A simple and fast microwave-assisted-extraction (MAE) method has been evaluated as an alternative to solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the determination of six benzodiazepines widely prescribed in European countries (alprazolam, bromazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, lormetazepam and tetrazepam) in human plasma. Human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), also known as prion diseases, are caused by the accumulation of an abnormal isoform of the prion protein in the CNS. HFOV (High frequency oscillatory ventilation) is an effective artificial respiration technique for the treatment of pulmonary disease patients. In HFOV, the pendelluft is one of the important factors in gas transport and mixing mechanisms. Experimental analysis of the pendelluft flow generated in a bronchial tube model of single bifurcation with different volume ratios of daughter branches has been carried out by using time-resolved micro-particle image velocimetry obtaining instantaneous velocity distributions of oscillatory flows in the bronchial tube model at a frequency range of 10-15 Hz.

Human dental plaque is thought to contribute to disease, not only in the oral cavity but also at other body sites. To investigate the pathogenicity of dental plaque in tissues remote from the mouth, we examined the ability of human supragingival dental plaque to induce infective endocarditis (IE) in rats. BACKGROUND: The role of axillary lymph node dissection in the staging of patients with breast carcinoma is currently under evaluation. A latex card agglutination test for detection of antibodies in human African trypanosomiasis is presented. The latex was covalently coated with semipurified surface glycoprotein of Variable Antigen Type LiTat 1.6 of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. Sera from 100 patients infected with T.b. gambiense, 26 patients infected with T.b. rhodesiense and 707 individuals without trypanosomiasis, including 132 malaria seropositives, have been tested. This study describes the ultrastructure of dental plaque and the plaque-enamel interface after 2 and 3 weeks' exposure to a cariogenic challenge. Five dental students carried a total of 25 specimens of smooth surface enamel in intraoral acrylic appliances. During the initial 3 days the volunteers refrained from oral hygiene and performed nine daily mouthrinses with 10% (w/v) solutions of sucrose.
