OBJECTIVE: To explore the surgical methods and therapeutic effects for the treatment of senile hip fractures.
METHODS: From 2001 to 2006, 136 senility patients (over 75-years-old) were reviewed in the study. We report two cases of acute haematogenous osteomyelitis in the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) in adolescent goalkeepers following trauma of the iliac crest apophysis. Both patients complained of pain over their right ASIS and were pyrexial. They were given antibiotics and were discharged from follow up without complication 64 and 90 days after starting treatment.

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures in the elderly are a common and costly problem, with intertrochanteric fractures accounting for almost half of these fractures. Most intertrochanteric fractures are treated with either a plate-and-screw device or an intramedullary nail device. Although hip fractures make up less than 1% of all children's fractures, they commonly produce late complications such as avascular necrosis, non-union, coxa vara, and premature physeal closure. The present review summarizes the pathogenic mechanisms leading to hip fracture based on epidemiological, experimental, and controlled clinical studies. The estimated lifetime risk of hip fracture is about 14% in postmenopausal women and 6% in men. The incidence of hip fractures increases exponentially with aging, but the time trend in increasing age-specific incidence may finally reach a plateau. Conservative treatment of acetabular fractures mean a long period with immobilisation followed by quite a few of complications that are life-threatening to old patients. Besides that these fractures often cause painful posttraumatic osteoarthritis of the hip joint.
