OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the clinicoradiographic features of lower cranial nerve sheath tumors and to outline surgical approaches that allow the safe and complete resection of these lesions.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with lower cranial nerve sheath tumors of the infratemporal fossa were surgically treated between 7/88 and 10/99. A retrospective chart analysis provided details pertaining to clinical manifestations, radiographic assessment, intraoperative findings, tumor histology, and postoperative results.
RESULTS: The most common presenting symptoms were neck pre…

Four cases of trigeminal schwannoma with different clinical presentations are reported. Two patients had root-type tumors and two ganglion-type tumors. Computed tomography demonstrated the mass in each case, but extension of the tumor into Meckel's cave, displaced but uninvolved seventh and eighth cranial nerves, extension of the tumor into the orbit or into the infratemporal fossa, and other anatomical details were far more clearly shown by magnetic resonance imaging, which provided confirmation of the mass lesions in the base of the brain and within the posterior fossa.

Blastomycosis is usually considered a pulmonary or cutaneous disease. A patient with blastomycosis of the infratemporal fossa temporal bone and sinuses without pulmonary disease is presented. Extensive skull base involvement required surgical debridement for relief of pain, and long-term systemic antifungal therapy. The literature is reviewed and discussed.

The removal of impacted maxillary third molars is one of the most common procedures performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery units with low rates of complications and morbidity. A few cases of accidental displacement of third molars into adjacent anatomical spaces, such as the infratemporal fossa, the pterygomandibular space, the maxillary sinus, buccal space, or the lateral pharyngeal space, during surgical interventions have been reported. In this paper, a case of a maxillary third molar accidentally displaced into the pterygopalatine fossa is presented, and the removal of the tooth via i…

Our propose is to present a case of peripheral ameloblastoma revealed by a glue-ear. This lesion is rare: thirty-one peripheral ameloblastoma have been reported whereas this case seems to be the first case described in the infratemporal fossa. Microscopic examination is necessary for the diagnosis. The resection was realized through the soft palate.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia of the bone is a disease caused by a somatic GNAS mutation that affects craniofacial bones and can have a mass effect on different neurovascular structures. The authors present the first case of primary jugular foramen fibrous dysplasia with occlusion of the transverse and sigmoid sinuses.
OBJECTIVE: A 33-year-old man presented with a history of dizziness and occasional dysphagia over the past year. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a uniform enhanced mass in the left jugular foramen, with complete blockage of the adjacent transverse and sigmoid sinuses. The comp

This article presents our experience with the various surgical approaches for angiofibroma and establishes the Denker procedure as an effect … fective for angiofibromas confined to the nasal cavity and nasopharynx with small extensions in the infratemporal fossa. On the other hand, large tumor extension in the infratemporal fossa can be effectively approached in combination with a midfacial degloving technique.

Burkitt Lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive B-type non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It rarely develops at the level of the sinonasal cavities, especially in young children. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with a 2-month history of nasal obstruction, snoring, and epistaxis followed by a recent dyspnea. Examination revealed a protruding tissue mass in the left nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan showed a homogenous soft-tissue mass in the left nasal cavity extending toward the ipsilateral orbit, infratemporal fossa, nasopharynx, as well as the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Magnet…

Three neonates had to be intubated in the delivery room. Imaging showed invasion of the infratemporal fossa in 3 of the 4 cases. Surgical resection via various approaches to the infratemporal fossa was complete in every case. Adjuvant chemotherapy was administered in one case.
CONCLUSION: Surgery for these mostly benign tumours is very challenging and re …

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ADCC) is a malignant tumor of salivary gland origin. ADCC of sinonasal tract is rare. We present a rare and unresectable case of sinonasal ADCC with intracranial extension in an 83-year-old man with the chief complaint of nasal congestion. Invasion to the maxillary sinus, nasopharynx, anterior cranial fossa, sella turcica and extension to cavernous sinus, dura mater and infratemporal fossa were evident on MRI and CT scan. The patient was treated only by palliative radiotherapy, but unfortunately, he died 3 months after the initial diagnosis.

Meningiomas usually arise from arachnoid cap cells and present as intracranial, dural-based lesions. Extracranial extension into the temporalis muscle, infratemporal fossa, orbit, and skull base foramina is uncommon and can mimic primary soft-tissue or peripheral nerve sheath tumors. We report a 54-year-old female who presented with a slowly progressive right-sided facial and temporal swelling over two years, associated with intermittent pain and mild proptosis but no focal neurological deficit. Computed tomography demonstrated a small extra-axial minimally enhancing right anterior temporal le…

The Birmingham Mummy is of a warrior, 25-35 years of age, from the Graeco-Roman period. He was struck from the front by an arrow, which penetrated the soft tissues of the neck to some depth and lodged in the right infratemporal fossa. It is suggested that the wound became infected and that muscle spasm induced the torticollis which was not fully corrected on mummification.

Lipoblastomas arising within the parotid gland and extending into the infratemporal fossa are very rare. They are common in children <3 years of age. Access to the tumour requires careful planning and interpretation of imaging studies. Lipoblastomas tend to recur. Meticulous dissection of the tumour is needed to prevent recurrence. By adopting the appropriate approach, complete removal is possible with minimal morbidity.

A 19-year-old male presented with complaint of a bluish mass in the hard palate since 3 months. The patient had a history of trauma 8 years back in the left zygomatic area with a pen. It was lodged in the wound and removed at that time. Computed tomography scan was revealed a linear heterogenous dense structure extending from left infratemporal fossa to oral cavity, traversing through left maxillary sinus, with bone defect seen in lateral and medial wall of maxilla, and in the hard palate, most likely a neglected foreign body. The foreign body was removed by navigation-assisted endoscopic surg…
