Experiences of patients with primary HIV diagnosis in Kermanshah-Iran regarding the nature of HIV/AIDS: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: A diagnosis of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection causes a wide range of mental challenges regarding the meaning and understanding of such a diagnosis because of the specific nature of HIV and its social consequences. AIDS patients perceived their disease as multidimensional Stigma and rejection and even discrimination and insult in receiving health services. Therefore, a deep awareness and understanding of an individual's meaning and interpretation of a HIV-positive diagnosis and their relevant experiences are essential for providing better care. OBJECTIVE: This study a

Characterization and genome analysis of novel phage vB_EfaP_IME195 infecting Enterococcus faecalis.

Enterococcus faecalis is one of the main bacteria in the human and animal intestine but is also classed as an opportunistic pathogen. During normal growth, E. faecalis produces natural antibiotics and is conducive to human health. As ectopic parasites, E. faecalis is capable of causing infective endocarditis, neonatal sepsis, bloodstream infections, bacteremia, and intraabdominal infections. With the incidence of antibiotic resistance reaching crisis point, it is imperative to find alternative treatments for multidrug-resistant infections. Using phage for pathogen control is a promising treatm

Families' Experience of Family Therapy by Videoconference During the First Lockdown: A Qualitative Study.

To ensure continuity of care during the Covid-19 pandemic, family therapy sessions were maintained via videoconferencing. Few studies evaluate the effectiveness of this modality. This exploratory qualitative study gathered the experiences of families who underwent videoconferencing family therapy during the first French lockdown and in-person therapy before and after. This study was conducted in France, within a department of adolescent medicine and psychiatry. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight families and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results

Deep phylogenetic-based clustering analysis uncovers new and shared mutations in SARS-CoV-2 variants as a result of directional and convergent evolution.

Nearly two decades after the last epidemic caused by a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), newly emerged SARS-CoV-2 quickly spread in 2020 and precipitated an ongoing global public health crisis. Both the continuous accumulation of point mutations, owed to the naturally imposed genomic plasticity of SARS-CoV-2 evolutionary processes, as well as viral spread over time, allow this RNA virus to gain new genetic identities, spawn novel variants and enhance its potential for immune evasion. Here, through an in-depth phylogenetic clustering analysis of upwards of 200,000 whole-

Old diseases and contemporary crisis. Inherited blood disorders in the Sultanate of Oman.

This contribution draws on ethnographic research conducted in Oman on inherited blood disorders (IBD). By interpreting results from population genomics studies that trace mutation processes over centuries of human activities, lay-representations of IBD often consider them historical evidence. The perceived spread of IBD in Oman may thus provide unusual historical depth in a country where past conflicts have been erased from historiography and representations of time are politically prescribed. Through the notions of crisis and diversification, this contribution shows how IBD's chronicity chall

Beyond the Boundaries of the Psyche: An In-Depth Examination of the Recovery Processes From Existential Vacuum and Coping Strategies of Psychologically Traumatised Individuals-A Qualitative Study.

AIM: This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the posttraumatic search for meaning and inner transformation experiences of psychologically traumatised individuals by examining their coping strategies and recovery from the existential vacuum through a phenomenological approach. INTRODUCTION: It is known that trauma creates not only a psychological but also an existential crisis in individuals and triggers a search for meaning; however, studies on how this process is reflected in the subjective experiences of individuals are limited. METHOD: The study was conducted with a qualitat

Lifetime Nonprescribed Opioid Use by Sex, Race/Ethnicity, and Sexual Identification Among U.S. High-School Students.

INTRODUCTION: The opioid crisis continues to be a public health concern. Little attention has been given to the relationship between the intersectional heterogeneity of racial/ethnic identification and sexual/gender minority status on opioid use among U.S. high-school students and how this risk varies by sex. METHODS: Data were derived from the national 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N=20,103) for U.S. high-school students. This study estimated the odds of lifetime nonprescribed opioid use (n=2,465) among exposures race/ethnicity and sexual/gender minority status and stratified by sex. RES

Varying circumstances surrounding opioid toxicity deaths across ethno-racial groups in Ontario, Canada: a population-based descriptive cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The North American toxic drug crisis has been framed as an epidemic primarily affecting white people. However, evidence suggests that deaths are rising among racialised people. Accordingly, we sought to describe and compare characteristics and circumstances of opioid toxicity deaths across ethno-racial groups. METHODS: We conducted a population-based, descriptive cross-sectional study of all individuals who died of accidental opioid toxicity in Ontario, Canada between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2021. Decedents were categorised as Asian, black, Latin American or white. We summarised

The psychodynamic of panic attacks: a useful integration of psychoanalysis and neuroscience.

This article tries to explain, in the light of some neuroscientific and psychoanalytical considerations, the repetitive pattern of panic attacks. Freud considered the panic attack as an 'actual neurosis' not involving any conflictual process. Recent neuroscientific findings indicate that psychosomatic reactions, set off by a danger situation, depend on the primitive circuit of fear (including the amygdala) characterised by its speed, but lack accurate responses and may also be activated by harmless stimuli perceived erroneously as dangerous. The traumatic terror is stored in implicit memory an

Immune mediated myasthenia gravis in children, current concepts and new treatments: A narrative review article.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is the most frequent transmission disease in the neuromuscular junction. Juvenile myasthenia gravis (JMG) is an autoimmune antibody-mediated disease of postsynaptic endplate defined as MG presentation in patients before the age of 18 years old. While many clinical features of JMG are identical to the adults, there are some significant differences between them regarding presentation, clinical course, antibody level, and thymus histopathology. In JMG, ocular symptoms are more frequent, the clinical course is comparably benign, and the outcome is better than adult MG. Antib

The chronic myeloid leukemia stem cell.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal stem cell disorder that is characterized by the acquired chromosomal translocation BCR-ABL. This gives rise to a constitutively active tyrosine kinase deregulation of the normal mechanisms of cell cycle control. In the normal hematopoietic system, hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) self-renew to form identical daughter cells but also differentiate to mature blood cells. Leukemic stem cells (LSC) share these properties of self-renewal and also differentiate to mature leukemic cells. LSC have been isolated from patients with CML: these cells give rise to le

Pancreatic hormones, insulin/glucagon molar ratios, and somatostatin as determinants of avian carbohydrate metabolism.

The endocrine pancreas of birds contains cell populations similar, if not identical, to those found in mammalian pancreata, although the topographical distributions of these cell types differ to some extent. Insulin-secreting (B) cells, glucagon-secreting (A) cells, somatostatin-secreting (D) cells, and pancreatic polypeptide-secreting (PP or F) cells are distributed unequally among the four pancreatic lobes, with most of the A cells located in the third and splenic lobes and PP cells residing in both islet tissue and in acinar tissue. Glucagon appears to be a (the?) major pancreatic hormone i

Demystification of novel plastic-degrading enzymes identified from fungal genomes through integrated bioinformatics approaches.

Plastic pollution threatens lives, since only 9% of 8300 MMT of plastic has ever been recycled. Fungal enzymes offer a vital, eco-friendly solution to this crisis. Consequently, there is limited information regarding these enzymes from different fungal genomes. To find the functionalities of these proteins, several in-silico characterizations have been conducted, along with docking analyses to evaluate interactions with common plastics (LDPE, PVC, HDPE, PP, PS, PCL, Nylon, PET, DBP, DEP, and BPA). Utilizing BLASTp with AfLaccase, AnLipase, FoCutinase, and AtPeroxidase as queries, identify 56 L

Redefining 'normal': A Canadian case study of cancer survivors' experiences remaining and/or returning to work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As cancer survival rates increase in Canada, a growing number of working-age individuals face challenges returning to work after treatment. This study examines the experiences of Canadian cancer survivors who remained in or returned to the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were cancer survivors aged 25-62 who had been employed prior to their diagnosis. They completed a brief online survey about their return-to-work (RTW) experiences and were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview. Seven participants took part in the interviews, which were transcribed and analy

Chromosome 3p deletion leads to extensive genomic alterations in diverse cancers and confers synthetic lethality in uveal melanoma.

Chromosome 3p (chr3p) is frequently deleted in multiple cancers, indicating the presence of shared tumor suppressors. Analysis of genomic alterations in 33 different cancer types implicates the deletion or deleterious mutations of SET-domain-containing 2 (SETD2) at chr3p21 in significantly facilitating the formation of isochromosomes, consisting of two identical mirror-imaged arms, thereby promoting genomic instability conducive to large-scale chromosomal rearrangements and rapid cancer genome evolution. Fracturing of dicentric isochromosomes during cell division is pervasive and follows the d

The embodiment of exclusionary displacement pressure: Intersections of housing insecurity and mental health in a Hispanic/Latinx immigrant neighborhood.

Gentrification, growing income inequality, urban development, and the affordable housing crisis necessitate understanding the impact of the concern of displacement on health - prior to or even in the absence of a displacement event. In this paper, I use the term "exclusionary displacement pressure" to unify the literature on exclusionary displacement and displacement pressure, highlighting the disproportionate and inequitable impacts of displacement pressure among communities of color. Through following 35 residents over 2.5-years (2019-2022) in one predominantly low-income Hispanic/Latinx imm

FedSGDCOVID: Federated SGD COVID-19 Detection under Local Differential Privacy Using Chest X-ray Images and Symptom Information.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has created an unprecedented global crisis because of its detrimental effect on the global economy and health. COVID-19 cases have been rapidly increasing, with no sign of stopping. As a result, test kits and accurate detection models are in short supply. Early identification of COVID-19 patients will help decrease the infection rate. Thus, developing an automatic algorithm that enables the early detection of COVID-19 is essential. Moreover, patient data are sensitive, and they must be protected to prevent malicious attackers from revealing information through model upda
