Two viruses that cause salivary gland hypertrophy in Glossina pallidipes and Musca domestica are related and form a distinct phylogenetic clade.

Glossina pallidipes and Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy viruses (GpSGHV and MdSGHV) replicate in the nucleus of salivary gland cells causing distinct tissue hypertrophy and reduction of host fertility. They share general characteristics with the non-occluded insect nudiviruses, such as being insect-pathogenic, having enveloped, rod-shaped virions, and large circular double-stranded DNA genomes. MdSGHV measures 65x550 nm and contains a 124 279 bp genome (approximately 44 mol% G+C content) that codes for 108 putative open reading frames (ORFs). GpSGHV, measuring 50x1000 nm, contains a

Increased transcription of CYP6D1 causes cytochrome P450-mediated insecticide resistance in house fly.

Insecticide resistance is a major problem that continues to plague efforts to control pests of animals and crops. An important mechanism by which insects become resistant to insecticides is via increased detoxification mediated by the cytochrome P450 microsomal monooxygenases (monooxygenases). One of the fundamental gaps in our knowledge about this resistance mechanism is an understanding of how insects express high levels of the specific cytochrome P450(s) responsible for resistance. One such P450, CYP6D1, causes resistance to pyrethroid in the house fly and is expressed at 9-fold higher leve

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel heterocyclic compounds derived from ammonium thiocyanate for control of Culex pipiens and Musca domestica.

A series of benzo[f]quinoline-based heterocyclic compounds was synthesized through a cyanoacryloyl isothiocyanate intermediate and evaluated for larvicidal and biochemical activity against Culex pipiens and Musca domestica. Eleven derivatives were generated by reacting the intermediate 2 with various nitrogen nucleophiles, yielding pyrimidine, triazole, triazine, and other fused heterocycles. Several compounds showed strong larvicidal effects, with compounds 11, 12, and particularly compound 13 displaying higher potency than the reference insecticide chlorpyrifos, especially against Culex pipi

omega-Aga-I: a presynaptic calcium channel antagonist from venom of the funnel web spider, Agelenopsis aperta.

Spider venoms are proving to be important sources of specific ion channel toxins. Venom of Agelenopsis aperta, a funnel web spider, contains a class of polypeptide toxins which blocks neuromuscular synapses at nanomolar concentrations. Detailed physiological analyses of block caused by one of these toxins, omega-Aga-I, show that it suppresses transmitter release at insect and frog neuromuscular junctions and blocks calcium spikes in insect neuronal cell bodies. omega-Aga-I may define a binding site on neuronal calcium channels which is common to both vertebrates and invertebrates.

A deep insight into the sialome of the house fly, Musca domestica, infected with the salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV).

The house fly, Musca domestica, serves as a mechanical vector for numerous pathogens, posing a significant risk to human and animal health. More than two decades ago, the Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) was discovered, infecting both males and females flies and disrupting mating and the reproductive process. While MdSGHV can infect various tissues, its primary replication site is the house fly salivary gland. It is well established that arthropod salivary glands play an important role not only in acquiring food but also in transmitting pathogens. Therefore, understand

Laboratory and field assessment of cyantraniliprole relative to existing fly baits.

BACKGROUND: Toxic fly baits are commonly used for fly control in California animal operations. However, resistance development has been a problem. Comprehensive laboratory and field studies were conducted to test commercial baits (imidacloprid, methomyl, dinotefuran, spinosad) and one novel cyantraniliprole bait. A susceptible Musca domestica strain was compared with wild-type M. domestica and Fannia canicularis strains in the laboratory using choice/no-choice tests. Field visitation to baits and both short- and longer-term mortality were documented. RESULTS: Susceptible Musca suffered high m

Monoamine oxidase inhibitory activities of the scorpion Mesobuthus gibbosus (Buthidae) venom peptides.

In the present study, crude venom of Mesobuthus gibbosus (Buthidae), a scorpion distributed all over Anatolia was isolated and purified by the Sephadex G-50 gel filtration and high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation. Two of the five fractions (fractions 4 and 5) obtained from the Sephadex G-50 filtration and detected as lethal on mice and Musca domestica larvae in in vivo toxicity tests, were independently subjected to the HPLC separation. Only one of seven fractions (fraction 5.5*) obtained from the HPLC separation of the fraction 5 was found to be extremely lethal. Sodium dode

Persistence of Marine Bacterial Plasmid in the House Fly (Musca domestica): Marine-Derived Antimicrobial Resistance Genes Have a Chance of Invading the Human Environment.

The house fly is known to be a vector of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in animal farms. It is also possible that the house fly contributes to the spread of ARB and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among various environments. We hypothesized that ARB and ARGs present in marine fish and fishery food may gain access to humans via the house fly. We show herein that pAQU1, a marine bacterial ARG-bearing plasmid, persists in the house fly intestine for 5 days after fly ingestion of marine bacteria. In the case of Escherichia coli bearing the same plasmid, the persistence period exceeded 7 da

BACKGROUND: House flies are of major public health concerns in areas with poor sanitation and hygienic conditions. Unfortunately, sanitation and hygiene have always been ignored in dairy farms particularly in the developing or low-income countries. Management of these flies mostly depends on the awareness regarding associated hazards and protective measures taken by the people to minimize risks associated with flies. The present study therefore explores the knowledge, attitude and practices taken by dairy farmers in Punjab, Pakistan against house flies. METHODS: The present study was based on
