The Challenge of Fibromyalgia Efficacy of Hypnosis in Alleviating the Invisible Pain: A Narrative Review.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a multifaceted and incapacitating functional pain syndrome characterized by continuous, severe, widespread mu … y benefit from hypnotherapy alone or in combination with standard medical therapy. Symptom-oriented hypnosis aims to reduce pain, fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety, and depression, while hypnotherapy focuses on resolving emotional conflicts and unresolved traumas associated with FMS. In conclusion, hypnosis may be a useful and safe adjunct tool for managing …

A neurophenomenological approach to non-ordinary states of consciousness: hypnosis, meditation, and psychedelics.

No contemporary unifying framework has been provided for the study of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NSCs) despite increased interest in hypnosis, meditation, and psychedelics. NSCs induce shifts in experiential contents (what appears to the experiencer) and/or structure (how it appears). This can allow the investigation of the plastic and dynamic nature of experience from a multiscale perspective that includes mind, brain, body, and context. We propose a neurophenomenological (NP) approach to the study of NSCs which highlights their role as catalysts of transformation in clinical pract…

HCN1 Channels Contribute to the Effects of Amnesia and Hypnosis but not Immobility of Volatile Anesthetics.

BACKGROUND: Hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) subtype 1 (HCN1) channels have been identified as targets of ketamine to produce hypnosis. Volatile anesthetics also inhibit HCN1 channels. However, the effects of HCN1 channels on volatile anesthetics in vivo are still elusive. This study uses global and conditional HCN1 knockout mice to evaluate how HCN1 channels affect the actions of volatile anesthetics. METHODS: Minimum alveolar concentrations (MACs) of isoflurane and sevoflurane that induced immobility (MAC of immobility) and/or hypnosis (MAC of hypnosis) were determ…

Current issues in the treatment of specific phobia: recommendations for innovative applications of hypnosis.

Specific phobia is the most common and treatable of the anxiety disorders. Exposure-based therapies are the treatment of choice and empirically validated protocols are available that promise rapid and effective results. In many cases, however, patients are reluctant to comply with demanding schedules of exposure, increasing the risk of treatment failure. Furthermore, in clinical practice, patients often present with multiple phobias and other Axis I and Axis II disorders that can further complicate therapy. This article covers four important issues that have been addressed in the literature: (

Automatic word processing hypnosis and cognitive therapy for psychosis: a case report.

Hallucinations are often perceived as auditory and visual experiences emanating from outside the mind and it is this belief by patients that is a powerfully convincing factor in maintaining psychotic symptoms and accompanying distress. One of the main tasks of cognitive therapy for psychosis is to help the person recognize that the hallucinations emerge from within their own mind for some meaningful reason. A change in meaning can change a person's affective and behavioral responses to hallucinatory phenomena. Automatic Word Processing (AWP) hypnosis is a novel way to help a person realize tha…

Hypnosis for the control of pain associated with external cephalic version: a comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of hypnosis to reduce pain and facilitate external cephalic version (ECV). DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: Geneva University Hospitals, Switzerland. PARTICIPANTS: 63 women attempting ECV under hypnosis from 2010 to 2011 were compared with 122 women who received standard care from 2005 through 2008. INTERVENTION: Immediately after the ECV attempt, both groups completed the same questionnaire evaluating the participants' pain (visual analogue and verbal rating scales) and experience with the procedure. Physicians also completed a questionnaire that elici…

[Evaluation of hypnosis in pain management during photodynamic therapy: a pilot study].

BACKGROUND: Pain is the main adverse effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and few effective analgesic methods are currently available. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of hypnoanalgesia with the use of PDT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between August 2011 and February 2013, a hypnoanalgesia session was proposed to patients requiring PTD for the treatment of (pre)carcinomatous lesions. At the end of the hypnosis session, patients evaluated their pain on a numeric pain scale (NPS) of 0 to 10. RESULTS: Twelve patients of average age 74.6 years were included. The indication for PDT was actinic kera…

The efficacy of hypnosis as an intervention for labor and delivery pain: a comprehensive methodological review.

This paper presents a comprehensive methodological review of research on the efficacy of hypnosis for reducing labor and delivery pain. To be included, studies were required to use a between-subjects or mixed model design in which hypnosis was compared with a control condition or alternative intervention in reducing labor pain. An exhaustive search of the PsycINFO and PubMed databases produced 13 studies satisfying these criteria. Hetero-hypnosis and self-hypnosis were consistently shown to be more effective than standard medical care, supportive counseling, and childbirth education classes in…

Hypnosis in the treatment of anticipatory nausea and vomiting in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: In addition to nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy treatment, cancer patients can experience these side effects … d at least four treatment cycles. All of them were submitted to induction of relaxation followed by hypnosis. RESULTS: In all subjects anticipatory nausea and vomiting disappeared, and major responses to chemotherapy-induced emesis control were recorded in almost all patients. CONCLUSIONS: The experience highlights the potential value of hypnosis in the …

Effects on suggestibility of a new method of active-alert hypnosis: alert hand.

Research has shown that the active-alert method described by Bányai and Hilgard (1976) produces a similar increase on suggestibility as rela … t method but not during the alert hand method. The alert hand method extends the benefits of active hypnosis to individuals who may have difficulties with the physical demands required by the active-alert method, and it seems to enhance suggestibility even more.

The use of hypnosis in a deaf patient with multiple personality disorder: a case report.

We present the first report of multiple personality disorder (MPD) in a prelingually deaf patient and the first description of alter personalities as the source of auditory hallucinations in a nonpsychotic deaf person. This young woman's history and clinical symptoms of MPD did not differ from those of hearing patients. A hypnotic trance was induced by instructing the patient in muscle relaxation, modeling relaxation with exhalation, and having the patient focus her gaze on the hypnotist repeatedly fingerspelling R-E-L-A-X. Hypnosis facilitated automatic handwriting, allowed the first meeting …

Preliminary Survey Data From an App-Delivered Hypnosis Intervention for Smoking Cessation.

Introduction: Hypnosis-based apps geared toward smoking cessation are among the most downloaded by individuals wanting to reduce or stop smoking. However, to date, there are few evaluations regarding the use or efficacy of hypnosis apps for smoking cessation. Finito is an empirically-based mHealth app developed by Mindset Health designed to provide users with a three-week hypnotherapy program to quit smoking. This study aimed to examine demographic and clinical characteristics of Finito app users and conduct a preliminary analysis of survey data from participants of the program. Method: Finito…

Improved Individualized Patient-Oriented Depth-of-Hypnosis Measurement Based on Bispectral Index.

Total intravenous anesthesia is an anesthesiologic technique where all substances are injected intravenously. The main task of the anesthesiologist is to assess the depth of anesthesia, or, more specifically, the depth of hypnosis (DoH), and accordingly adjust the dose of intravenous anesthetic agents. However, it is not possible to directly measure the anesthetic agent concentrations or the DoH, so the anesthesiologist must rely on various vital signs and EEG-based measurements, such as the bispectral (BIS) index. The ability to better measure DoH is directly applicable in clinical practice-i…

Hypnosis and alopecia areata: Long-term beneficial effects on psychological well-being.

Although there often exists important psychological comorbidity in patients with alopecia areata, few studies have investigated the role of psychotherapeutic interventions. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the long-term evolution of psychological symptoms in twenty-one patients with refractory alopecia areata. Patients received 10 individual sessions of hypnosis during an approximate 6-month period. Before treatment, patients presented a pathological psychological comorbidity. After treatment, a significant amelioration of alexithymia, anxiety, depression and mental …

Hypnosis and cognitive-behavioral therapy during breast cancer radiotherapy: a case report.

This case report describes an effort to control two primary side-effects of breast cancer radiotherapy (fatigue and skin discomfort) that used a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy with hypnosis (CBTH). Two patients, matched on demographic and medical variables (marital status, employment status, number of children, cancer diagnosis, surgical history, radiation dose), were compared: one who received a CBTH intervention and one who received standard care. Results were consistent with the view that CBTH was effective in managing fatigue and skin discomfort, and increasing relaxation.

Can hypnosis reduce hot flashes in breast cancer survivors? A literature review.

Hot flashes are a significant problem for many breast cancer survivors and can cause discomfort, insomnia, anxiety, and decreased quality of life. In the past, the standard treatment for hot flashes has been hormone replacement therapy. However, recent research has found an increased risk of breast cancer in women receiving hormone replacement therapy. As a result, many menopausal women and breast cancer survivors reject hormone replacement therapy and many women want non-pharmacological treatment. In this critical review we assess the potential use of hypnosis in reducing the frequency and in…

Using hypnosis to help deaf children help themselves: report of two cases.

This is a report of deaf children who demonstrated the ability to quickly learn hypnotic skills and apply them effectively to the management of their problems. The children were taught hypnosis through American Sign Language, their preferred mode of communication. As with hypnosis with hearing children, we focused upon induction with fantasy and imaginative involvement, creation in imagination of a metaphor for, or imagery of, the desired outcome, and associated sense of pride (ego-strengthening), positive expectation, and teaching self-hypnosis to emphasize the importance of repeated, daily p…
