Examinations of 70 patients with keeled deformation of the chest (KDC) have revealed signs of connective tissue dysplasia in all the examinees, as well as heart rhythm and conduction disorders. Echography has shown ventricular and atrial septal defects, mitral valve prolapse, dilatation of the aortic root, tricuspidal valve prolapse, abnormally located chorda. The development of KDC in the presence of external connective tissue stigmata, involvement of the cardiovascular system, changed dermatoglyphic pattern of the palms and fingers (as evidenced by dermatoglyphic analysis), as well as findin

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the morphological reconstruction as assessed by 3D transoesophageal echocardiography after triangular resection and neochordal replacement in the treatment of posterior leaflet prolapse.
METHODS: We retrospectively selected 46 patients with isolated posterior leaflet prolapse who were undergoing mitral valve repair using triangular resection (n = 20) and neochordal replacement (n = 26) techniques. Sixty patients without valvular heart disease were also included as the control group. Thorough 3D transoesophageal echocardiography inspections were performed for the entire

Cardiac hemangiomas are rare tumors, the presence of these neoplasms in heart valves is an exceptional finding, mainly because of their histological features. Normally, transesophageal echocardiography is used to establish a diagnosis of cardiac tumor, though careful interpretation is needed to avoid diagnostic errors. Herein is described an unusual presentation of a primary hemangioma of the mitral valve which was diagnosed as a prolapsing left atrial myxoma. The patient underwent successful surgical excision of the neoplasm, followed by mitral valve repair.

A hitherto unrecognized case of van der Hoeve's syndrome complicated by Ebstein's anomaly, and prolapse of the mitral and aortic valves was reported. A 46-year-old woman presented with blue sclera, osteogenesis imperfecta and a hearing loss, which are typical symptoms of this syndrome. The electrocardiogram showed a type B WPW syndrome. The phonocardiogram showed a loud and widely split first heart sound, an accentuated protodiastolic extrasound, a decrescendo regurgitant systolic murmur, and a presystolic murmur. The x descent of the jugular phlebogram was obliterated by a markedly increased

Accompanying the aging of the population has been a change in the presentation and the manifestations of valvular heart disease. Calcific aortic stenosis is now the most frequent reason for valvular heart surgery and differs greatly from the stenosis produced by rheumatic fever or a congenital bicuspid valve. Mitral insufficiency is found with increasing frequency and is often due to a calcified mitral valve annulus. Mitral valve prolapse, once thought to be a disease found in younger patients, is being diagnosed more and more in the elderly and is a significant cause of mitral regurgitation.

The pathologic substrate for sudden death in the middle-aged or elderly adult is usually ischemic heart disease. In contrast, few data are available regarding the pathology of sudden death in teenagers. This report describes three teenagers without clinically suspected heart disease dying suddenly. Patient 1 (age 15, male) was known to have right ventricular premature ventricular beats. Postmortem examination revealed marked premature aging, sclerosis of the cardiac skeleton extending to the right side of the summit with fibrosis of the left and right bundle branches. Patient 2 (age 17, male)

The case is reported of mitral valve repair with cusp-level chordal shortening for non-rheumatic mitral anterior leaflet prolapse. The simple and easily reproducible cusp-level shortening procedure consists of plication of the redundant chorda underneath the leaflet. Provided the chorda is thick enough, this procedure is more likely to be applied to regional mitral anterior prolapse due to elongation of the chorda, even in patients with non-rheumatic heart disease. The present patient underwent perioperative adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) therapy. ASV might help to prevent atrial fibrillatio

Sixty-two patients diagnosed as having mitral valve prolapse, 60 to 81 years old, presented with disabling chest pain (20), symptoms of arrhythmias including palpitations and syncope (16), or mitral regurgitation (MR) with symptoms of congestive heart failure (26). The diagnosis of MVP was made on the basis of a combination of classic auscultatory, echocardiographic and angiographic findings. Thirteen of the 20 patients with chest pain had normal coronary angiograms and 7 had significant coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients with CAD could not be differentiated by clinical presentation alone

The case records of 58 German Shepherds (GS group) affected by mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and/or mitral valve regurgitation (MR), and 49 dogs weighing < 15 kg (D group), affected by chronic valvular disease (CVD) were reviewed. The dogs of the GS group were presented more often without a detectable heart murmur (p < 0.01), and less frequently with a high intensity heart murmur (p < 0.01). Atrial fibrillation (AF) was more common in the GS group (p < 0.001). MVP associated with mitral valve thickening was more common in the D group (p < 0.001). Fractional shortening (FS) was lower (p < 0.0001)

Cardiac diseases and failure make up one of largest contributions to global mortality and significantly detriment the quality of life for millions of others. Disorders in the valves of the left ventricle are a prominent example of heart disease, with prolapse, regurgitation, and stenoses-the three main valve disorders. It is widely known that mitral valve prolapse increases the susceptibility to cardiac arrhythmia. Here, we investigate stenoses and regurgitation of the mitral and aortic valves in the left ventricle using a synergistic low-order numerical model. The model synergy derives from t

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common primary valvular abnormality, associated with various degrees of incompetent function and sequelae, including heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Recent improvements in echocardiographic techniques and new insights into mitral valve anatomy and physiology have rendered the diagnosis of this condition more accurate and reliable. Here we review the genetic etiology, clinical significance, diagnosis, and treatment options for MVP patients.

We report here a case of a premature baby with tetralogy of Fallot and bicuspid aortic valve. After the successful completion of the Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt, severe aortic valve regurgitation (AR) appeared, although it was trivial preoperatively. Severe postoperative heart failure was induced by progression of the AR. Postoperative echocardiography revealed that the progression of the AR was provoked by appearance of prolapse of the cusp as the result of rapid increase of blood flow through the aortic valve after the BT shunt. We propose that, in planning the BT shunt for patients with tetr

Introduction: The revised Ghent nosology presents the classical features of Marfan syndrome. However, behind its familiar face, Marfan syndrome hides less well-known features.Areas covered: The German Marfan Organization listed unusual symptoms and clinical experts reviewed the literature on clinical features of Marfan syndrome not listed in the Ghent nosology. Thereby we identified the following features: (1) bicuspid aortic valve, mitral valve prolapse, pulmonary valve prolapse, tricuspid valve prolapse, (2) heart failure and cardiomyopathy, (3) supraventricular arrhythmia, ventricular arrhy

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a commonly diagnosed condition with varied clinical presentations but local data is lacking. In our study, we reviewed 98 patients (54 males, 44 females) with echocardiographic mitral valve prolapse diagnosed between 1991 and 1993 to study the clinical profile and echocardiographic features of patients with this condition in our local population. The mean and median age at presentation/detection were 42 years and 38 years respectively. The majority of the patients were asymptomatic (59%); the rest presented with palpitations (21%), congestive heart failure (4%) a

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is an important contributor to cardiovascular disease in children and adults in Yemen. This is the first report to determine the prevalence of RHD among school-children in the city of Aden.
METHODS: A cross-sectional case-finding survey of RHD was conducted in 6000 school-children aged 5-16 years. Echocardiography was undertaken in those with clinical signs of organic heart disease.
RESULTS: The prevalence of RHD was 36·5/1000 school-children, which is one of the highest reported among school echocardiography surveys in the world. RHD was more common

Congenital heart disease occurs in approximately 1% of all live births and includes structural abnormalities of the heart valves. However, this statistic underestimates congenital valve lesions, such as bicuspic aortic valve (BAV) and mitral valve prolapse (MVP), that typically become apparent later in life as progressive valve dysfunction and disease. At present, the standard treatment for valve disease is replacement, and approximately 95,000 surgical procedures are performed each year in the United States. The most common forms of congenital valve disease include abnormal valve cusp morphog

Hemolytic anemia is a well-recognized complication of mechanical heart valve prosthesis but, as yet, has not been reported after mitral valve repair with chordal replacement. We report a case of severe hemolytic anemia after mitral valve repair with chordal replacement and Carpentier-Edwards annuloplasty ring insertion. Progressive prolapse of the anterior leaflet due to the artificial chordae being too long caused recurrent regurgitation which was responsible for the hemolysis. The patient also had idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, but successful second mitral valve repair was performed af

OBJECTIVE: We report a new expanded polytetrafluoroethylene multichordal mitral apparatus (MitraPatch) to simplify mitral repairs involving multiple cusps and sought to describe the surgical technique and demonstrate the efficacy of the device.
METHODS: MitraPatch was laser cut from a single sheet of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene and mounted on a custom-designed handle. Surgical technique to deploy the apparatus on the native mitral valve was developed in ex vivo porcine hearts. Hemodynamic efficacy of repairing mitral prolapse and regurgitation was assessed in ex vivo hearts and in five 3
