitor cells, into ischemic lower limbs has been shown to improve symptoms in patients with peripheral arterial diseases (PAD). This study investigated whether BM-MNC implantation (BMI) is also effective for the ischemic hands of these patients. METHODS: Seven PAD patients with hand ischemia were enrolled: six patients had thromboangiitis obliterans and one had collagen disease. All seven had symptoms involving either resting pain or non-healing ischemic ulcers of the hand. Approximately 600 mL of MN

Custom 3D Implant for Hemiarthroplasty of the Third Metacarpal in a Giant Cell Tumor of bone: Functional Outcomes and Hand Stability.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the hand is a rare benign but locally aggressive bone tumor with high recurrence rates. It is commonly treated by curettage with cementation or bone grafting. However, reconstruction after en bloc resection of metacarpal GCT remains challenging, particularly in young patients. Conventional options such as allografts or standard prostheses are associated with notable complications and functional limitations. Custom- made 3D-printed implants have recently emerged as a potential alternative, although current evidence is limited. We report the case of a 19-year-old woman

HarDNet-based deep learning model for osteoporosis screening and bone mineral density inference from hand radiographs.

PURPOSE: Osteoporosis, affecting over 200 million individuals, often remains unrecognized and untreated, increasing the risk of fractures in older adults. Osteoporosis is typically diagnosed with bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This study aims to develop DeepDXA-Hand, a deep learning model using the efficient CNN-based deep learning architecture, for opportunistic osteoporosis screening from hand radiographs. METHODS: DeepDXA-Hand utilizes a CNN-based, HarDNet, approach to predict BMD non-invasively. A total of 10,351 hand radiographs and DXA pai

Artificial dermis combined with skin grafting for the treatment of hand skin and soft tissue defects and exposure of bone and tendon.

BACKGROUND: The recovery time of hand wounds is long, which can easily result in chronic and refractory wounds, making the wounds unable to be properly repaired. The treatment cycle is long, the cost is high, and it is prone to recurrence and disability. Double layer artificial dermis combined with autologous skin transplantation has been used to repair hypertrophic scars, deep burn wounds, exposed bone and tendon wounds, and post tumor wounds. AIM: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of autologous skin graft transplantation in conjunction with double-layer artificial dermis in treating f

Huge aneurysmal bone cyst secondary to giant cell tumor of the hand phalanx: a case report and related literature.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) secondary to Giant Cell Tumor of bone (GCT) is a rare lesion, of which the incidence is about 0.011 to 0.053 per 100,000 every year. There are only a few previous case reports, and most of them occur in the spine, long bones or flat bones. CASE PRESENTATION: We report one case of a patient who complained of "progressive enlargement of the mass on right-hand fifth finger for 5 years with ulceration for 6 months". After the imaging examination in our hospital, it was diagnosed as a "huge bone tumor on the proximal phalanx of the right-hand fifth finger", t

Aneurysmal bone cysts in the hand treated by free non-vascular transfer of metatarsal or proximal phalanx from the foot.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst in the hand are reported. In one case the entire first metacarpal was resected and grafted using the fourth metatarsal. In the second case diaphysectomy of the middle phalanx of the index digit was performed, and the proximal phalanx of the second toe was used as graft. Satisfactory length and function were maintained, the grafts remained viable and there was no donor site morbidity. Transplant of a metatarsal or toe phalanx to the hand, as a free non-vascularized graft, is a relatively straight forward operation, requires minimal refashioning of the graft, pr

Advantage of hand bone calcium content measurement by local neutron activation analysis for following up hemodialysis patients.

Hand bone calcium content [Ca] has been measured by local neutron analysis in hemodialyzed patients free of signs of osteomalacia before and 6-12 months after treatment with vitamin D metabolites, and it has been compared to some iliac bone histomorphometric parameters. With 1,25-(OH)2D3 alone, [Ca] increases significantly at the 6th month of treatment (p less than 0.001) but not from the 6th to the 12th month. With 1 alpha-(OH)D3 + 25-(OH)D3 the same phenomenon is observed at the 6th and 12th months of treatment. Before treatment, [Ca] was correlated negatively with the osteoid surfaces (OS)

Metabolic activity of sodium, measured by neutron activation, in the hands of patients suffering from bone diseases: concise communication.

Turnover of sodium in the human hand was studied by neutron activation. Patients suffering from various metabolic abnormalities affecting the skeleton, who were undergoing routine neutron activation for the measurement of calcium, were investigated along with a group of healthy volunteers. Neutron activation labels the sodium atoms simultaneously and with equal probability regardless of the turnover time of individual body compartments. The loss of sodium can be described either by a sum of two exponentials or by a single power function. Distinctions between patients and normal subjects were n

Split-hand/foot malformation with long-bone deficiency and BHLHA9 duplication: two cases and expansion of the phenotype to radial agenesis.

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM) with long-bone deficiency (SHFLD, MIM#119100) is a rare condition characterised by SHFM associated with long-bone malformation usually involving the tibia. Previous published data reported several unrelated patients with 17p13.3 duplication and SHFLD. Recently, BHLHA9 has been proposed to be the major candidate gene responsible for this limb malformation. Here we report two new patients affected with ectrodactyly harbouring a 17p13.3 duplication detected by array-CGH. Both duplications contain 3 genes including BHLHA9 and are inherited from an unaffected par

A new locus for split hand/foot malformation with long bone deficiency (SHFLD) at 2q14.2 identified from a chromosome translocation.

Split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) with long bone deficiency (SHFLD) is a distinct entity in the spectrum of ectrodactylous limb malformations characterised by associated tibial a/hypoplasia. Pedigrees with multiple individuals affected by SHFLD often include non-penetrant intermediate relatives, making genetic mapping difficult. Here we report a sporadic patient with SHFLD who carries a de novo chromosomal translocation t(2;18)(q14.2;p11.2). Characterisation of the breakpoints revealed that neither disrupts any known gene; however, the chromosome 2 breakpoint lies between GLI2 and INHBB, two
