The Clinicopathologic Features of Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma (IBC) With Lobular Features.

Inflammatory breast carcinoma (IBC) is an aggressive form of breast cancer. Prior studies have reported the presence of lobular histology in a small percentage of tumors from patients with IBC. However, the significance of these lobular features in IBC has yet to be fully characterized. We performed a comprehensive retrospective review of patients with IBC with lobular features (IBC-LF) to evaluate their clinicopathologic features. Our IBC program registry included 524 patients over a 20-year interval, 74 (14%) of whom had lobular features. Pathology material was available for review for 28 pa

In vitro anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity of sulfolipids from the red alga Porphyridium cruentum.

A sulfoglycolipidic fraction (SF) isolated from the red microalga Porphyridium cruentum was analyzed for fatty acid composition and assayed for ability to inhibit, in vitro, the generation of superoxide anion in primed leucocytes and the proliferation of a panel of human cancer cell-lines. Results demonstrated that SF contained large amounts of palmitic acid (26.1%), arachidonic acid (C20: 4 omega-6, 36.8%), and eicopentaenoic (C20:5 omega-3, 16.6%) acids, and noticeable amounts of 16:1n-9 fatty acid (10.5%). It strongly inhibited both the production of superoxide anion generated by peritoneal

Locoregional Nodal Status at Initial Presentation on Ultrasound (US) and Positron Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) Patients is Predictive of Overall Survival.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) is an aggressive breast cancer with poor prognosis. Nodal staging with ultrasound (US) and 18F-FDG PET/CT (FDG PET/CT) is accurate and beneficial for determining locoregional treatment. The aim of this study is to determine if the nodal disease distribution at initial presentation on US and FDG PET/CT can predict overall survival (OS). METHODS: Nodal features of patients with IBC from an Institutional Review Board approved registry, who received both US and FDG PET/CT, were retrospectively analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used

Effects of anti-inflammatory dietary education on sleep disturbances among patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of anti-inflammatory dietary education on sleep disturbances and inflammatory biomarkers in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: A total of 132 patients with sleep disturbances were randomized to receive either a 12-week anti-inflammatory dietary education program based on the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) or usual care. Sleep disturbances were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at baseline and at 12 weeks. Additional outcomes included inflammatory biomarkers, E-

Extent of axillary surgery in inflammatory breast cancer: a survival analysis of 3500 patients.

PURPOSE: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is an aggressive variant for which axillary lymph node (LN) dissection following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) remains standard of care. But with increasingly effective systemic therapy, it is unclear whether more limited axillary surgery may be appropriate in some IBC patients. We sought to examine whether extent of axillary LN surgery was associated with overall survival (OS) for IBC. METHODS: Female breast cancer patients with non-metastatic IBC (cT4d) diagnosed 2010-2014 were identified in the National Cancer Data Base. Cox proportional hazards

Suicide associated with corticosteroid use during chemotherapy: case report.

Corticosteroids are widely known to have a variety of adverse mental effects. Although corticosteroids are frequently used to prevent vomiting induced by chemotherapeutic agent, their mental effects have received little attention in oncology settings. We report the case of a patient who experienced severe depressive symptoms after both the first and second course of treatment with a corticosteroid during chemotherapy and ultimately committed suicide. The temporal and dose-response relationships suggested a possible association between the depressive symptoms and corticosteroid. We ultimately s

The Anti-tumoral Effect of β-D-Mannuronic Acid (M2000) as a Novel NSAID on Treg Cells Frequency and MMP-2, MMP-9, CCL22 and TGFβ1 Gene Expression in Pre-surgical Breast Cancer Patients.

With respect to the role of chronic inflammation in the induction and progression of breast cancer (BC). The relationship between tumor and tumor microenvironment may be a hopeful strategy for BC therapy. According to the effect of β-D-Mannuronic acid (M2000) as a novel non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) on BC murine model and 4T1 cell line, we started to study that was a phase II, randomized, controlled clinical trial. 24 women with BC were included in this study and were followed by fixed oral doses of M2000, 500 mg two times a day (6-8 weeks). Blood samples were collected at basel

Once-Daily Postmastectomy Radiation Therapy Confers Excellent Locoregional Control for Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

PURPOSE: For patients with cT4dM0 inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), improved locoregional control has been reported following modern trimodality therapy that includes hyperfractionated/twice-daily postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT). We evaluated survival outcomes in a contemporary cohort of patients with IBC routinely treated with once-daily PMRT. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively identified 213 patients with stage III IBC treated with neoadjuvant systemic therapy, modified radical mastectomy, and PMRT from January 2006 to December 2022 at a single institution. Routinely, PMRT in

High serum miR-19a levels are associated with inflammatory breast cancer and are predictive of favorable clinical outcome in patients with metastatic HER2+ inflammatory breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Altered serum microRNA (miRNA) levels may be correlated with a dysregulated expression pattern in parental tumor tissue and reflect the clinical evolution of disease. The overexpression of miR-21, miR-10b, and miR-19a is associated with the acquisition of malignant characteristics (increased tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, dissemination, and metastasis); thus, we determined their utility as serum biomarkers for aggressive breast cancer (HER2-overexpressed or -amplified [HER2(+)] and inflammatory breast cancer [IBC]). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In this prospective study,

A decade of infliximab: The Austrian evidence based consensus on the safe use of infliximab in inflammatory bowel disease.

Infliximab (IFX) has tremendously enriched the therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and other immune mediated diseases. Although the efficacy of IFX was undoubtedly proven during the last decade numerous publications have also caused various safety concerns. To summarize the immense information concerning adverse events and safety issues the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology launched this evidence based consensus on the safe use of IFX which covers the following topics: infusion reactions and immunogenicity, skin reactions, opportunistic infections (including tubercul

Clipped Axillary Node as a Potential Surrogate for Overall Axillary Nodal Status in Inflammatory Breast Cancer Patients after Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node dissection is the current standard for management of the axilla in inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). The present study aims to determine whether the initially positive node identified by clip placement accurately represents the overall nodal status of axilla after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in IBC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with IBC who underwent operation (2014-2023). For patients with IBC who had clip placement in a positive axillary node at diagnosis, operative notes, specimen radiographs, and pathology reports

High endogenous CCL2 expression promotes the aggressive phenotype of human inflammatory breast cancer.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with distinct clinical and histopathological features whose molecular basis is unresolved. Here we describe a human IBC cell line, A3250, that recapitulates key IBC features in a mouse xenograft model, including skin erythema, diffuse tumor growth, dermal lymphatic invasion, and extensive metastases. A3250 cells express very high levels of the CCL2 chemokine and induce tumors enriched in macrophages. CCL2 knockdown leads to a striking reduction in macrophage densities, tumor proliferation, skin erythema, and metastasis. These r

Axillary Pathologic Complete Response in Inflammatory Breast Cancer Patients: Implications for SLNB?

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is increasingly utilized after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in responsive adenopathy, particularly with placement of a marking clip in the involved node(s). This may allow a subset of patients to avoid axillary lymph node dissection. SLNB is still discouraged in inflammatory breast cancer (IBC). The purpose of this study is to examine the axillary pathologic complete response (AXpCR) in IBC patients with clinical adenopathy. There may be an implication to approach a subset of IBC patients for SLNB after NAC. METHODS: A single-institution institu

Inflammatory and other breast cancer incidence rate trends by estrogen receptor status in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2001-2015).

PURPOSE: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) rates increased in the United States before the turn of the twenty-first century. We examine trends by estrogen receptor (ER) status since then. METHODS: Using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program for years 2001-2015, we calculated age-adjusted incidence rates for IBC (defined by AJCC TNM category T4d, extent of disease codes, and morphology code 8530) by ER status, which was imputed if unknown, among women aged 25-84 years. For comparison, we included other locally advanced breast cancer and other breast cancers pa

Breast cancer and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: prospective results from the Women's Health Initiative.

We analyzed data from the prospective Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Observational Study to examine the effects of regular use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on breast cancer risk. We studied a population of 80,741 postmenopausal women between 50 and 79 years of age who reported no history of breast cancer or other cancers (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer), and we completed a personal baseline interview that elicited comprehensive health information including data on breast cancer risk factors and NSAID use. All of the cases were adjudicated b

Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and risk of breast cancer: The Spanish Multi-Case-control (MCC) study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) consumption and breast cancer has been repeatedly studied, although the results remain controversial. Most case-control studies reported that NSAID consumption protected against breast cancer, while most cohort studies did not find this effect. Most studies have dealt with NSAIDs as a whole group or with specific drugs, such aspirin, ibuprofen, or others, but not with NSAID subgroups according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System; moreover, scarce attention has been paid to their effect on

Low-dose aspirin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in breast cancer patients treated with infusional chemotherapy after insertion of central vein catheter.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated a high incidence (7.7%) of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in breast cancer patients treated with infusional chemotherapy after insertion of central vein catheters (CVC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-dose aspirin for the prevention of VTE. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a monocentric prospective study, patients with stage II-IV breast cancer, who underwent CVC insertion for continuous infusional chemotherapy, were assigned to receive low-dose aspirin (100 mg daily). Treatment was started after CVC implantation and continued
