Hemoglobin SC (HbSC) disease is a hemoglobinopathy that may produce sickling under conditions of hypoxemia, dehydration, and acidosis. We present a case of HbSC disease and tricuspid atresia, type IB. We describe management by cardiopulmonary bypass CPB using exchange transfusion at initiation of bypass and fractionation of collected blood, allowing platelet and plasma apheresis, as an option for patients unable to undergo this procedure off pump.

OBJECTIVE: Hemoglobin (Hb) is a prognostic factor in cervical cancer, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we hypothesized that low Hb level, either before or during radiotherapy (RT), is a surrogate for a more infiltrative and therefore aggressive disease, with uterine corpus invasion and nodal metastases.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Prospectively collected data of patients with locally advanced cervical cancer treated with curative intent using chemoradiation at a tertiary academic center was reviewed. All eligible patients had a positron emission tomographic scan and pel

BACKGROUND: Women using copper intrauterine devices (IUDs) frequently experience bleeding abnormalities. This review was conducted to evaluate the evidence regarding whether hemoglobin levels should be measured prior to copper IUD insertion.
STUDY DESIGN: The PubMed database was searched from database inception through March 2012 for all peer-reviewed articles in any language concerning hemoglobin changes among women with anemia who have copper IUDs inserted. Articles were included if they reported changes in hemoglobin among anemic women over a specified period of time following copper IUD i…

BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin sickle cell disease is one of the most frequent hemoglobinopathies. Surprisingly, few studies have been dedicated to this disease, currently considered to be a mild variant of homozygous sickle cell disease. The aim of this study was to update our knowledge about hemoglobin sickle cell disease.
DESIGN AND METHODS: The study involved a single center series of 179 patients. Clinical and biological data were collected with special attention to the assessment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and nephropathy.
RESULTS: Hemoglobin sickle cell diagnosis was delayed and perfo

We report the molecular basis and hematological phenotype associated with a hitherto undescribed interaction of hemoglobin (Hb) Lepore-Hollandia, Hb E and a deletion of three α-globin genes found in a 3-year-old Thai girl. She had mild anemia with Hb 10.9 g/dl and Hct 35.9% and had never received blood transfusion. Hb analysis revealed Hb E (22.1%) with a normal level of Hb A(2) (1.9%), unusually elevated Hb F (65.9%), Hb Lepore (4.0%), and 5.4% Hb Bart's. Globin gene analyses demonstrated that she carried the Hb Lepore-Hollandia mutation in trans to the Hb E and a compound heterozygosity for

Hemoglobin Constant Spring (Hb CS) is an unstable hemoglobin (Hb) variant that results from a nucleotide substitution at the termination codon of the alpha2-globin gene. The compound heterozygosity of alpha-thalassemia and Hb CS (--/alphaCSalpha) results in a Hb H/CS disease which is clinically more severe than deletional Hb H disease. Homozygosity of Hb CS (alphaCSalpha/alphaCSalpha) is generally characterized with mild hemolytic anemia, jaundice, and splenomegaly. The authors report 1 case with Hb CS homozygosity who presented with fetal anemia and hydrops. Intrauterine transfusions were giv

A method is described for estimating plasma and urinary hemoglobin concentrations as low as 3 mg/L. The assay measures at 528 nm the rate of peroxidation of chlorpromazine by hemoglobin and is not affected by ascorbate and bilirubin concentrations up to 500 mumol/L. Results by this method (mean +/- SD: 54.4 +/- 41.6 mg/L; n = 19) correlated well with those by a scanning spectrophotometric method (52.5 +/- 41.6 mg/L; r = 0.96) and a Coulter Instrument method (r = 0.99; Coulter method: 125 +/- 15 g/L; rate method: 122 +/- 15 g/L; n = 10, r = 0.99). The correlation for assays of 20 plasma samples…

A 9-year-old black patient with the simultaneous occurrence of cystic fibrosis and hemoglobin S-D disease is reported. She was placed on chronic transfusion therapy from 1 year of age because of her rapidly worsening pulmonary condition. Her pulmonary function is now stable. The role of this therapy in the overall management of this unusual syndrome is discussed.

The optimal conditions for the semisynthesis of alpha-globin through Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease condensation of a synthetic fragment (alpha 1-30) with the complementary apo fragment (alpha 31-141) in the presence of structure-inducing organic cosolvents and the reconstitution of the functional tetramer from semisynthetic alpha-globin have been investigated. The protease-catalyzed ligation of the complementary apo fragments alpha 1-30 and alpha 31-141 proceeds with very high selectivity at pH 6.0 and 4 degrees C in the presence of 1-propanol as the organic cosolvent. A 30% 1-propanol sol

The finding of elevated HbA1 levels in two galactosemic infants of 24.1% and 23.8% (normal 6.3-8.2%) led to an assessment of the effects of dietary management in galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase deficiency and galactokinase deficiency. Exclusion of dietary galactose and lactose in the two propositi resulted in a reduction of HbA1 levels to normal in one and towards normal in the other. HbA1 was measured in twelve treated subjects with transferase deficiency, seven carriers, and one child te uridyl transferase deficiency and galactokinase deficiency. BACKGROUND: Studies have highlighted potential non-contraceptive benefits from women’s use of hormonal, reversible contraceptive methods. Given the physiological pathways through which hormonal contraception may interact with menstruation, a growing body of work has documented the extent to which hormonal method use might be associated with increased hemoglobin levels and reductions in the risk of anemia in women. While these findings are promising, the scope for causal inference from these studies is restricted by their cross-sectional design, which limits the extent to which bias from indivi

BACKGROUND: Cell-free hemoglobin (CFH) and free heme are potent mediators of endotheliopathy and organ injury in sepsis, but their roles in other hemolytic pathologies are not well-defined. A prime example is trauma where early hemolysis may initiate damage and predict outcome. Here, we investigated the presence of plasma CFH, heme, and their major scavengers after traumatic injury.
METHODS: Adult patients who presented as highest-level activations were prospectively enrolled at a level 1 trauma center between 2021 and 2023. Venous blood was collected upon arrival (pretransfusion) and 6, 12,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Iron-fortified foods reduce the incidence of iron deficiency anemia. However, the nutritional efficacy of heme iron fortificants is unclear.
METHODS: In this study, we determined the hemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) of a porcine-derived heme iron powder (HIP), treating anemic rats (hemoglobin (Hb) 3-6 g/dL) with 14-day repletion diets fortified with four different concentrations (12, 24, 36, or 48 mg iron/kg diets) of HIP or a control diet ("no added iron"); n = 9-12/group.
RESULTS: Our results demonstrate an inverse association between HRE and increasing dieta

BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin (Hgb) levels are frequently checked through venipuncture [invasive hemoglobin (iHgb)] in pediatric orthopaedic patients after high blood loss procedures. This needlestick may causes further anxiety and fear in hospitalized children. Noninvasive hemoglobin (nHgb) monitoring has been effectively utilized in the adult intensive care and postoperative total joint arthroplasty setting. nHgb monitoring has not yet been validated in children for routine postoperative Hgb assessment in pediatric orthopaedics.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 46 pediatric orthopaedic patients
