Cytokine Production in Hymenolepis Nana Infection.

BACKGROUND: Although many experimental studies provide convincing evidence that type II immunity is protective against helminths, recent data in mice demonstrate that Th1 is also important in some cestodes like Hymenolepis nana. OBJECTIVES: To identify the role of Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes in immunity against H. nana, the levels of IL-12, IFNgamma, IL-5, and IL-13 were determined in serum of humans infected with this cestode. METHODS: A total of 31 patients (case) with H. nana infection and 30 clinically healthy individuals (control) was included in this study. Measurements of IL-12, IFNgamma,

Infectivity of Hymenolepis diminuta for the jird, Meriones unguiculatus, and utility of this model for anthelmintic studies.

The jird (Meriones unguiculatus) has been shown to be a useful model host for the cestodes Taenia crassiceps and Echinococcus multilocularis. This report outlines a novel model in which hydrocortisone-treated jirds (0.02% in the feed) are infected with another cestode, Hymenolepis diminuta. Jirds were inoculated with 5 freshly harvested cysticercoids of H. diminuta prior to (day 0, -1, or -5) or after (day 1 or 5) switching to medicated feed; in some cases, jirds were never medicated. On days 7, 14, 21, or 28 postinoculation (PI), jirds were killed by CO2 inhalation and their small intestines

[Stimulation of morphological changes in tapeworms from inbred Hymenolepis diminuta--WMS IL1].

The investigations focused on tapeworms obtained as a result of the administration to individual rats a dose of 6 cysticercoids coming from the 39th and 40th generation of one-specimen inbred Hymenolepis diminuta-WMS il1. In 7.5-month old tapeworms the position of genital pores (PGP) was exclusively right-hand side with the genital ducts typical of this feature. Type Op3a proglottids were the most common deviation from the typical number and topography of testes-1p2a (one testis between the ovary and the genital pore marking the poral side and two testes on the aporal side)-in such tapeworms.

Spontaneous Hymenolepis nana infection in a breeding colony of nude mice.

The spontaneous occurrence of a parasitic infection with the dwarf tapeworm Hymenolepis nana is nude mice was observed under conventional conditions. Clinical, pathological and histological observations are described.

Concurrent infections of the trematode Echinostoma caproni and the tapeworms Hymenolepis diminuta and Hymenolepis microstoma in mice.

Superimposing the intestinal tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta on an established infection with the trematode Echinostoma caproni or simultaneous infection of mice with H. diminuta and Hymenolepis microstoma caused destrobilation and expulsion of H. diminuta, whereas establishment and growth of H. microstoma under the same infection regimes were not affected. In contrast, simultaneous superimposition of H. diminuta and H. microstoma on an established E. caproni infection caused destrobilation and expulsion of both H. diminuta and H. microstoma.

Hymenolepis diminuta: one of three enteric pathogens isolated from a child.

This article describes a case of enteritis in a 3.5-yr-old child with persistent diarrhea and the isolation of three gastrointestinal pathogens, including a rare human pathogen Hymenolepis diminuta (rat tapeworm). This is the first reported case in the northeastern United States in 20 yr and demonstrates that persons living in homes infested with rodents and arthropods are at risk of acquiring this infection.

Acuariid, capillariid and hymenolepidid parasites of the dasyurid marsupial Antechinus stuartii Macleay, 1841, from southeastern Australia.

Stammerinema suffodiax sp. n. is described from the dasyurid marsupial Antechinus stuartii. It differs from S. soricis, the only other member of the genus, in lacking lateral body spines, as well as in the spicules and characters of the anterior extremity. As well as redescribing Synhimantus australiensis (Johnston and Mawson, 1952) now collected from the stomach of A. stuartii, a new capillariid, Capillaria rickardi from the stomach and two cestodes Hymenolepis aklei sp. n. and H. bradleyi sp. n. are described from the same host.
