Investigating Mechanisms of Subcutaneous Preconditioning Incubation for Neural Stem Cell Embedded Hydrogels.

Stem cells are a vital component of regenerative medicine therapies, however, only a fraction of stem cells delivered to the central nervous system following injury survive the inflammatory environment. Previously, we showed that subcutaneous preconditioning of neural stem cell (NSC) embedded hydrogels for 28 days improved spinal cord injury (SCI) functional outcomes over controls. Here, we investigated the mechanism of subcutaneous preconditioning of NSC-embedded hydrogels, with and without the known neurogenic cue, interferon gamma (IFN-γ), for 3, 14, or 28 days to refine and identify subcut

Developing chicken cardiac muscle mitochondria are resistant to variations in incubation oxygen levels.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to hypoxia during vertebrate development can produce abnormal cardiovascular morphology and function. The aim of this study was to examine cardiac mitochondria function in an avian model, the chicken, in response to embryonic development under hypoxic (15% O2), normoxic (21% O2), or hyperoxic (40% O2) incubation conditions. METHODS: Chicken embryos were incubated in hypoxia, normoxia, or hyperoxia beginning on day 5 of incubation through hatching. Cardiac mitochondria oxygen flux and reactive oxygen species production were measured in permeabilized cardiac fibers

Incubator humidity and temperature control in infants born at 22-23 weeks' gestation.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants, especially those born at ≤23 gestational weeks (GW), present with extremes in insensible water loss (IWL) and changes in water balance. AIMS: To prevent water loss from the skin and achieve skin maturation without infection, we investigated transepidermal water loss (TEWL), IWL from the skin (IWL-s), and electrolyte balance with differences in high incubator humidity and temperature control from birth to postnatal 1 month in 22-23 GW and 24-25 GW infants. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SUBJECTS: Extremely preterm infants born at 22-23 GW (n = 11) and 24

Interrupted incubation: How dabbling ducks respond when flushed from the nest.

Nesting birds must provide a thermal environment sufficient for egg development while also meeting self-maintenance needs. Many birds, particularly those with uniparental incubation, achieve this balance through periodic incubation recesses, during which foraging and other self-maintenance activities can occur. However, incubating birds may experience disturbances such as predator or human activity which interrupt natural incubation patterns by compelling them to leave the nest. We characterized incubating mallard Anas platyrhynchos and gadwall Mareca strepera hens' responses when flushed by p

The Effect of Fluctuating Incubation Temperatures on West Nile Virus Infection in Culex Mosquitoes.

Temperature plays a significant role in the vector competence, extrinsic incubation period, and intensity of infection of arboviruses within mosquito vectors. Most laboratory infection studies use static incubation temperatures that may not accurately reflect daily temperature ranges (DTR) to which mosquitoes are exposed. This could potentially compromise the application of results to real world scenarios. We evaluated the effect of fluctuating DTR versus static temperature treatments on the infection, dissemination, and transmission rates and viral titers of Culex tarsalis and Culex quinquefa

Nest-site selection and nest size influence the incubation temperature of Morelet's crocodiles.

In oviparous tetrapods, the nesting-site selection by females is related to the habitat characteristics, which influences nest incubation temperature. Females can directly influence the incubation temperature by choosing certain construction materials or by building nests of different sizes. There are few studies focusing on these aspects in crocodilians that build mound nests. The aim of this study was to determine whether the nest size, its exposure to solar radiation, and the environmental temperature influence the incubation temperature of Morelet's crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) nests.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a systematic review of global incidence, prevalence, infectivity, and incubation.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a fatal disease presenting with rapidly progressive dementia, and most patients die within a year of clinical onset. CJD poses a potential risk of iatrogenic transmission, as it can incubate asymptomatically in humans for decades before becoming clinically apparent. In this Review, we sought evidence to understand the current iatrogenic risk of CJD to public health by examining global evidence on all forms of CJD, including clinical incidence and prevalence of subclinical disease. We found that although CJD, particularly iatrogenic CJD, is rare, the incidence

A Case Report of Babesiosis Seen Outside of its Endemic Area and Incubation Period.

Babesia microti is a parasitic alveolate that is usually transmitted by Ixodes scapularis tick, which also transmits Lyme disease. Babesiosis is endemic in the Northeast and Upper Midwestern regions of the United States. This case report illustrates a 29-year-old Hispanic male who presented to a Florida hospital emergency department with complaints of fever, generalized weakness, and flu-like symptoms over a duration of four days. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with babesiosis infection since he had a travel history to Cape Cod, Massachusetts about 10 weeks before presenting to the hospital. H

Cell Proliferation in the Isolated Brains of Adult Zebrafish Incubated in Artificial Cerebrospinal Fluid.

The high rate of cell proliferation in the zebrafish brain allows one to perform reliable studies on cellular molecules associated with cell proliferation. In this study, we show that 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-labeled cells were detected in the isolated brains of adult zebrafish that were incubated in oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) in vitro. The number of BrdU-labeled cells shown in the in vitro preparation was close to that in the in vivo study and was modified by treatment with various pharmacological agents, such as valproic acid. In parallel to cell proliferation, pr

Incubation periods of enteric illnesses in foodborne outbreaks, United States, 1998-2013.

Early in a foodborne disease outbreak investigation, illness incubation periods can help focus case interviews, case definitions, clinical and environmental evaluations and predict an aetiology. Data describing incubation periods are limited. We examined foodborne disease outbreaks from laboratory-confirmed, single aetiology, enteric bacterial and viral pathogens reported to United States foodborne disease outbreak surveillance from 1998-2013. We grouped pathogens by clinical presentation and analysed the reported median incubation period among all illnesses from the implicated pathogen for ea

Sex chromosome-dependent differential viability of human spermatozoa during prolonged incubation.

STUDY QUESTION: Are there significant differences in the ability of X chromosome-bearing (X) spermatozoa and Y chromosome-bearing (Y) spermatozoa to survive incubation under stressful conditions? SUMMARY ANSWER: Y spermatozoa are more vulnerable to stress than their X counterparts depending on culture period and temperature, and show higher expression of apoptotic proteins. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The primary sex ratio is determined by there being an equal number of spermatozoa carrying X and Y chromosomes. This balance can be skewed by exposure to stressful environmental conditions such as c

The effects of light exposure during incubation on embryonic development and hatchling traits in lizards.

Light is an environmental factor that is known to profoundly affect embryonic development in some oviparous vertebrates, but such effects are unstudied in reptiles. We investigated the light sensitivity of lizard embryos by examining the thickness and light transmittance of eggshells as well as the effect of light on embryonic development and hatchling traits in four lizard species, the Chinese skink (Plestiodon chinensis), the northern grass lizard (Takydromus septentrionalis), the oriental leaf-toed gecko (Hemidactylus bowringii) and the Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus). The eggshells were t

Metabolic responses to chronic hypoxic incubation in embryonic American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Chronic hypoxic incubation is a common tool used to study developmental changes in reduced O2 conditions, and it has been useful for identifying phenotypically plastic periods during ontogeny in laboratory settings. Reptilian embryos can be subjected to natural hypoxia due to nesting strategy, and recent studies have been important in establishing the phenotypic responses of several species to low developmental oxygen. In particular, the cardiovascular responses of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) to low developmental oxygen have been detailed, including a substantial cardiac e

Incubation of Methamphetamine but not Heroin Craving After Voluntary Abstinence in Male and Female Rats.

We recently introduced an animal model of incubation of methamphetamine craving after choice-based voluntary abstinence in male rats. Here we studied the generality of this phenomenon to (1) female rats, and (2) male and female rats with a history of heroin self-administration. We first trained rats to self-administer palatable food pellets for 6 days (6 h per day) for either methamphetamine (0.1 mg/kg/infusion) or heroin (0.1 mg/kg/infusion) for 12 days (6 h/day). We then assessed relapse to drug seeking under extinction conditions after 1 and 21 abstinence days. Between tests, the rats under

Effect of eggshell temperature throughout incubation on broiler hatchling leg bone development.

Leg problems in broiler chickens may partly be prevented by providing optimal circumstances for skeletal development during incubation. One of the factors demonstrated to affect bone development is eggshell temperature (EST), which provides a reliable reflection of embryo temperature. The present experiment aimed to investigate the effect of EST on development and asymmetry of the femur, tibia, and metatarsus in broiler chicken hatchlings. Eggs were incubated from d 0 until hatch at 1 of 4 EST: low (36.9°C), normal (37.8°C), high (38.6°C), and very high (39.4°C). At hatch, chick quality was de

Plasmodium ovale malaria in Brazil: report of an imported case with a prolonged incubation period.

We report the first case of imported Plasmodium ovale in Brazil, confirmed using both conventional microscopy and PCR-based protocols. The patient was a 36-year-old Brazilian male who had been working as a miner in Cabinda Province, Angola. Based on his travel history, the parasite was dormant for at least two years. The relatively long period of incubation of P. ovale may obscure the link between exposure and disease. The recent increase in the number of people travelling to regions where P. ovale is endemic, suggests that a PCR-based protocol should be included as a complementary tool for ma

Cardiac and vascular disease prior to hatching in chick embryos incubated at high altitude.

The partial contributions of reductions in fetal nutrition and oxygenation to slow fetal growth and a developmental origin of cardiovascular disease remain unclear. By combining high altitude with the chick embryo model, we have previously isolated the direct effects of high-altitude hypoxia on growth. This study isolated the direct effects of high-altitude hypoxia on cardiovascular development. Fertilized eggs from sea-level or high-altitude hens were incubated at sea level or high altitude. Fertilized eggs from sea-level hens were also incubated at high altitude with oxygen supplementation.

Age-dependent branching processes for surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases with incubation period.

The purpose of this paper is to review the recent results of the authors in the area of infectious disease modeling by means of branching stochastic processes. This is a new approach involving age-dependent branching models, which turned out to be more appropriate and flexible for describing the spread of an infection in a given population, than discrete time ones. Concretely, Bellman-Harris and Sevast'yanov's branching processes are investigated. It is justified that the proposed models are proper candidates as models of infectious diseases with incubation period like measles, mumps, avian fl
