A rare case of hydatidiform mole occurring 7 consecutive times in a Chinese woman is presented. She was first seen in 1979 at the age of 23 years, with a molar pregnancy and subsequently had 6 consecutive moles, the last being in July, 1986; at this visit the patient and her husband were very depressed, and convinced that a normal pregnancy was unlikely and requested a hysterectomy. They were warned earlier several times, of the possible long-term consequences of a recurrent mole and that their chance of having a normal baby was very remote. A total hysterectomy was performed at her last prese

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of hydatidiform mole at the cesarean scar site is a rare problem. Few cases have been reported, thus there is not enough information for accurate diagnosis and management of this event.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present 2 cases of an invasive hydatidiform mole embedded in cesarean scar tissue, one presented with occasional hypogastric pain and nausea and another with spotting both with a history of cesarean section. Transvaginal ultrasonography and a considerably high titer of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin blood test suggested the existence of molar pregnanc

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare type of gestational trophoblastic disease originating from the intermediate trophoblast. Compared with hydatidiform mole, invasive hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma, the diagnosis of PSTT is more complicated and lacks specific and sensitive tumor markers. Most PSTT patients demonstrate malignant potential, and the primary treatment of PSTT is hysterectomy. However, metastasis occasionally occurs and even causes death in a small number of PSTT patients. Most PSTT patients are young women hence fertility preservation is an important conside…

The human placenta is an endocrine tissue with a unique capacity for rapid, but tightly controlled, proliferation and invasion. Gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTDs) are placental pathologies with endocrine activity and partially malignant potential and include hydatidiform moles, placental site nodules, and tumors such as placental site trophoblastic tumor and choriocarcinomas. The activating protein-1 (AP-1) family of transcription factors is composed of the cellular homologs of the Jun and Fos oncoproteins, which are immediately involved in cellular proliferation, differentiation, and i

Gestational trophoblastic tumors are a group of diseases spanning from a benign hydatidiform mole, through an invasive mole to a highly malignant form of choriocarcinoma. Choriocarcinoma is a rare but the most malignant and aggressive neoplasm of all the gestational trophoblastic diseases. It grows rapidly and metastasizes into the lungs, liver, and, less frequently, to the brain. The author presents a case of a 26-year-old woman who was, based on previous investigations, referred for a CT examination for suspected brain tumour. On the basis of medical history provided by the patient's husband

BACKGROUND: Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) which includes hydatidiform mole, invasive mole, placental site trophoblastic tumor, and choriocarcinoma is a rare cause of hyperthyroidism due to excess production of placental human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone (hCG) by tumor cells. Molecular mimicry between hCG and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) leads to continuous stimulation of TSH receptor by extremely high levels of hCG seen in these tumors. Consequently, biochemical and clinical hyperthyroidism ensues and it is potentially complicated by thyrotoxic crisis which is fatal unless u…

A peculiar case of gestational trophoblastic disease is described. A 24 year old female with former history of three molar pregnancies, spontaneous abortion and anembryoic pregnancy was admitted because of a newly diagnosed hydatiform mole (ex novo). After uterine curettage followed by a low oral dose of methotrexate (0.5 mg/kg/day) for five days. The HCG levels determined in plasma by beta-HCG- radioinmmunoassay, became negative until four months of follow3 up. An intrauterine device was installed. She resumed HCG positivity a year later and a histerectomy was performed. A post-surgical diagn

The benign hydatidiform mole (partial and complete) practically represents an associated pathology of the first trimester miscarriage; it is considered that it represents the initial pathology, which, evolutionally, may be followed by the appearance of invasive mole and choriocarcinoma. The authors have studied clinical and cytogenetical 61 cases selected according to some specific criteria for the suspicion of molar pregnancy or hydropic abortion and 21 cases that represented the control group made by patients with normal pregnancy which have been presented for legal abortion. In all cases ha
