Reviewing the female accessory glands of insects: Where they come from, what they do, and where they are going.

Female accessory glands (AGs) are structures associated with the reproductive system of many arthropods. In insects, the glands are mostly related to oviposition by secreting egg coatings and adhesives. Nevertheless, the AGs are versatile concerning their function, and show a high diversity of chemical compounds. Here we aim to review the AGs in insects, highlighting their distribution among the orders, origins, location, chemical nature of the secretions, development, endocrine control, and morphological features. We also propose dividing the glands into epidermal and mesodermal, according to

Evaluation of Atriplex lines for selenium accumulation, salt tolerance and suitability for a key agricultural insect pest.

Thirty Atriplex lines were examined for potential habitat improvement and phytoremediation of selenium (Se) contaminated sites. Studies were conducted to determine the biomass production, Se accumulation, and resistance of each line to the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, an agriculturally important insect. Plants were tested using three salinity treatments: (1) control, no Se; (2) NaCl and CaCl2 salts and 1 mg l(-1) Se (12.7 microM) added as sodium selenate; and (3) iso-osmotic to treatment 2 containing high concentrations of sulfate and I mg l(-1) Se added as sodium selenate. Design, Synthesis, Antifeedant Activity, and Mechanistic Research of Aconitine Derivatives.

For decades, natural product-derived insect repellents have been a major focus of research. Aconitine, a diterpene alkaloid isolated from Aconitum plants, exhibits not only significant antifeedant activity but also potent toxicological effects against certain insects. In this study, 48 novel aconitine derivatives were synthesized via esterification of the C3-hydroxyl group. Among them, compound A4 demonstrated optimum antifeedant activity with an AFC50 value of 4.91 µg/cm2, surpassing that of the parent compound aconitine (AFC50 = 11.65 µg/cm2) and the positive control Azadirachtin (AFC50 = 5.

Barrier or breach? Assessing swine housing features for mosquito threats.

Effective mosquito control is critical in swine production to reduce disease transmission and prevent mechanical damage. However, current biosecurity measures on swine premises primarily target microbial pathogens, often overlooking the importance of excluding insects, particularly mosquitoes. While vector-borne disease transmission is the primary concern, mosquito infestations also contribute to mechanical damage, leading to secondary infections, stress-related production losses, and compromised animal welfare. Mitigation efforts aimed at mosquitoes can also have broader benefits by reducing

Ecology of vector mosquitoes in Sri Lanka--suggestions for future mosquito control in rice ecosystems.

Mosquito-borne diseases are a major public health threat in Asia. To explore effective mosquito control strategies in rice ecosystems from the ecological point of view, we carried out ecological analyses of vector mosquitoes in Sri Lanka. During the 18-month study period, 14 Anopheles, 11 Culex, 5 Aedes, 2 Mansonia, and 1 Armigeres species were collected, most of which are disease vectors for malaria, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis, or dengue in Sri Lanka and elsewhere in Asia. The density and occurrence of Anopheles and Culex species were the highest in seepage pools and paddy fields, wher

Expression of defensin, cecropin, and transferrin in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) infected with Wuchereria bancrofti (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), and the abnormal development of nematodes in the mosquito.

The temporal expression of defensin, cecropin and transferrin was assessed in Aedes aegypti naturally refractory to Wuchereria bancrofti upon infection with this worm, in parallel to analysis of filarial development in the insect. Compared to controls, transcription of defensin and cecropin was higher in infected mosquitoes as soon as 2h post infection and peaked before 48h. Transferrin transcription was higher in infected mosquitoes at 24h, and at 48h was almost leveled to controls. At 72h and 7 days post infection, levels of all transcripts in infected insects decreased gradually and were si

Isolation and Identification of Entomopathogenic Fungus GC23620 and Its Virulence and Control Efficacy Against Gynaephora qinghaiensis Larvae.

In June 2023, a larva of grassland caterpillar Gynaephora qinghaiensis naturally infected by an entomopathogenic fungus was collected from an alpine rangeland in Gangcha County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. After laboratory isolation and cultivation, the pathogen was identified as Beauveria bassiana (designated as GC23620) based on morphological characteristics and ITS-rDNA sequence similarity analysis. The larvicidal efficacy of B. bassiana GC23620 against fourth-instar larvae of G. qinghaiensis were assessed using two inoculation methods in laboratory conditions. T

Impact of disinfectants on the intestinal bacterial symbionts and immunity of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.).

The insect egg surface can serve as a vehicle for vertical symbiont transmission from the maternal parent to its offspring. Hypochlorite and formaldehyde are two common disinfectants used for insect egg surface sterilization. Here, we explored the intestinal microecology and immune response profile of the silkworm Bombyx mori strain Dazao after disinfectant exposure by using high-throughput sequencing technology and real-time PCR analysis. After egg surface sterilization, no significant difference (P > 0.05) in overall body weight was observed among the control, sodium hypochlorite, and formal

Growth and Maintenance of Wolbachia in Insect Cell Lines.

The obligate intracellular microbe, Wolbachia pipientis (Rickettsiales; Anaplasmataceae), is a Gram-negative member of the alpha proteobacteria that infects arthropods and filarial worms. Although closely related to the genera Anaplasma and Ehrlichia, which include pathogens of humans, Wolbachia is uniquely associated with invertebrate hosts in the clade Ecdysozoa. Originally described in Culex pipiens mosquitoes, Wolbachia is currently represented by 17 supergroups and is believed to occur in half of all insect species. In mosquitoes, Wolbachia acts as a gene drive agent, with the potential t

Trans-complementation of polyhedrin by a stably transformed Sf9 insect cell line allows occ- baculovirus occlusion and larval per os infectivity.

Oral infection of insect larvae with baculovirus is an advantageous methodology for producing high levels of recombinant proteins and for achieving plague control. However, many recombinant baculoviruses express a foreign protein in lieu of the polyhedrin and hence do not form occlusion bodies (occ-), resulting in extremely reduced per os infectivity in larvae. To overcome this limitation, stably transformed insect cell lines expressing polyhedrin capable of occluding occ- recombinant baculovirus by trans-complementation were developed to obtain oral inoculum for insect larvae infection. First

The role of insect-brain-inspired technology in drone warfare.

For many years, the potential for insect-like robots to be deployed in a military context has been explored in fiction, but also supported by research funding from defence agencies around the world. Recent conflicts have seen a rapid increase in the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones); but is this at all related to new insights in insect science? In fact, the key advances behind this expansion are largely the result of hardware improvements, communication infrastructure and mainstream engineering solutions, combining to substantially lower the cost and increase the reliabil

Sulfonyl-acetohydrazide derivatives as juvenile hormone mimics to be insect growth regulators.

The need for targeted pest control strategies has led to the development of juvenile hormone (JH) mimics that selectively disrupt the life cycles of harmful insect species. Present study focuses on the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of sulfonyl-acetohydrazide derivatives (H1-H8) as novel JH mimics on two different insect species, with an emphasis on their insect-specific action. The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti and cabbage leaf borer, Spodoptera litura, were selected for this investigation. Our results indicate that while these compounds exhibit negligible effects on the de

Adult blackfly (Simulium damnosum s.l.) collection methods: overview and research needs.

BACKGROUND: River blindness, caused by Onchocerca volvulus and transmitted by Simulium damnosum s.l., requires robust and ethical vector surveillance for its elimination. The human landing catch (HLC) remains the gold standard for collecting blackflies but presents ethical and operational challenges. This review evaluates alternative blackfly collection methods in relation to their effectiveness, consistency, operational feasibility and alignment with a target product profile (TPP) framework for field programmatic use. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Me

An immune system for the city: A cluster-randomized trial of a new paradigm for surveillance and control of disease vectors.

Vector-borne pathogens continue to emerge, kill and harm humans with unrelenting regularity. Conventional strategies for controlling insect vectors grew out of the military; communication is hierarchical, responses unilateral, and regulation predetermined. We developed an alternative approach, modeled after the adaptive immune system, and compared the approaches through a cluster-randomized trial in the context of an ongoing urban Chagas disease vector control campaign in Arequipa, Peru. Clusters consisted of pre-defined geographic jurisdictions of health facilities, and averaged 2,271 househo

Shrubs and trees as natural insect protection for grazing animals in Switzerland and the alpine region: A systematic review of in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials.

Insect infestation in grazing animals is an increasing problem due to factors such as global warming and increasing resistance to insecticides, which have a direct impact on animal health and welfare. According to reports from farmers, observations in zoopharmacognosy and the ingredients of commercial insecticides, various indigenous trees and shrubs with an insecticidal or repellent effect grow or can be planted on pastures. The aim of our systematic review (designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement) was to identify perenni

Blending studies with selected waterbuck odor constituents or analogues in the development of a potent repellent blend against savannah tsetse.

Previous comparison of the body odors of tsetse-refractory waterbuck and those of tsetse-attractive ox and buffalo showed that a blend of 15 EAG-active compounds specific to waterbuck, including C5-C10 straight chain carboxylic acid homologues, methyl ketones (C8-C12 straight chain homologues and geranyl acetone), phenols (guaiacol and carvacrol) and δ-octalactone, was repellent to tsetse. A blend of four components selected from each class of compounds (δ-octalactone, pentanoic acid, guaiacol, and geranylacetone) showed repellence that is comparable to that of the 15 components blend and can

Impact of Glossina pallidipes salivary gland hypertrophy virus (GpSGHV) on a heterologous tsetse fly host, Glossina fuscipes fuscipes.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are the vectors of African trypanosomosis, the causal agent of sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in animals. Glossina fuscipes fuscipes is one of the most important tsetse vectors of sleeping sickness, particularly in Central Africa. Due to the development of resistance of the trypanosomes to the commonly used trypanocidal drugs and the lack of effective vaccines, vector control approaches remain the most effective strategies for sustainable management of those diseases. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an effective, environment-friendl

Costs of using "tiny targets" to control Glossina fuscipes fuscipes, a vector of gambiense sleeping sickness in Arua District of Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the relative effectiveness of tsetse control methods, their costs need to be analysed alongside their impact on tsetse populations. Very little has been published on the costs of methods specifically targeting human African trypanosomiasis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In northern Uganda, a 250 km2 field trial was undertaken using small (0.5 X 0.25 m) insecticide-treated targets ("tiny targets"). Detailed cost recording accompanied every phase of the work. Costs were calculated for this operation as if managed by the Ugandan vector control services: removing purel

Cost and effectiveness of community-wide integrated pest management for German cockroach, cockroach allergen, and insecticide use reduction in low-income housing.

Many low-income housing units in the United States continue to have chronic German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), infestations and high prevalence of cockroach allergens despite the availability of highly effective cockroach control products. Several studies have demonstrated the greater effectiveness of integrated pest management (IPM) compared with routine chemical interventions in apartment buildings and the benefit of cockroach allergen reduction using IPM. Yet, there has been little information on the cost and benefit of community-wide cockroach IPM, which is critical for voluntary
