Trends in Hospitalization Rates, Major Causes of Hospitalization, and In-Hospital Mortality in Rheumatoid Arthritis in the United States From 2000 to 2014.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate national trends in hospitalizations and in-hospital mortality in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: National Inpatient Sample from 2000-2014 and United States Census data were used to study temporal trends in adult RA hospitalizations, reasons for hospitalizations, and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: The data represented 183 983 hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of RA. The annual rates of hospitalization for the primary diagnosis of RA decreased from 76.54 admissions per 1 million in 2000 to 29.96 per 1 million in 2014 (P trend < 0.0001). The hospital mortalit…

[Out-of-hospital airway management with a laryngeal tube or endotracheal intubation for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest : Influence on in-hospital mortality].

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal (ET) intubation has been the gold standard in out-of-hospital airway management for a long time. Recent guidelines … eated thereafter on the intensive care unit of the University Hospital Frankfurt from 2006-2014. In-hospital mortality was 84% versus 85% in the ET and LT group (p = 0.86). No difference regarding in-hospital mortality has been observed between the two airway management techniques in univariate as well as in multivariate mortality analysis (HR = 0.98, 95% confidence …

Hospital days, hospitalization costs, and inpatient mortality among patients with mucormycosis: a retrospective analysis of US hospital discharge data.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare and potentially fatal fungal infection occurring primarily in severely immunosuppressed patients. Because it is so rare, reports in the literature are mainly limited to case reports or small case series. The aim of this study was to evaluate inpatient mortality, length of stay (LOS), and costs among a matched sample of high-risk patients with and without mucormycosis in a large nationally representative database. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using the 2003-2010 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project - Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS)

Impact of the Sister Hospital Program on Maternal Mortality and Neonatal Mortality in Nusa Tenggara Timur Province, Indonesia.

The province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) in the eastern part of Indonesia is known for high maternal mortality ratios (MMRs) and neonatal mortality eates (NMRs). Sister Hospital is a multicenter program, which aims to lower MMRs and NMRs in the deprived areas of Indonesia by providing comprehensive emergency services for maternal and newborn care. In this study, we evaluated the impact of the Sister Hospital program on MMRs and NMRs in 2009-17. We used linear mixed-effects models to analyze the program's effects. Study results suggested that in general, the Sister Hospital program reduced MMR

Burden of Antibiotic Resistance in Hospitalized Children in Kenya: Associations with Mortality, Hospital Stay, and Treatment Costs.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a growing threat to pediatric care, yet data on its clinical and economic burden in low-resource settings remain limited. The impact of antibiotic-resistant infections on mortality, hospital stay, and treatment costs was assessed among children admitted to a national referral hospital in Kenya in the present study. A retrospective review of medical records for pediatric patients (0-12 years) hospitalized with bacterial infections between January 2017 and December 2021 was conducted. Diagnoses included gastroenteritis, pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract infections,

Excess hospitalizations and in-hospital mortality associated with seasonal influenza in Italy: a 11-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Influenza and flu-like syndromes are difficult to monitor because the symptoms are not specific, laboratory tests are not routinely performed, and diagnosis codes are often lacking or incompletely registered in medical records. This may result in an underestimation of hospital admissions, associated costs, and in-hospital mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the public health and economic burden of hospitalisations associated with influenza in Italy, at the national and regional levels. METHODS: This 11-year retrospective study included patients admitted to hospitals…

Evaluating prognostic indicators for in-hospital mortality in Fournier's gangrene: a 7-year study in a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Fournier's Gangrene Scoring Index (FGSI), Simplified FGSI (SFGSI), Uludag FGSI (UFGSI), Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing (LRINEC), Neutrophil-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been devised to assess the risk of mortality in Fournier's Gangrene (FG) patients. However, the effectiveness of these indicators in predicting mortality at the time of admission remains uncertain. The aim of this study is to assess the prognostic efficacy of FG's various indicators on in-hospital mortality. METHODS: This study analyzed 123 patients from Dr. Soetomo Ge…

Mortality attributable to hospital acquired infections with multidrug-resistant bacteria in a large group of German hospitals.

BACKGROUND: According to extrapolations, around 35,000 patients in Germany develop hospital acquired infections (HAI) with a multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) every year, and about 1500 of them die. Previous estimations were based on laboratory data and prevalence studies. Aim of this study was to establish the incidences of hospital acquired MDRO infections and the resulting deaths by expert review. METHODS: Data on patients suffering from a hospital acquired MDRO infection were collected from 32 hospitals from all care levels. Records of patients with MDRO infection who died in the year 2

Higher hospital volume predicts endoscopy but not the in-hospital mortality rate in patients with acute variceal hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Acute variceal hemorrhage (AVH) is an important complication of cirrhosis that carries a high mortality rate. Management of AVH requires early initiation of specialized care that may be more readily available at centers that deal with a high volume of AVH. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to examine the relationship between the annual hospitalization volume and the in-hospital mortality rate for AVH. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study from a national representative sample. SETTING: A 20% sample of all nonfederal short-term hospitals from 37 states participating in the Nationwide Inpatient …

Hospitalization and Hospitalized Delirium Are Associated With Decreased Access to Kidney Transplantation and Increased Risk of Waitlist Mortality.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplant (KT) candidates often experience hospitalizations, increasing their delirium risk. Hospitalizations and delirium are associated with worse post-KT outcomes, yet their relationship with pre-KT outcomes is less clear. Pre-KT delirium may worsen access to KT due to its negative impact on cognition and ability to maintain overall health. METHODS: Using a prospective cohort of 2374 KT candidates evaluated at a single center (2009-2020), we abstracted hospitalizations and associated delirium records after listing via chart review. We evaluated associations between wait
