The illusion of malignancy: a rare case of post-hysterectomy gossypiboma misinterpreted as ovarian cancer.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gossypiboma, or retained surgical sponge, is a rare iatrogenic complication post-surgery, often mimicking malignancies like ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women. This leads to unnecessary oncologic interventions, patient anxiety, and procedural risks. Incidence ranges from 1:1000 to 1:18 000 procedures, with hysterectomies at higher risk due to human errors in counting. Recognizing imaging features is crucial to prevent misdiagnosis, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary evaluation and preventive protocols in gynecological surgery. CASE PRESENTATION:

Optimizing the mirror illusion during mirror therapy: evidence from unimpaired individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Mirror therapy has demonstrated functional benefits for patients recovering from hemiparetic stroke, with its effectiveness primarily attributed to the induction of a compelling visual illusion that engages sensorimotor networks. Although previous research has identified various intervention parameters influencing therapeutic outcomes, a comprehensive understanding of their effects on the illusory experience remains limited. This study investigated how four critical parameters-mirror size (large vs. small), object manipulation (present vs. absent), task complexity (simple vs. com

New evidence for the sensorimotor mismatch theory of weight perception and the size-weight illusion.

The size-weight illusion is a phenomenon where a smaller object is perceived heavier than an equally weighted larger object. The sensorimotor mismatch theory proposed that this illusion occurs because of a mismatch between efferent motor commands and afferent sensory feedback received when lifting large and small objects (i.e., the application of too little and too much lifting force, respectively). This explanation has been undermined by studies demonstrating a separation between the perceived weight of objects and the lifting forces that are applied on them. However, this research suffers fr

Illusion of control or passive superstition? A comparison of two explanations for irrational gambling beliefs.

OBJECTIVE: The "illusion of control" is a dominant cognitive illusion in disordered gambling, but its role in shaping irrational gambling be … (95% CI [1.08, 1.10]) overwhelmingly predicted our outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Active choice elements in illusions of control may have been overemphasized in irrational gambling beliefs compared to passive superstitions. Temporal Summation of the Thermal Grill Illusion is Comparable to That Observed Following Noxious Heat.

The thermal grill illusion (TGI) describes a peculiar or even painful percept caused by non-noxious, interlaced warm and cold stimuli. It involves the glutamatergic system and is affected in putatively nociplastic syndromes such as fibromyalgia. The glutamatergic system is also involved in wind-up, that is, the increased activation of spinal neurons following repeated noxious stimulation leading to a temporal summation of perceived stimulus intensity. Here we combined both stimulation methods to further investigate whether non-noxious stimuli as employed in the TGI can lead to a similar summat

Distinct Contributions of Genes and Environment to Visual Size Illusion and the Underlying Neural Mechanism.

As exemplified by the Ebbinghaus illusion, the perceived size of an object can be significantly biased by its surrounding context. The phenomenon is experienced by humans as well as other species, hence likely evolutionarily adaptive. Here, we examined the heritability of the Ebbinghaus illusion using a combination of the classic twin method and multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Results show that genes account for over 50% of the variance in the strength of the experienced illusion. Interestingly, activations evoked by the Ebbinghaus stimuli in the early visual cortex are exp

Comparison of Functional Connectivity during Visual-Motor Illusion, Observation, and Motor Execution.

This study investigated the functional connectivity during visual-motor illusion and compared it with observation and motor execution using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Thirty subjects were randomly assigned to: illusion, observation, and motor execution group. Illusion group watched own finger joint movement video image and induced kinesthetic illusion, while the other group only performed observation or motor execution. Continuous brain activity was measured using fNIRS and functional connectivity was analyzed. The illusion group perceived (using 7-point Likert scale) a hig

Development of Right-hemispheric Dominance of Inferior Parietal Lobule in Proprioceptive Illusion Task.

Functional lateralization can be an indicator of brain maturation. We have consistently shown that, in the adult brain, proprioceptive processing of muscle spindle afferents generating illusory movement of the right hand activates inferior frontoparietal cortical regions in a right-side dominant manner in addition to the cerebrocerebellar motor network. Here we provide novel evidence regarding the development of the right-dominant use of the inferior frontoparietal cortical regions in humans using this task. We studied brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging while 60 right-h

The contribution of fronto-parietal regions to sentence comprehension: insights from the Moses illusion.

To interpret a sentence, the reader must not only process the linguistic input, but many times has also to draw inferences about what is implicitly stated. In some cases, the generation and integration of inferred information may lead to semantic illusions. In these sentences, subjects fail to detect errors such as in "It was two animals of each kind that Moses took on the ark" despite knowing that the correct answer is Noah, not Moses. The relative inability to notice these errors raises questions about how people establish and integrate inferences and which conditions improve error detection…

[Hypoglobus--illusive or real? Etiologies of vertical globe displacement in a tertiary referral centre].

BACKGROUND: While exophthalmus is quantifiable with readily available measurement tools, there is no such tool for hypoglobus/hyperglobus. Despite its possible life-threatening causes only few articles address the etiologies of vertical globe displacement in the current literature. The aim of our study was to describe etiologies of hypoglobus and to analyze the ratio of malignant diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 3000 portrait photographs taken in our ophthalmology department between 2005 and 2009 were retrospectively screened for patients with vertical globe displacement. Pictures were assesse

Aristotle's illusion reveals interdigit functional somatosensory alterations in focal hand dystonia.

In focal hand dystonia, the cortical somatosensory representation of the fingers is abnormal, with overlapping receptive fields and reduced interdigit separation. These abnormalities are associated with deficits in sensory perception, as previously demonstrated by applying tactile stimuli to one finger at a time. What is still unknown is whether the sensory deficits can be observed when tactile perception involves more than one finger. To address this issue, we applied 'Aristotle's illusion' to 15 patients with focal hand dystonia, 15 patients with dystonia not affecting the hand (blepharospas

Confuse your illusion: feedback to early visual cortex contributes to perceptual completion.

A striking example of the constructive nature of visual perception is how the human visual system completes contours of occluded objects. To date, it is unclear whether perceptual completion emerges during early stages of visual processing or whether higher-level mechanisms are necessary. To answer this question, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to disrupt signaling in V1/V2 and in the lateral occipital (LO) area at different moments in time while participants performed a discrimination task involving a Kanizsa-type illusory figure. Results show that both V1/V2 and higher-level visual

The 'Franssen' illusion for short duration tones is preattentive: a study using mismatch negativity.

When a tone burst is divided into two parts, an onset transient and a sustained tone smoothly fading on, and these parts are delivered to two stereophonically located loudspeakers in a room, a listener gains the impression that the whole sound is coming from the loudspeaker that actually emits merely the transient. Due to this auditory illusion known as the 'Franssen effect' (FE), the physical and the perceived lateralizations of the sustained sound become different. A two-block mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm was used to investigate the stage of auditory processing at which this segregatio

The effect of fatigue on abnormal vibration induced illusion of movement in idiopathic focal dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Perception of vibration induced illusionary movement (VIIM) is subnormal in dystonic patients, suggesting abnormal sensory-motor processing in patients with idiopathic focal dystonia. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of fatigue on VIIM in patients with idiopathic torticollis. METHODS: An illusionary sensation of arm extension was evoked by an 80 Hz transcutaneous vibratory stimulus applied to the biceps brachii tendon while the arm was restrained. Blindfolded patients attempted to copy the perceived movement of the vibrated arm with the opposite (tracking) arm and the change in

Dissociative states with abnormal temporal lobe EEG. Multiple personality and the illusion of possession.

Twelve patients with clinical and EEG manifestations reminiscent of temporal lobe epilepsy reported symptoms of dissociative states. In seven of these patients, the clinical picture was consistent with multiple personality, whereas the other five had the illusion of supernatural possession. These cases suggest that in selected instances dissociative states may constitute complex behavioral manifestations of chronic limbic epilepsy.
