[Comparative evaluation of memory-regulating neuropeptides before and after electric shock in albino rats].

Antiamnestic properties of memory neuropeptide--modulators and their effect on learning were studied as well as consolidation of oligopeptide ACTH4-7, vasopressin, oxytocin, leu enkephalin and the melanocyte inhibiting factor. Effect of these neuropeptides on the rat higher nervous activity is bath strong and specific: ACTH4-7 and leu enkephalin speed up the primary learning whereas vasopressin and oxytocin improve long--term memory. Peptides are able to reverse retrograde as well as anterograde amnesia and to preserve previously formed habits from disturbance by electric shock. Vasopressin an…

Autonomic nerve activity and the short-term variability of the Tpeak-Tend interval in dogs with pacing-induced heart failure.

BACKGROUND: In congestive heart failure (CHF), autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity is known to modulate arrhythmic risk through its effects on myocardial repolarization. An increased interval between the peak and the end of the T wave (T(peak)-T(end)) has been reported to increase the incidence of sudden cardiac death. However, the ANS influence on the T(peak)-T(end) interval remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We directly measured ANS nerve activity in ambulatory dogs with pacing-induced CHF to test the hypothesis that ANS activity modulates the T(peak)-T(end) variability index (T(peak)-T(end)VI

Alterations of enteric nerve plexus in experimental gastroschisis: is there a delay in the maturation?

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: After surgical correction of gastroschisis, intestinal transitory hypoperistalsis usually occurs. Long-term parenteral nutrition often is necessary leading to a higher morbidity associated with this malformation. The etiology of this transitory intestinal hypomotility is unknown. It may be caused by a reversible inflammatory process in the intestinal wall or other causes, including an alteration of the maturation of intestinal neural plexus, because the disturbance disappears spontaneously after a variable period. The aim of this work was to study the neuronal cells of the

Hostility is related to blunted beta-adrenergic receptor responsiveness among middle-aged women.

OBJECTIVE: Based on previous findings in men, the hypothesis that hostility would be associated with blunted responsiveness of cardiovascular beta-adrenergic receptors was tested in a study sample of middle-aged women. The roles of the sympathetic nervous system and of social support in this putative relationship were also evaluated. METHODS: Subjects were 80 healthy women (n = 23 African American; n = 57 white), aged 47 to 55 years. Hostility was assessed using the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and social support was assessed with the Brief Social Support Questionnaire. Intravenous isoproteren

Vagus nerve stimulation activates nucleus of solitary tract neurons via supramedullary pathways.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) treats patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, depression and heart failure, but the mechanisms responsible are uncertain. The mild stimulus intensities used in chronic VNS suggest activation of myelinated primary visceral afferents projecting to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). Here, we monitored the activity of second and higher order NTS neurons in response to peripheral vagal activation using therapeutic VNS criteria. A bipolar stimulating electrode activated the left cervical vagus nerve, and stereotaxically placed single tungsten electrodes recorded u

Drosophila-Cdh1 (Rap/Fzr) a regulatory subunit of APC/C is required for synaptic morphology, synaptic transmission and locomotion.

The assembly of functional synapses requires the orchestration of the synthesis and degradation of a multitude of proteins. Protein degradation and modification by the conserved ubiquitination pathway has emerged as a key cellular regulatory mechanism during nervous system development and function (Kwabe and Brose, 2011). The anaphase promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) is a multi-subunit ubiquitin ligase complex primarily characterized for its role in the regulation of mitosis (Peters, 2002). In recent years, a role for APC/C in nervous system development and function has been rapidly emergin

GABAergic neuron specification in the spinal cord, the cerebellum, and the cochlear nucleus.

In the nervous system, there are a wide variety of neuronal cell types that have morphologically, physiologically, and histochemically different characteristics. These various types of neurons can be classified into two groups: excitatory and inhibitory neurons. The elaborate balance of the activities of the two types is very important to elicit higher brain function, because its imbalance may cause neurological disorders, such as epilepsy and hyperalgesia. In the central nervous system, inhibitory neurons are mainly represented by GABAergic ones with some exceptions such as glycinergic. Altho

Roles of Hostility and Depression in the Association between the MAOA Gene Polymorphism and Internet Gaming Disorder.

The metabolism of bioamine in the central nervous system contributes to the development of addiction. We examined the roles of hostility and depression in the association between internet gaming disorder (IGD) and monoamine oxidase-A (MAOA) EcoRV polymorphism (rs1137070). A total of 69 adults with IGD and 138 without IGD were recruited through diagnostic interviewing. We evaluated participants for rs1137070, depression, and hostility. The participants with the TT genotype of rs1137070 had a higher odds ratio of 2.52 (1.37-4.64) for IGD compared with the C carriers. Expressive hostility behavio

Increased levels of CSF CD59 in neuromyelitis optica and multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Complement activation is important in multiple sclerosis (MS) and is essential for anti-aquaporin 4 antibodies to damage the central nervous system in neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Little is known about the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) regulators of complement activation in NMO and MS. We determined whether CSF CD59, which is a complement regulator and C5b-9 formation inhibitor, is involved in the pathogenesis of NMO and MS. METHODS: We analyzed CSF levels of CD59 in 30 patients with NMO, 22 patients with MS, and 24 patients with non-inflammatory neurological disorders (NINDs).

The Importance of Thrombin in Cerebral Injury and Disease.

There is increasing evidence that prothrombin and its active derivative thrombin are expressed locally in the central nervous system. So far, little is known about the physiological and pathophysiological functions exerted by thrombin in the human brain. Extra-hepatic prothrombin expression has been identified in neuronal cells and astrocytes via mRNA measurement. The actual amount of brain derived prothrombin is expected to be 1% or less compared to that in the liver. The role in brain injury depends upon its concentration, as higher amounts cause neuroinflammation and apoptosis, while lower

Celecoxib paradoxically induces COX-2 expression and astrocyte activation through the ERK/JNK/AP-1 signaling pathway in the cerebral cortex of rats.

Previous studies have shown that celecoxib or NSAID may paradoxically induce cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and trigger inflammation-like responses in airway smooth muscle cells and renal mesangial cells. Despite the extensive research on celecoxib, its atypical biological effect on the induction of COX-2 in astroglial cells within the central nervous system (CNS) remains unexplored. In the present study, we investigated the impact of celecoxib on COX-2 and Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) expression and explored the mechanisms underlying celecoxib-regulated COX-2 expression in cort

Continuous positive airway pressure therapy lowers vagal tone in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep apnoea, which constitutes a major social problem because of its high prevalence and its emerging association with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, is known to affect autonomic nervous system activity. We assessed the hypothesis that treatment of sleep apnoea patients with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) alters the indices of heart rate variability (HRV) that reflect sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system activity. METHODS: We studied 26 patients (18 men, aged 49.2 +/- 7.6 years) with obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome. In all pa

The Elevated Central Chemosensitivity in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients with Hypertension.

PURPOSE: Hypertension is a common comorbidity in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in which dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system plays an integral part. Chemoreflex is essential for ventilatory control and cardiovascular activity. This study aimed to determine whether central chemosensitivity was increased in OSA patients with hypertension and the potential role of the autonomic nerve activity in this relationship. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 77 men with OSA were included in this cross-sectional study. We measured hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR) by the rebreathing method unde

Production of Lactobacillus brevis ProGA28 attenuates stress-related sleep disturbance and modulates the autonomic nervous system and the motor response in anxiety/depression behavioral tests in Wistar-Kyoto rats.

AIMS: Many studies have reported that the production of Lactobacillus brevis is beneficial for sleep, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Other known beneficial effects of Lactobacillus brevis include improvement of anxious or depressive symptoms and better modulation of the autonomic nervous system, both of which impact sleep. In this study, we investigated whether the sleep benefit of Lactobacillus brevis was associated with the modulating effects on the autonomic nervous system and anxious/depressive symptoms. MAIN METHODS: Wistar-Kyoto rats were fed the production of Lactobacill

Autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine changes in patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

To investigate sympathetic nervous system and neuroendocrine changes in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, we determined the plasma level of the catecholamines norepinephrine and epinephrine, as well as cortisol and ACTH in 16 patients (55.3 +/- 8.3 years) with trigeminal neuralgia at four different times during the day (7.00, 13.00, 17.00 and 23.00). Morning and evening values of plasma norepinephrine as well as the daily mean value (dmv) were significantly higher (p < 0.01) in patients with trigeminal neuralgia than in an age- and gender-matched control group. Moreover, morning, afternoon and

Testing a linear time invariant model for skin conductance responses by intraneural recording and stimulation.

Skin conductance responses (SCR) are increasingly analyzed with model-based approaches that assume a linear and time-invariant (LTI) mapping from sudomotor nerve (SN) activity to observed SCR. These LTI assumptions have previously been validated indirectly, by quantifying how much variance in SCR elicited by sensory stimulation is explained under an LTI model. This approach, however, collapses sources of variability in the nervous and effector organ systems. Here, we directly focus on the SN/SCR mapping by harnessing two invasive methods. In an intraneural recording experiment, we simultaneous

Bone resorptive activity of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells after fusion with polyethylene glycol.

The bone remodeling process occurs through bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts, a process involving the contribution of endocrine and nervous systems. The mechanisms associated to differentiation and proliferation of osteoclasts and osteoblasts are considered a potential therapeutic target for treating some erosive bone diseases. The aim of the present study is to explore the feasibility of generating active osteoclast-like cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) following polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced fusion. PEG-fused PBMCs showed TRAP+-multinuc
