A systematic review of delay discounting among workers: framing effects, resource availability, and health.

A higher rate of delay discounting has been linked to a range of health-risk behaviors and adverse health outcomes. Despite its relevance, delay discounting has limited application in organizational contexts. The aim of this systematic review was to identify empirical studies on the application of delay discounting in organizations or among workers. Sixteen studies were included. Overall, contextual factors (resource availability and negative income shock) and methodological factors (framework, reward magnitude, task type) influenced delay discounting. Consistent effects were observed, includi

The spatial effects and influencing factors of inter-provincial health resource allocation efficiency in China.

BACKGROUND: Chinese government has been adjusting its strategies in response to rapid domestic and international changes to devise effective health policies and enhance public health. However, with the rapid socio-economic development and the COVID-19 outbreak, many researchers have identified issues of inefficiency and uneven distribution in health resource allocation within China. Therefore, how to scientifically allocate and efficiently use Chinese health resources has become an urgent issue. METHODS: The super-efficiency SBM model and global Malmquist model were used to measure and dynami…

[A Report on Health Resource Use of Internal Radiation Therapy with 131I-MIBG (2nd Survey)].

Internal radiation therapy using Iodine-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (131I-MIBG) for neuroblastoma has been discussed whether a special application scheme for off-labeled drugs called "Kouchi-Shinsei" could be applied to neuroblastoma or not by the Evaluation Committee on Unapproved or Off-labeled Drug with High Medical Needs (the Committee); if the Committee determines that Kouchi-Shinsei is applicable, neuroblastoma indication is expected to be regulatory approved within a year. Since a NHI medical technical fee is not yet set for neuroblastoma, the Japanese Society of Nuclear Medicine survey

How Clinical Research Can Contribute to Strengthening Health Systems in Low Resource Countries.

Clinical research on neglected tropical diseases is a challenge in low-resource countries, and the contribution of clinical and operational research to health system strengthening is poorly documented. Developing new, simple, safe, and effective treatments may improve the effectiveness of health systems, and conducting research directly in health structures may have an additional impact. This study describes the process of conducting clinical trials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in compliance with international standards, and the role of the trials in strengthening health system fu

Developing a mental health care plan in a low resource setting: the theory of change approach.

BACKGROUND: Scaling up mental healthcare through integration into primary care remains the main strategy to address the extensive unmet mental health need in low-income countries. For integrated care to achieve its goal, a clear understanding of the organisational processes that can promote and hinder the integration and delivery of mental health care is essential. Theory of Change (ToC), a method employed in the planning, implementation and evaluation of complex community initiatives, is an innovative approach that has the potential to assist in the development of a comprehensive mental healt

Canadian health care institution resource utilization resulting from skeletal-related events.

PURPOSE: We describe the types of major institution health care resources consumed as a result of skeletal-related events (SREs) [ie, pathological fracture, bone surgery, radiation to bone, spinal cord compression]. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter chart review of cancer patients with bone metastases who experienced SREs was conducted. Patients with multiple SREs occurring during the same hospitalization within 21 days of each other were grouped into SRE clusters. RESULTS: We reviewed 156 patient charts from 4 Canadian institutions, accounting for 358 SREs and 259 SRE clusters. Of the to

Village health workers in Bihar, India: an untapped resource in the struggle against kala-azar.

INTRODUCTION: In 2005 a visceral leishmaniasis (VL) elimination initiative was launched on the Indian subcontinent; important components of early case finding and treatment are entrusted to the primary health care system (PHC). In an earlier study in Bihar, India, we discovered some major shortcomings in implementation, in particular related to monitoring of treatment and treatment outcomes. These shortcomings could be addressed through involvement of village health workers. In the current study we assessed knowledge, attitude and practice of these village health workers in relation to VL. Mai

Increased olanzapine discontinuation and health care resource utilization following a Medicaid policy change.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the short-term impact of Florida Medicaid's policy change on olanzapine discontinuation and health care resource utilization among olanzapine-treated patients with schizophrenia or bipolar diagnoses. The announced policy change, effective on July 11, 2005, but rescinded on September 9, 2005, reclassified olanzapine as nonpreferred and gave physicians 60 days to change antipsychotics for current users. METHOD: Prescription patterns, health care resource utilization, and Medicaid payments were compared between patients using olanzapine on July 11, 2005, and matched prior-ye

The role of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and motor neurone disease community in health-care resourcing.

The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease (ALS/MND) Associations operate in the same financially constrained environment as everyone else. Increasing competition for limited health-care resources means that we are having to become better at competing for them on behalf of people affected by ALS/MND. This paper highlights the problems associated with making a case for ALS/MND, explores a range of method available to us, and illustrates using examples the recent activities undertaken by the UK MND Association.

Disparities in Echinococcosis Control in Xizang, China: An Assessment Based on the Health Resource Density Index.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis remains a major public health concern in Xizang, China, characterized by high endemicity in remote and underserved areas. Despite long-term implementation of the national control program, the effectiveness of interventions may be constrained by insufficient and unevenly distributed health human resources (HHR). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the distribution of HHR in Xizang and its association with echinococcosis prevalence at the township level using the health resource density index (HRDI). METHODS: Township-level data on echinococcosis prevalence were collected from t

Vector-borne disease surveillance and control resource needs in Colorado public health organizations.

Since 2002, Colorado has experienced a high vector-borne disease (VBD) burden from diseases like West Nile fever, plague, and tularemia. Recent evidence underscores a lack of vector-borne surveillance and control program capacity across public health organizations, prompting our evaluation of funding and resource needs for such programs in Colorado. We assessed the needs, organizational capacity, and mitigation strategies of Colorado public health organizations' VBD programs using a convergent mixed methods study design. Between January and May 2024, we surveyed and interviewed key public heal

Health care costs and resource utilization among patients with myasthenia gravis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare neuromuscular disorder with an estimated prevalence of 37 per 100,000 individuals in the United States. Despite patients with MG using a wide range of health care services, there is a lack of information regarding health care costs and health care resource utilization (HCRU). OBJECTIVE: To gain insight into the health care cost and HCRU associated with an MG diagnosis from the US payer perspective. METHODS: Patients with MG, defined by at least 2 claims for MG diagnoses, were identified from a commercial and Medicare claims database between 2016 a

Real-world disease burden and health care resource utilization for patients with Barth syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Barth syndrome (BTHS) is an ultra-rare, X-linked genetic disorder for which there is limited economic data. Because compiling such data that target rare indications is difficult, we assessed real-world data to increase understanding of the cost of BTHS based on disease burden and health care resource utilization (HCRU). METHODS: A search of the published medical literature identified individual case studies and registry data used to assess the burden of disease and potential costs associated with BTHS, including the potential ability of developing treatments to positively impact t
