Adolescent psychological well-being by identity style.

High school-age adolescents (N=262) in two samples completed a measure of identity style, along with measures of self-esteem, hopelessness, delinquent attitudes, educational expectations, and optimism/efficacy. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the relationship between identity style and the other psychosocial variables. Participants classified as having a diffuse/avoidant orientation had lower self-esteem and higher delinquent attitude scores than those with either an information or normative orientation. At the same time, the diffuse-avoidant style was associated with higher hopeless

Validating a fear-of-falling-related activity avoidance scale in lower limb prosthesis users.

BACKGROUND: Limited available data suggest that fear of falling (FoF) may be common among lower limb prosthesis users (LLPUs) and associated with negative rehabilitation outcomes. The impact of FoF on outcomes may be exacerbated when fear leads to self-imposed declines in activity. There is a need to identify the validity of fear-of-falling-related activity avoidance scales in LLPUs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the convergent, discriminant, and known-group construct validity of the modified Survey of Activities and FoF in the Elderly (mSAFE) for LLPUs. Secondarily, we sought to determine if the mS

Response of the weeping lizard to distress calls: the effect of witnessing predation.

Escaping from predation saves life, but costs energy and time. The "threat-sensitive predator-avoidance" hypothesis proposes that prey may modulate their antipredator responses, and thus the associated costs, in accordance with the magnitude of predation risk. This process requires that prey accurately assess this risk by decoding available information from various sources. For example, distress calls are uttered by prey when a predator traps them and can serve as public information on predation risk. Such is the case for the weeping lizard whose distress calls trigger immobility in conspecifi

Coping strategies and their relationship with quality of life in older adults with type 2 diabetes: a binary logistic regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with type 2 diabetes encounter numerous challenges and stressors, with diabetes-related distress significantly linked to complications and diminished quality of life. Effective management of negative emotions and the adoption of adaptive coping strategies are crucial for improving well-being. Coping strategies consist of three main types: 1)Problem-focused: Direct actions to resolve or alter the stress source. 2)Emotion-focused: Managing emotional responses to stress. 3)Avoidance Strategy: Evading or disengaging from stressful situations. This study aimed to investigat

"Mi voglio bene": a pediatrician-based randomized controlled trial for the prevention of obesity in Italian preschool children.

BACKGROUND: The first years of life are crucial to start preventive interventions that can have an impact on lifestyle and later overweight and obesity. Under the Italian National Health System (INHS), children are cared for by family pediatricians who perform health balances at regular intervals. The Italian Society of Preventive and Social Pediatrics (SIPPS) has designed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of family pediatricians for the prevention of childhood obesity in preschool children. We report the rationale and protocol of such trial, named the "Mi vogli

Potential drug interaction after withdrawal of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND: Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir is effective in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection. It can cause drug‒drug interactions (DDIs), even several days after withdrawal, due to irreversible inhibition of the cytochrome enzyme. METHODS: Hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and treated with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir were retrospectively included according to preset criteria. Personal information, as well as drug use, were obtained from the hospital information system. Potential DDIs were screened and classified according to three databases (FDA fact sheet, University of Liverpoo

Perception of infection: disease-related social cues influence immunity in songbirds.

While avoidance of sick conspecifics is common among animals, little is known about how detecting diseased conspecifics influences an organism's physiological state, despite its implications for disease transmission dynamics. The avian pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) causes obvious visual signs of infection in domestic canaries (Serinus canaria domestica), including lethargy and conjunctivitis, making this system a useful tool for investigating how the perception of cues from sick individuals shapes immunity in healthy individuals. We tested whether disease-related social information ca

Multimodal Contrast-Free Pulmonary Perfusion Imaging by Integrating Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Enhanced Lung Function Assessment.

PURPOSE: Anatomic image-driven lung function imaging methods have been explored for thoracic radiation therapy, but most contrast-free approaches rely on unimodal surrogates. This study aimed to develop a multimodal contrast-free pulmonary perfusion reconstruction framework multimodal contrast-free perfusion (MCF-Q) that integrates computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to leverage complementary anatomic and functional information from routinely acquired CT and noncontrast MRI, improve agreement with single-photon emission CT perfusion (SPECT-Q), and explore its potentia

Nightmare Coping Strategies and Their Association With Big Five Personality Traits.

Although about 5% of the German population report having nightmares at least once a week, nightmares are inadequately diagnosed and treated. We therefore examined how people in the general population cope with nightmares in everyday life. The present study aimed to examine the influence of Big Five personality traits on nightmare-coping behaviour. In an online survey of 411 participants (mostly psychology students), we used established questionnaires and a modified coping scale to assess strategy use and perceived effectiveness. We hypothesized that openness predicts information seeking, extra

Nutrition: prospects for the 1990s.

For many decades there has been adequate information for the elimination of acute dietary deficiency diseases. Scurvy, beri-beri, and pellagra, once serious scourges, are now seen only rarely. The severe forms of protein-energy malnutrition, kwashiorkor and marasmus, have also decreased greatly. Nonetheless, mild to moderate forms of protein-energy deficiency, exacerbated by infection, continue to impair growth and development in a majority of the low-income pre-school age populations of most developing countries. Deficiencies of iron, iodine, and vitamin A are still widespread in developing c

Utility of measuring remoralization in addition to symptoms in efficacy research: a preliminary study.

Remoralization as an outcome measure for psychological treatments was compared with symptom reduction (agoraphobic avoidance and cognitions). Twenty-four patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia received empirically supported treatment and were monitored across multiple time points for 28 weeks. Treatment resulted in reduced symptoms and enhanced remoralization (Cohen's d=1.19-1.45). Slopes of symptoms and remoralization were obtained from latent growth model analyses. The slopes correlated highly (r=- .50 to -.55), which indicates similar patterns of change over time. The slope of remoral

Food hypersensitivity.

Food allergy is one of several causes of adverse reactions to foods. The underlying immunologic mechanism varies from one manifestation to another, hence no current single laboratory test can be expected to be positive in every case. The diagnosis could be suggested by information gathered from the medical history or screening procedures, such as trials of elimination diets, the food/symptom diary, skin testing, and in vitro-specific IgE antibody measurement. All foods suspected by any of the aforementioned methods should be subjected to verification by appropriate elimination-challenge testin
