Radiotherapy-induced hearing impairment significantly affects patients' quality of life, yet its genetic basis remains poorly understood. This study seeks to identify genetic variants associated with radiotherapy-induced tinnitus and hearing loss and explore their functional implications. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with radiotherapy-induced tinnitus and hearing loss. Protein-protein interaction networks and functional enrichment analyses were performed to explore underlying biological pathways. A phenome-wi

Hearing loss is a common manifestation of the long-term complications in patients with shunt treated hydrocephalus along with motor development disturbance, cognitive and visual impairment, epilepsy and endocrine disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the alterations of hearing in patients with shunt treated hydrocephalus of non-tumor etiology and at least one year after implantation of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt, as well as their impact on the quality of life of patients. The study included 70 patients (age range 1.25 years - 21.25 years) with shunted non-tumor hydrocepha

A group of about 100 consecutive patients admitted to an otorhinolaryngological outpatient department for treatment of cranial nerve affections underwent detailed neurological, audiological and laboratory examinations. Of 34 patients with hearing loss, objective signs of viral infection were found in 12. The hearing loss was sensorineural of the cochlear type, in 7 cases of the high-frequency type, in 5 cases of the low-frequency (Menière) type. Within one year after the onset of the disease the hearing loss had disappeared in all but 2 cases. Reversible dysfunction of two or more cranial nerv

PURPOSE: Facial nerve microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS) provides relief to most patients. Due to the proximity of the cochlear and facial nerves, hearing loss is a potential MVD complication, however, there is a wide range in the reported incidence of hearing loss (HL) in the literature. In order to better understand the HL incidence in our MVD population, we utilized the combination of speech discrimination scores (SDS) and air and bone pure tone threshold averages (PTA) to identify patients with no hearing change, sensorineural hearing loss, or conductive hearing l

Hearing loss is an important risk factor for dementia. However, the mechanisms that relate these disorders are still unknown. As a proxy of this relationship, we studied the structural brain changes associated with functional impairment in activities of daily living in subjects with age related hearing loss, or presbycusis. One hundred eleven independent, non-demented subjects older than 65 years recruited in the ANDES cohort were evaluated using a combined approach including (i) audiological tests: hearing thresholds and cochlear function measured by pure tone averages and the distortion prod

Congenital hearing loss is one of the most common birth defects worldwide, with around 1 in 500 people experiencing some form of severe hearing loss. While over 400 different syndromes involving hearing loss have been described, it is important to be familiar with a wide range of syndromes involving hearing loss so an early diagnosis can be made and early intervention can be pursued to maximize functional hearing and speech-language development in the setting of verbal communication. This review aims to describe the presentation and genetics for some of the most frequently occurring syndromes

Tinnitus has been considered an auditory phantom percept. Recently a theoretical multiphase compensation mechanism at a cortical level has been hypothesized linking auditory deafferentation to tinnitus. This Bayesian brain model predicts that two very different kinds of tinnitus should exist, depending on the amount of hearing loss: an auditory cortex related form of tinnitus not associated with hearing loss, and a (para)hippocampal form associated with hearing loss, in which the auditory cortex might be of little relevance. In order to verify this model, resting state source analyzed EEG reco

Hearing loss is a very common disorder. It is discussed, using the aid of a topical classification. An introductory description of new basic knowledge about the peripheral hearing organ is given first. Such knowledge has had an important influence on the understanding and the evaluation of hearing loss. The diagnosis of conductive hearing loss is relatively easy to make. It represents mainly a quantitative disorder without much loss of qualitative information, and it can often be improved surgically. Conversely, sensorineural hearing loss is always associated with a loss in the quality of the

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of consensus regarding the definition, consequences, and management of mild bilateral hearing loss in children. The objective of this study is to analyze the benefit of hearing aids in children with mild bilateral hearing loss by evaluating their functional hearing.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 57 children with mild bilateral hearing loss between 20 dB HL and 40 dB HL. Pure tone and speech audiometry thresholds were assessed with and without hearing aids. Two groups were subsequently formed: group E with an effective use of hearing aids (>10 h/day), a

There is an increasing global recognition of the negative impact of hearing loss, and its association to many chronic health conditions. The deficits and disabilities associated with profound unilateral hearing loss, however, continue to be under-recognized and lack public awareness. Profound unilateral hearing loss significantly impairs spatial hearing abilities, which is reliant on the complex interaction of monaural and binaural hearing cues. Unilaterally deafened listeners lose access to critical binaural hearing cues. Consequently, this leads to a reduced ability to understand speech in c

The purpose of this study was to determine whether localization errors were greater in cases of right ear unilateral simulated conductive loss, as compared to left ear simulated conductive loss of the same degree and configuration. Thirty adults were asked to localize a 3-kHz warbled pure tone with their left and right ears alternately occluded with an earplug. Significantly greater localization difficulty was found when the right ear was occluded. The average error was 58 degrees with the left ear plugged and 64 degrees when the right ear was occluded, which approximates the 65-degree average

OBJECTIVE: The optimal treatment and timing for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) remain debated. This study aimed to determine if the hearing improvement and recovery time were better in the NAD+ group as compared to the control group.
METHODS: There was a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial conducted between June 2022 and June 2024. SSNHL patients were randomly divided into two groups: the NAD+ group (NAD+ plus standard treatment, n = 18) and the control group (standard treatment, n = 20). The primary outcomes were PTA improvement, recovery rate per Siegel's criteria

Contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex adaptation (decay) were examined using 500-, 1000-, and 2000-Hz tonal activators for stimulation periods of 30 seconds in 30 normal subjects. For these normal subjects, ipsilateral adaptation always exceeded contralateral adaptation, although differences between the two conditions were not significant. In addition, contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex adaptation of four subjects with varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss were compared to the normative data. Results for these impaired ears indicated that a longer period of activatio

Hearing loss has become increasingly prevalent and causes considerable disability, thus gravely burdening the global economy. Irreversible loss of hair cells is a main cause of sensorineural hearing loss, and currently, the only relatively effective clinical treatments are limited to digital hearing equipment like cochlear implants and hearing aids, but these are of limited benefit in patients. It is therefore urgent to understand the mechanisms of damage repair in order to develop new neuroprotective strategies. At present, how to promote the regeneration of functional hair cells is a key sci

OBJECTIVES: As children with sensorineural hearing loss have an increased risk for vestibular impairment, the Vestibular Infant Screening-Flanders project implemented a vestibular screening by means of cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) at the age of 6 months for each child with hearing loss in Flanders (Belgium). Given that vestibular deficits can affect the child's development, this vestibular screening should allow early detection and intervention. However, less is currently known about which screening tool would be the most ideal and how vestibular impairment can evolve

The case of a 59-year-old male with a sudden-onset sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and an incidental finding of an intracanalicular vestibular schwannoma in the contralateral, normally hearing ear is reported. The patient was successfully fitted with a hearing aid in the ear with the sudden hearing loss, which notably had very poor word recognition. The questionable value of word-recognition scores in determining hearing aid candidacy is discussed. The importance of considering nonaudiologic factors in determining hearing aid candidacy is also highlighted.

We performed a long-term, retrospective, non-controlled study on the functional results of mastoidectomy (both radical and modified radical) and defined the relevant statistical factors that may influence the hearing outcome. In a cohort of 200 patients, we performed both radical and modified radical mastoidectomy (MRM) and followed them clinically for a period of 8.12 years. The functional results were defined by the analytical function of the severity and the period of evolution of the disease. These parameters were defined by assessing the pre-operative absolute hearing threshold (AHT), bon

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) refers to a pattern of anomalies that include craniofacial, CNS, growth, and various sensory anomalies. We have observed that FAS is associated with four kinds of hearing disorders: (1) developmentally delayed auditory function, (2) sensorineural hearing loss, (3) intermittent conductive hearing loss owing to recurrent serous otitis media, and (4) central hearing loss. As is the case with other syndromes associated with craniofacial anomalies and hearing impairments, speech and language pathologies also are common in FAS patients. Although auditory and vestibular s
