Isolation of the right subclavian artery with subclavian steal in a child with Klippel-Feil anomaly: an example of the subclavian artery supply disruption sequence.

We studied a patient with Klippel-Feil anomaly and subclavian steal due to isolation of the right subclavian artery. Other anomalies include … responsible for various congenital systemic and neurologic anomalies such as intestinal atresia and hydranencephaly. Subclavian artery supply disruption sequence has been hypothesized to result in Klippel-Feil, Poland, and Möbius anomalies. In this case the vertebral and facial abnormalities may well be related to anomalous subclavian and carotid supply. An embry …

Akabane disease in cattle: congenital abnormalities caused by viral infection. Spontaneous disease.

Akabane disease, an infectious disorder causing congenital abnormalities in calves, was studied in naturally affected calves between 1972 an … avities and thick vascular walls sometimes were seen in the central nervous system in these stages. Hydranencephaly was prominent in the late stage.

[Vascular disruption birth defects are not associated to chromosomal alterations].

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 2 to 35 of newborns present a congenital malformation. Some publications suggest that vascular disruption b … dentified during a 36 month period; in a descending order those were: transverse reduction defects, hydranencephaly and gastroschisis. Two expert cytogenetists performed independent evaluation of the genetic material of the patients, and no chromosomal alterations detectable by G banded karyotype were identified. CONCLUSIONS: It is recommended that genetic couns …

Preferential infection of neuronal and astroglia cells by Akabane virus in primary cultures of fetal bovine brain.

Akabane virus is a member of the genus Bunyavirus; it is pathogenic for ruminants and transmitted by arthropod vectors. Infection of adult cattle and sheep causes a transient viremia without obvious clinical signs, while infection of pregnant animals often causes fetal abnormalities including hydranencephaly, poliomyelitis and arthrogryposis. Infectious virus or viral antigens is present in the brain, spinal cord and skeletal muscle of infected fetuses. To understand the interaction between Akabane virus and bovine brain cells, we investigated the viral tropism using primary cultures of fetal …

Expanding the spectrum of CEP55-associated disease to viable phenotypes.

Homozygosity for nonsense variants in CEP55 has been associated with a lethal condition characterized by multinucleated neurons, anhydramnios, renal dysplasia, cerebellar hypoplasia, and hydranencephaly (MARCH syndrome) also known as Meckel-like syndrome. Missense variants in CEP55 have not previously been reported in association with disease. Here we describe seven living individuals from five families with biallelic CEP55 variants. Four unrelated individuals with microcephaly, speech delays, and bilateral toe syndactyly all have a common CEP55 variant c.70G>A p.(Glu24Lys) in trans with nonse…

A large-scale serological survey of Akabane virus infection in cattle, yak, sheep and goats in China.

Akabane virus (AKAV) is a member of the Simbu serogroup, classified in the genus Orthobunyavirus, family Bunyaviridae. AKAV infection can cause abortion, stillbirth, and congenital arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly in cattle and sheep. The distribution and prevalence of AKAV infection in China is still unknown. A total of 2731 sera collected from 2006 to 2015 in 24 provinces of China from cattle, sheep, goats and yak were examined by serum neutralisation test. The overall seroprevalence rates for AKAV antibodies were 21.3% in cattle (471/2215) and 12.0% (17/142) in sheep or goats, and 0% in y…

Bilateral population receptive fields in congenital hemihydranencephaly.

PURPOSE: Congenital hemihydranencephaly (HH) is a very rare disorder characterised by prenatal near-complete unilateral loss of the cerebral cortex. We investigated a patient affected by congenital right HH whose visual field extended significantly into the both visual hemifields, suggesting a reorganisation of the remaining left visual hemisphere. We examined the early visual cortex reorganisation using functional MRI (7T) and population receptive field (pRF) modelling. METHODS: Data were acquired by means of a 7T MRI while the patient affected by HH viewed conventional population receptive …

Congenital hydranencephalic-hydrocephalic syndrome with proliferative vasculopathy: a possible relation with mitochondrial dysfunction.

We report the case of a fetus aborted at gestation week 20 because of hydranencephalic-hydrocephalic syndrome. The fetus was the third pregnancy of a nonconsanguineous couple whose first child exhibited congenital hydranencephalic-hydrocephalic syndrome associated with muscle histology findings consistent with mitochondrial cytopathy and deficiency of complexes III and IV of the respiratory chain and whose second pregnancy had terminated in an elective abortion on detection of progressive hydrocephalus at gestation week 19. The third pregnancy had a normal course according to obstetric and ult

Behavioral and neurological characteristics of a hydranencephalic infant.

A modified Prechtl neurological examination and the Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale were serially administered to a hydranencephalic infant over the first eight weeks of life. Clinical, roentgenographic, neurological and behavioral findings are reported. In contrast to earlier reports, visual tracking of a moving field and auditory and visual habituation were observed. Further, in addition to previously reported reflex automatisms, the infant also possessed what are termed "socially relevant behavioral automatisms". The implications of these findings are discussed.

Frameshift mutations of the ARX gene in familial Ohtahara syndrome.

PURPOSE: Ohtahara syndrome is one of the most severe and earliest forms of epilepsy and is frequently associated with brain malformations, such as hemimegalencephaly. Recently, longer expansion of the first polyalanine tract of ARX was found to be causative for Ohtahara syndrome without brain malformation, whereas premature termination mutations of ARX were found to cause severe brain malformations, such as lissencephaly or hydranencephaly. Both are designated as ARX-related interneuronopathies. METHODS: We investigated the molecular basis of Ohtahara syndrome in two families, comprising six …

Deformities of chick embryos in experimental Akabane virus infection.

A material containing 10(3.0) approximately 10(5.0) TCID50 of Akabane virus was inoculated into 6-day-old chick embryos by the yolk sac route. Death of embryos did not increase in the course of embryonic development till 18 days of age, as compared with control groups. Later than 18 days of age, however, the numbers of dead and peeping but unhatched embryos increased, making the hatching rate significantly low. Deformities, such as arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly, appeared in almost all the dead and unhatched embryos. They were severe in dead embryos, considerably severe in peeping unhatche…

Isotope cisternography and ventriculography in congenital CNS anomalies.

Isotope studies are well-tolerated examinations in various congenital CNS anomalies and are valuable in demonstrating the presence of associated hydrocephalus, abnormal accumulation of isotope associated with abnormal CSF flow or a failure of absorption. In some cases these studies may be of differential diagnostic value and a helpful indicator in the choice of surgical treatment. These tests do not disturb the CSF equilibrium which is often observed following air or other contrast studies.
