Quantifying the direct and indirect impact of COVID-19 vaccination: evidence from Victoria, Australia.

Vaccines not only directly protect vaccinated individuals but also contribute to protecting the entire population via indirect herd-immunity benefits. However, researchers have long struggled to quantify these indirect effects at the population level, hindering the assessment of vaccination programme effectiveness. We developed a new method to estimate these effects, thereby markedly improving measures of the number of infections, hospitalizations and deaths averted by vaccination. Our population-based analysis of 6 440 000 residents of Victoria, Australia, reveals strong indirect effects duri

The immune status of migrant populations in Europe and implications for vaccine-preventable disease control: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring vaccination coverage reaches established herd immunity thresholds (HITs) is the cornerstone of any vaccination programme. Diverse migrant populations in European countries have been associated with cases of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) and outbreaks, yet it is not clear to what extent they are an under-immunized group. METHODS: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize peer-reviewed published primary research reporting data on the immune status of migrants in EU/EEA countries, the UK and Switzerland, calculating their pooled immunity coverage for m

Back to the Future for Influenza Preimmunity-Looking Back at Influenza Virus History to Infer the Outcome of Future Infections.

The influenza virus-host interaction is a classic arms race. The recurrent and evolving nature of the influenza virus family allows a single host to be infected several times. Locked in co-evolution, recurrent influenza virus infection elicits continual refinement of the host immune system. Here we give historical context of circulating influenza viruses to understand how the individual immune history is mirrored by the history of influenza virus circulation. Original Antigenic Sin was first proposed as the negative influence of the host's first influenza virus infection on the next and Imprin

Neonatal Immunity to Bordetella pertussis Infection and Current Prevention Strategies.

Bordetella pertussis is the bacterial agent of whooping cough, an infectious disease that is reemerging despite high vaccine coverage. Newborn children are the most affected, not only because they are too young to be vaccinated but also due to qualitative and quantitative differences in their immune system, which makes them more susceptible to infection and severe manifestations, leading to a higher mortality rate comparing to other groups. Until recently, prevention consisted of vaccinating children in the first year of life and the herd vaccination of people directly in touch with them, but

Generalized herd effects and vaccine evaluation: impact of live influenza vaccine on off-target bacterial colonisation.

Interactions between pathogens and commensal microbes are major contributors to health and disease. Infectious diseases however are most often considered independent, viewed within a one-host one-pathogen paradigm and, by extension, the interventions used to treat and prevent them are measured and evaluated within this same paradigm. Vaccines, especially live vaccines, by stimulating immune responses or directly interacting with other microbes can alter the environment in which they act, with effects that span across pathogen species. Live attenuated infl uenza vaccines for example, while safe

The fundamental link between pneumococcal carriage and disease.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a major cause of worldwide mortality and morbidity, and to a large extent is vaccine-preventable. Nasopharyngeal carriage of pneumococcus precedes disease and is the source of pneumococcal spread between people. The use of vaccine effect on carriage as part of the vaccine licensure and post-vaccine introduction evaluation could facilitate and expand the licensure of new, life-saving pneumococcal vaccines and enable a comprehensive estimate of population effects after vaccine introduction. The authors provide a review of the evidence supporting pneumoc

Association between sexual mixing and genital warts in heterosexual men in Australia: the herd protection from the female human papillomavirus vaccination program.

Australian-born women aged ≤32 years were eligible for the free female human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program introduced in 2007. A total of 1165 heterosexual couples attending the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre between 2011 and 2014 were included in this analysis. Findings showed the odds of having penile warts was 0.52-fold lower among men who had a female partner aged ≤32 years compared with men who had a female partners aged >32 years. This suggests men would have received herd protection from their female partners and hence they are at lower risk of acquiring genital warts.

Potential impact of reactive vaccination in controlling cholera outbreaks: an exploratory analysis using a Zimbabwean experience.

BACKGROUND: To contain ongoing cholera outbreaks, the World Health Organization has suggested that reactive vaccination should be considered in addition to its previous control measures. OBJECTIVES: To explore the potential impact of a hypothetical reactive oral cholera vaccination using the example of the recent large-scale cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe. METHODS: This was a retrospective cost-effectiveness analysis calculating the health and economic burden of the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe with and without reactive vaccination. The primary outcome measure was incremental cost per disabili

Declining population immunity to mumps among Israeli military recruits.

Population-based seroepidemologic data on mumps have not been available in Israel since 1987, and the effects of mass immigration from the Commonwealth of Independent States during the 1990s have not been investigated. We conducted a seroprevalence study of mumps antibodies among 353 Israeli military recruits aged 18-19, based on a representative sample of sera collected in 1999. The overall seroprevalence rate was 83.3%, which was significantly lower than that measured in 1987 (94.1%, P<0.001). Foreign-born subjects had substantially lower seroporevalence rates than their native Israeli count

An alternative to airborne droplet transmission route of SARS-CoV-2, the feco-oral route, as a factor shaping COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chinese scenario, a rapid increase in the frequency of SARS-CoV-2 infections and sudden decline, is uncommon worldwide. Enormous differences in COVID-19 severity among individual countries are the striking findings of the pandemics. It has been demonstrated that a mild course of COVID-19 is associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, less inflammatory response, and better prognosis. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 was observed longer in the gastrointestinal tract than in respiratory swabs, promoting feco-oral transmissions and mild virus attenuation. The spread of the pandemic and its severity m

Modeling for a smallpox-vaccination policy against possible bioterrorism in Japan: the impact of long-lasting vaccinal immunity.

BACKGROUND: There has been concern that variola virus might be held clandestinely elsewhere. Through constructing mathematical model based on the detailed epidemiologic data, we focused on simulating the various possible scenarios arising from a bioterrorist attack whereby smallpox virus was introduced into Japan, and sought to develop the most effective way of nationwide vaccination policy based on the theory of residual immunity. METHOD: The analysis is based on a deterministic mathematical model which predicted the epidemiologic outcome while simultaneously evaluating the effect of any spe

Seroprevalence and persistence of humoral immunity in response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and mild infection in Morocco: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: assessing the seroprevalence and persistence of humoral immunity through population-based serological surveys is crucial for predicting reinfection risk and optimizing vaccination strategies. In Morocco, a mass vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2 has been launched to achieve herd immunity and reduce virus transmission. This study evaluated the humoral immune response to the BBIBP-CorV and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccines in healthy donors with varying doses and infection histories. METHODS: IgG levels were measured via Vircell COVID-19 ELISA, and NAb levels were assessed via the Gen

[Evaluation of the new German measles protection act: An online survey].

INTRODUCTION: The current COVID-19 pandemic reveals the dangerousness of infectious diseases and the threats we face. Often however, effective vaccinations are carried out insufficiently. In March 2020, the German measles protection law was introduced to raise the level of population (herd) immunity to over 95 %. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was conducted among the population on the Measles Protection Act with self-declarations on measles vaccination/illness of participants and their children and evaluation of various sanctions. RESULTS: 1,594 adults participated. 19.3 % were affected

Changes in leukocyte indices of Holstein cows under prolonged heat stress conditions.

Leukocyte indices integrate shifts in innate and adaptive immune function, making them sensitive indicators of physiological stress in dairy cows. This study evaluated how prolonged heat stress affects immune function in Holstein cows using composite leukocyte indices. Eighteen multiparous cows were studied: one group (n = 8) was exposed to 45 days of heat stress (THI ≥ 72), while the control group (n = 10) stayed under thermal comfort. Heat-stressed cows had a 2.2-fold increase in band neutrophils (p = 0.0035) and a 79% rise in the Nuclear Shift Index (NSI; p = 0.0246). Lymphocyte and monocyt

Pseudomonas aeruginosa mastitis outbreaks in sheep and goat flocks: antibody production and vaccination in a mouse model.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is most often associated with sporadic clinical mastitis. Outbreaks among more than 15 Israeli dairy sheep and goat herds presented clinical signs, including gangrenous infections. Characterization of the P. aeruginosa isolates revealed the presence of multiple environmental strains in the various farms, and it was hypothesized that the infected herds were temporarily immunocompromised. In spite of the variability of the isolates, because of the economic impact on the small-ruminant farms, we decided to search for common antigens that might induce an immune response that

Risk Factors for and Prevalence of Failure of Passive Transfer of Immunity in Calves on Dairy Farms in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Failure of passive transfer of immunity (FPTI) is perhaps the most important factor in the health of neonatal calves. Given the variation between countries in FPTI, national data need to be documented to add to the international database for future meta-analyses. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of and risk factors for FPTI in dairy herds in Türkiye. METHODS: Blood serum samples from 1026 calves in 76 dairy herds in 16 provinces of Türkiye were analysed using a digital Brix refractometer to assess FPTI, defined as a Brix value < 8.5%. Data on risk

The effect of underlying clinical conditions on the risk of developing invasive pneumococcal disease in England.

OBJECTIVE: To inform national policy making on the use of the 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine among risk groups we estimated the increased risk of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) outcomes among clinical risk groups. Three years of post 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) data was included to investigate the herd protection effects. METHODS: Over 22,000 IPD patients in England (March 2002-March 2009 - aged 2 and over) were linked to their hospitalisation records. The prevalence of risk factors in these patients was compared to the prevalence of risk factors in the general populat

Rabies vaccinations at the rural-urban divide: successes and barriers to dog rabies vaccination programs from a rural and urban campaign in Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: Dog vaccination against rabies is considered one of the most effective strategies at preventing human deaths from rabies and is a key strategy for eliminating dog-mediated human rabies deaths. Traditional vaccination approaches in Zambia rarely collect operational data to assess coverage and inform subsequent campaigns. METHODS: Following mass vaccination campaigns in rural (Itezhi tezhi) and urban (Lusaka) communities, we evaluated vaccination coverage achieved during the campaigns and characterized and estimated the dog population in these communities. RESULTS: Herd immunity
