BACKGROUND/AIM: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an aggressive malignancy due to its increased ability for local metastases and distant lymph node metastases. Extensive cytogenetic analyses have detected chromosome instability (CI) patterns in OSCC including gross chromosome numerical alterations, such as polysomy and sporadically monosomy that negatively affect the biological behaviour of the malignancy. Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare, low-grade salivary gland neoplasm with a predilection for the palate and tongue. A 63-year-old woman presented a 14×14×17-mm mass at the roof of the nasopharynx. Endoscopic resection was performed via a transnasal approach. Histopathological findings of the salivary gland tumor indicated hyalinization of the stroma and neoplastic cells with clear cytoplasm without mucin. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed that the tumor cells were positive for EWSR1 rearrangement. We finally diagnosed this case as HCCC of the nasopharynx. EWS

BACKGROUND: In general, thyroid carcinomas, when they behave aggressively, metastasize to lungs and occasionally to bone and brain. Metastases to other organs are distinctly unusual. Renal metastases have been reported in only 10 patients. Here we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first patient with Hurthle cell thyroid cancer and renal metastasis. The purpose of this study was to compare hybrid capture assay with PCRs using different primers for the L1, E6-E7 regions for the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) genome. One hundred twenty-five cervical smears with normal (n=42) and abnormal (n=83) cytology were investigated. To screen the receptor genes in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with angiogenesis, we performed differential hybridization of the cDNA library of membrane-type protein tyrosine kinases (mPTKs). Ten lesions from eight cases are presented of a rare intra-osseous jaw lesion with the combined histological features of giant cell granuloma and central odontogenic fibroma. Lesions arose over a wide age range and presented as monolocular or multilocular radiolucencies with cortical expansion and, in one case, perforation. Immunoglobulin (Ig) kappa (kappa) and lambda (lambda) light chain mRNA-expressing cells were investigated by in situ hybridization (ISH) to assess the local humoral immune response in human dental periapical lesions.
