Improving healthy eating behaviour among in-school adolescents through collaborative instructional intervention: a theory-driven quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical window for establishing dietary behaviours that shape long-term health outcomes. In Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries, school-based nutrition education has been largely ineffective when delivered through conventional didactic approaches. This study evaluated the effect of a Health Belief Model-guided collaborative learning intervention on diet quality, nutrition knowledge, and perceived dietary behaviour among in-school adolescents in Ogun State, Nigeria. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, pre-test-post-test control group design was used. Three …

Testing a model for parental acceptance of human papillomavirus vaccine in 9- to 18-year-old girls: a theory-guided study.

Gardasil is the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer and other diseases caused by certain types of genital human papillomavirus in females, but little is known about parental acceptance of this vaccine. The purpose of this study was to test a model that predicts intention to vaccinate that includes constructs from the health belief model and the theory of reasoned action.

Behavioral Pathways Associated with Nutritional Self-Management Among Patients Undergoing Maintenance Hemodialysis: A Cross-Sectional IMB Model-Guided Path Analysis.

PURPOSE: To examine factors associated with nutritional self-management behavior and their hypothesized relationships within the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) framework among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center cross-sectional study included a convenience sample of 215 patients undergoing MHD at a tertiary hospital in Shenzhen, China, between January and May 2026. Questionnaires assessed hemodialysis knowledge, health beliefs, social support, self-management, and nutritional self-management behavior. Pearson correlation

Health beliefs of first-degree relatives of individuals with colorectal cancer and participation in health maintenance visits: a population-based survey.

The occurrence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in two or more close relatives by chance is relatively common, and a family history of CRC is reco … s agreed to participate in this study. A logistic regression model was built, and constructs of the Health Belief Model and selected sociodemographic variables (age, gender, level of education) were entered with participation in health maintenance visits as the dependent variable. The analysis revealed 2 Health Belief Model variables (perceived barriers and perceived …

Factors Driving Continuous Intention to Use Telemedicine in the Post-COVID-19 Era: An Integrated HBM and UTAUT Approach.

This study examines the drivers of continued telemedicine use in the post-COVID-19 era by integrating the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) with the Health Belief Model (HBM) and introducing credibility as the linking mechanism between the two frameworks. An online survey of prior telemedicine users in South Korea produced 329 valid responses. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling, we find that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence significantly increase behavioral intention, which in turn promotes continued use. HBM beliefs…

The Effect of Self-Efficacy on Treatment.

Becker's (1974) Health Belief Model has been used successfully to address behavior change in chronic diseases, including smoking and alcohol dependence. This project applies the Health Belief Model to opiate addiction treatment, specifically medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The purpose of this study was to measure the relationship between self-efficacy and treatment outcomes for opiate-dependent clients on MAT. A convenience sample of 50 persons with addiction to opiates was admitted to an outpatient substance abuse treatment program for MAT and followed for a period of 6 months. Pretreatm…

A preliminary study of psychological factors affecting patients' acceptance of CPAP therapy for sleep apnoea syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Many patients abandon continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment after initial acceptance. This may be for physical or psychological reasons. METHODS: We have carried out semi-structured interviews, constructed from the Health Belief Model (HBM) with a convenience sample of patients who had recently abandoned CPAP treatment after at least 6 months of use. We explored their understanding and experiences of their OSA and of the CPAP therapy and their reasons for stopping treatment. RESULTS: Nine patients were interviewed (age 32-70 years; 8 males). Four patients were not …

Correlates of improvement in multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain.

Although multidisciplinary pain programs have been demonstrated to be effective, the processes of improvement have yet to be clarified. Cognitive-behavioral models posit that improvement is due, in part, to changes in patient pain beliefs and coping strategies. To test the relationships between treatment outcome and changes in beliefs and coping strategies, 94 chronic pain patients completed measures of physical and psychological functioning, health care utilization, pain beliefs, and use of pain coping strategies at admission and 3 to 6 months after inpatient pain treatment. Improved function

Fear avoidance and illness beliefs in post-traumatic neck pain.

STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive overview of the relevant literature and the introduction of a new psychological model. OBJECTIVE: The fear-avoidance (FA) model and the potential importance of illness beliefs in post-traumatic neck pain are discussed. The causal beliefs-anxiety model is introduced as an adaptation of the FA model, emphasizing the critical role of illness beliefs. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although the FA model is most thoroughly used to investigate chronic low back pain, it seems also highly relevant as a starting point for other chronic pain conditions like whiplash. Longitudinal effects of religious involvement on religious coping and health behaviors in a national sample of African Americans.

Many studies have examined associations between religious involvement and health, linking various dimensions of religion with a range of physical health outcomes and often hypothesizing influences on health behaviors. However, far fewer studies have examined explanatory mechanisms of the religion-health connection, and most have overwhelmingly relied on cross-sectional analyses. Given the relatively high levels of religious involvement among African Americans and the important role that religious coping styles may play in health, the present study tested a longitudinal model of religious copin

This semi-experimental study was completed with 342 women. The data were collected with forms "Champion's Health Belief Model Scale Breast Cancer-HBMSBC" and "Health Belief Model Scale for Cervical Cancer and the Pap Smear Test-HBMSCCPST." When the women's health beliefs before and after 6 months of the education about the early diag…

English- and Spanish-speaking Latina mothers' beliefs about food, health, and mothering.

Parent beliefs regarding food, health, and child feeding behaviors among Latinos have not been well-documented. A series of eight focus groups were conducted with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking low-income Latina mothers of preschoolers to investigate their beliefs regarding how food and food preparation are related to their children's health and to their own roles as mothers. Systematic content analysis using NUDIST 6 revealed seven themes discussed by the focus groups. Integration of these themes revealed three major areas of consideration: (1) a lack of connection between the domains

Echoes of others: A path analytic examination of an interpersonal-cognitive model of voice-related distress.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive models propose that levels of distress associated with auditory verbal hallucinations ('voices') are influenced by the hearers' beliefs about their voices (perceived malevolence and omnipotence), their negative beliefs about themselves and others and their attachment style. This study aims to test a comprehensive model of the relationship between these variables in order to identify distal and proximal interpersonal and cognitive factors contributing to voice-related distress. This interpersonal-cognitive model of voices proposes that attachment anxiety/avoidance drive ne
