Assessment of hearing in infants with moderate to profound impairment: the Melbourne experience with auditory steady-state evoked potential testing.

Auditory steady-state evoked potential (ASSEP) testing has been used in the assessment of hearing in infants at the University of Melbourne School of Audiology Clinic during the past 10 years. This study examines the evoked potential and behavioral hearing test findings for 200 children in whom permanent, moderate to profound hearing loss was diagnosed with the ASSEP procedure. The ASSEP audiograms were obtained with amplitude and frequency modulated tones at octave frequencies (500 to 4,000 Hz). In 184 infants, the hearing loss appeared to be of sensorineural origin. For these children, there

Pathophysiology of hearing impairment in acoustic neuroma with profound deafness: analysis by evoked otoacoustic emission and promontory stimulation test.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions (e-OAEs) were examined and promontory stimulus test (PST) done prior to tumor removal in 15 cases of surgically proven unilateral acoustic neuroma (AN) with more than 80 dB in pure-tone hearing level. The e-OAEs were elicited by tone-bursts at 1 kHz and 2 kHz, and an interaural difference in pseudothreshold of more than 10 dB was defined as a significant impairment of the cochlear function. In PST, electrical stimulation was applied by a burst mode at 6 stimulus frequencies between 50 Hz and 1600 Hz. The number of stimulus frequencies with a positive response was d

Hearing, β-Amyloid Deposition and Cognitive Test Performance in Black and White Older Adults: The ARIC-PET Study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia; whether the association is causal or due to a shared pathology is unknown. We estimated the association of brain β-amyloid with hearing, hypothesizing no association. As a positive control, we quantified the association of hearing loss with neurocognitive test performance. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities-Positron Emission Tomography study data. Amyloid was measured using global cortical and temporal lobe standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) calculated from florbetapir-positron emission tomogra

Automatic audiometry using auditory steady-state response and sequential test strategy applied to volunteers with normal hearing.

PURPOSE: In the present study, a new procedure to perform automatic audiometry using multifrequency Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) is proposed. METHODS: The automatic audiometry procedure consists of detecting the presence of multifrequency ASSR in real-time using the sequential test strategy and by adjusting the stimulus intensity independently. The ASSR audiometric thresholds of 18 adult volunteers with normal hearing were determined by automatically (four simultaneous frequencies per ear) at modulation frequencies in the 80 Hz range. The exam time and the difference between ASSR thr

Diagnosis of congenital CMV infection via DBS samples testing and neonatal hearing screening: an observational study in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common cause of non-genetic hearing loss in childhood. A newborn hearing screening program (NHSP) is currently running in Italy, but no universal cCMV nor statewide hearing-targeted CMV screening programs have been implemented yet. This observational monocentric study was aimed at estimating the rate of cCMV infections identified by CMV-DNA analysis on Dried Blood Spots (DBS) samples in deaf children identified via NHSP in Northern Italy in the period spanning from 2014 to 2018. METHODS: Children with a confirmed diagnosis of deafness

[Evaluation of dynamic changes in hearing impairment in subjects exposed to noise while testing for transient evoked otoacoustic emission].

A group of 74 miners, aged 19-35 years, exposed to industrial noise at average level of 82-88 dBA for 1.5 to 15 years were examined by means of otoacoustic emission (TEOAE). The group was divided into three subgroups, depending on the duration of noise exposure. The results obtained in miners were compared to the results of the control group nonexposed to noise at the workplace. Otoacoustic emission was weaker in subjects exposed to noise. Significant differences in responses were found in subgroups II and III as compared to controls. The results were compared to the data reported by other aut

[350m heliox saturated diving test--dynamic observation on hearing threshold, brainstem evoked response and acoustic impedance].

Four divers were investigated simulating a diving of 350m with saturated heliox under compression, performed in Jan 1989 at Navy Medical Institute. Changes in hearing threshold, brainstem evoked response and acoustic impedance were observed. The 4 divers experienced no tinnitus, hard of hearing and earache during compression and decompression. Objective examination showed loss of lower frequency range of hearing, that was due to the masking effect of the noise in the chamber. Changes in the wave--form and latency of brainstem evoked response were due to a change in sound wave transmission effe

Inner Ear Test Battery Aligned with Hydrops Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Differentiate Acute-Onset Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: This study differentiates cases of acute-onset sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) that did not meet the diagnostic criteria for either sudden SNHL or Meniere's disease, leading to a diagnostic challenge. METHODS: All 46 patients with acute-onset SNHL underwent an inner ear test battery followed by hydrops magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Twenty-four patients (28 ears) who tested positive for endolymphatic hydrops (EH) on hydrops MRI were referred to the EH group. Another 22 patients (22 ears) who tested negative for EH were classified as the non-EH group. RESULTS: Significant d

Detection of hearing loss by formal audiological testing after acute infectious meningitis: a global systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute community-acquired bacterial meningitis remains a significant global health concern with significant mortality and morbidity, including neurological sequelae such as sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Early detection of meningitis-associated SNHL mitigates permanent deafness and poor outcomes, including cognitive decline, social isolation, and mental health disorders. This systematic review evaluates the optimal time point(s) to perform formal audiological diagnostic testing and follow-up in adult and pediatric meningitis patients to effectively detect hearing loss (HL) outco

Pure-tone audiometry without bone-conduction thresholds: using the digits-in-noise test to detect conductive hearing loss.

Objective: COVID-19 has been prohibitive to traditional audiological services. No- or low-touch audiological assessment outside a sound-booth precludes test batteries including bone conduction audiometry. This study investigated whether conductive hearing loss (CHL) can be differentiated from sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) using pure-tone air conduction audiometry and a digits-in-noise (DIN) test.Design: A retrospective sample was analysed using binomial logistic regressions, which determined the effects of pure tone thresholds or averages, speech recognition threshold (SRT), and age on the

Genetic testing for hearing loss in the United States should include deletion/duplication analysis for the deafness/infertility locus at 15q15.3.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the most common birth defect and the most prevalent sensorineural disorder in developed countries. More than 50% of prelingual deafness is genetic, most often autosomal recessive and nonsyndromic, of which 50% can be attributed to the disorder DFNB1, caused by mutations in GJB2 and GJB6. Sensorineural hearing loss and male infertility (Deafness-Infertility Syndrome; DIS) is a contiguous gene deletion syndrome resulting from homozygous deletion of the CATSPER2 and STRC genes on chromosome 15q15.3. Females with DIS have only hearing loss and are fertile. Until recentl

["Audio 4": a simple and quick speech audiometry test for moderate hearing loss screening in four-year-old children].

UNLABELLED: The need for repeated auditory screening throughout early childhood faces the obstacle of the lack of objective validated material. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this two-year prospective study was to create and validate frequency-based word/picture lists appropriate for four-year-olds. Words were chosen not on the basis of the acoustic frequency of phoneme production, but on frequencies corresponding to their optimal recognition. Responses thus were to predict pure-tone threshold curves. MATERIAL AND METHODS: First of all, the linguistics laboratory created lists. Next, we proceeded t
