Immunological indicators of morbidity in human schistosomiasis mansoni: role of vascular endothelial growth factor and anti-soluble egg antigen IgG4 in disease progression.

Based sonographic examinations of 90 schistosomiasis mansoni, they were divided into five groups: lightly infected, heavily infected, intestinal, early hepatosplenic and periportal fibrosis. Using ELISA, the levels of circulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and anti-soluble egg antigen (SEA) IgG4 were measured in their sera. Compared to normal controls, VEGF levels were significantly raised in all schistosomiasis patients groups except lightly infected and intestinal patients were insignificantly elevated. The level of VEGF correlated with disease progression from lightly infecte

[Studies on the role of nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor in immunological liver injury in mice and effects of new anti-hepatitis compounds on the liver injury].

An immunological liver injury model was established by injection of micro lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into BCG (bacilli Calmette Guéin)-primed mice. It was found that nitric oxide (NO) played dual effects in the liver damage induced by BCG+LPS. The NO coming from phagocytic cells showed toxic effects while those from the other cells displayed beneficial effects. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) released by macrophages was also implicated to be a key factor in the liver damage induced by BCG + LPS. Kupffer cells were involved in BCG + LPS-induced liver injury by releasing NO and TNF. The mechanism(s) b

Protection against melanoma by vaccination with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) and/or vaccinia: an epidemiology-based hypothesis on the nature of a melanoma risk factor and its immunological control.

A multicentre case-control study conducted by the FEBrile Infections and Melanoma (FEBIM) group has demonstrated a reduced risk of melanoma associated with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) and/or vaccinia vaccination in early childhood and/or with infectious diseases later in life. This has led to the recognition of a new risk indicator of melanoma; namely 'not being vaccinated with either with BCG or vaccinia'. On the basis of these findings, we propose a hypothesis of immune surveillance for melanoma induced or enhanced by prior contacts with pathogens unexpectedly cross-reactive to a cellular

Helminth/Protozoan Coinfections in Chronic Fascioliasis Cases in Human Hyperendemic Areas: High Risk of Multiparasitism Linked to Transmission Aspects and Immunological, Environmental and Social Factors.

Research is required to determine whether the coinfections by Fasciola spp. and other parasite species result from poor rural hygiene or reflect underlying epidemiological patterns and causes. Therefore, the role of fascioliasis is analyzed concerning coinfection complexity, risk of multiparasitism, parasite associations, pathogenic implications and their multifactorial causes. Helminth and protozoan coinfections are studied in 2575 previously untreated individuals from four rural hyperendemic areas (Northern Bolivian Altiplano, Peruvian Altiplano and Cajamarca valley, and the Egyptian Nile De

Restoring the adaptive potential of an athlete is of paramount importance not only for the implementation of his training and competitive activities, but also for maintaining health. One of the leading place in complex recovery programs in sports is given to full-fledged optimal nutrition, which provides for meeting the body's requirements not only in energy, macro- and micronutrients, but also in minor bioactive compounds. The use of anthocyanin-containing products is a promising strategy for the normalization of metabolic and immune disorders that develop as a result of intense physical and

TOFA-PREDICT study protocol: a stratification trial to determine key immunological factors predicting tofacitinib efficacy and drug-free remission in psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

INTRODUCTION: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic, inflammatory, musculoskeletal disease that affects up to 30% of patients with psoriasis. Current challenges in clinical care and research include personalised treatment, understanding the divergence of therapy response and unravelling the multifactorial pathophysiology of this complex disease. Moreover, there is an urgent clinical need to predict, assess and understand the cellular and molecular pathways underlying the response to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). The TOFA-PREDICT clinical trial addresses this need. Our primar

Immunological and molecular analyses of the Borrelia hermsii factor H and factor H-like protein 1 binding protein, FhbA: demonstration of its utility as a diagnostic marker and epidemiological tool for tick-borne relapsing fever.

It has been demonstrated that Borrelia hermsii, a causative agent of relapsing fever, produces a factor H (FH) and FH-like protein 1 (FHL-1) binding protein. The binding protein has been designated FhbA. To determine if FH/FHL-1 binding is widespread among B. hermsii isolates, a diverse panel of strains was tested for the FH/FHL-1 binding phenotype and FhbA production. Most isolates (23/24) produced FhbA and bound FH/FHL-1. Potential variation in FhbA among isolates was analyzed by DNA sequence analyses. Two genetically distinct FhbA types, designated fhbA1 and fhbA2, were delineated, and type

How do nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)1 and NF-κB2 defects lead to the incidence of clinical and immunological manifestations of inborn errors of immunity?

INTRODUCTION: Genetic defects affect the manner of the immune system's development, activation, and function. Nuclear factor-kappa B subunit 1 (NF-κB1) and NF-κB2 are involved in different biological processes, and deficiency in these transcription factors may reveal clinical and immunological difficulties. AREAS COVERED: This review article gathers the most frequent clinical and immunological remarkable characteristics of NF-κB1 and NF-κB2 deficiencies. Afterward, an effort is made to describe the biological mechanism, which is likely to be the cause of these clinical and immunological abnor

Immunological studies of chronic ocular toxoplasmosis: up-regulation of major histocompatibility complex class I and transforming growth factor beta and a protective role for interleukin-6.

A murine model was used to characterize the local immune and inflammatory response during ocular toxoplasmosis. Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I, normally expressed at low levels in immune-privileged sites such as the eye, was up-regulated during infection as determined by competitive reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR and immunocytochemistry for both beta2-microglobulin and the MHC class I heavy chain. However, the eyes of chronically infected mice also had increased levels of mRNA transcripts for transforming growth factor beta, a cytokine associated with immune privilege and const

Diversion of the immune response to Neisseria gonorrhoeae from Th17 to Th1/Th2 by treatment with anti-transforming growth factor β antibody generates immunological memory and protective immunity.

UNLABELLED: The immune response to Neisseria gonorrhoeae is poorly understood, but its extensive antigenic variability and resistance to complement are thought to allow it to evade destruction by the host's immune defenses. We propose that N. gonorrhoeae also avoids inducing protective immune responses in the first place. We previously found that N. gonorrhoeae induces interleukin-17 (IL-17)-dependent innate responses in mice and suppresses Th1/Th2-dependent adaptive responses in murine cells in vitro through the induction of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β). In this study using a murine m

Macrophage-derived cytokines in the follicular fluids of women with infertility due to immunological causes. Elevated levels of interleukin 6 and low levels of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor.

The cytokines are (glyco)proteins secreted by lymphoid and non-lymphoid cells which modulate several biological responses including the ovarian function. Interleukin (IL)-1 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha suppress 17beta-estradiol (E2) and progesterone release from granulosa and luteal cells in vitro. TNF-alpha affects negatively folliculogenesis and ovarian maturation. Additional in vivo evidence for a role of this macrophage-derived cytokine came from our recent observation that women with infertility due to immunological causes have elevated intrafollicular fluid levels of TNF-alpha

[Effect of immunosuppressive and cytostatic factors on the immune responses of the body. Communication II. Effect of hydrocortisone on immunologically competent cells (RFC cells and lymphocytes B) in immunized animals (author's transl)].

The effect of hydrocortisone on immunologically competent cells in peripheral blood (lymphocytes B and RFC cells) and on the level of humoral antibodies has been studied in rabbits immunized twice with 10per cent sheep erythrocytes. The animals were divided into two groups. The experimental group, numbering 14 rabbits, was administered 30 mg/kg body weight of hydrocortisone intramuscularly for three consecutive days before the first and second dose of antigen; the 10 rabbits of the control group were administered only the antigen. The results obtained showed that, after immunization and in the
