Development and evaluation of LIPODEET, a new long-acting formulation of N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) for the prevention of schistosomiasis.

N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) is a common and fairly safe active ingredient in many insect repellents. Our recent studies showed that when applied to the skin, DEET has a potent anti-parasitic effect against Schistosoma mansoni. However, the beneficial effects of DEET lasted only for a few minutes, presumably due to its rapid absorption through the skin. In this study, we evaluated different carrier formulations that prolong the activity of DEET in the skin. Among the various formulations analyzed, DEET incorporated into liposomes (LIPODEET) appeared to prolong the activity of DEET for more …

Shifting the paradigm in Dirofilaria immitis prevention: blocking transmission from mosquitoes to dogs using repellents/insecticides and macrocyclic lactone prevention as part of a multimodal approach.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the influence of a topical ectoparasiticide (dinotefuran-permethrin-pyriproxyfen, DPP, Vectra® 3D, Ceva Animal Health) combined with a macrocyclic lactone (milbemycin oxime, MBO, Interceptor®, Virbac) on transmission of heartworm L3 from mosquitoes to dogs and subsequent development of worms in treated dogs exposed to infected mosquitoes. METHODS: Thirty-two beagle dogs were allocated to four groups of eight: Group 1, untreated controls; Group 2, treated topically with DPP on Day 0; Group 3, treated orally with MBO on Day 51; and Group 4, treated with DPP on Da

Protecting cows in small holder farms in East Africa from tsetse flies by mimicking the odor profile of a non-host bovid.

BACKGROUND: For the first time, differential attraction of pathogen vectors to vertebrate animals is investigated for novel repellents which when applied to preferred host animals turn them into non-hosts thereby providing a new paradigm for innovative vector control. For effectively controlling tsetse flies (Glossina spp.), vectors of African trypanosomosis, causing nagana, repellents more powerful than plant derived, from a non-host animal the waterbuck, Kobus ellipsiprymnus defassa, have recently been identified. Here we investigate these repellents in the field to protect cattle from nagan

OBP-Mediated Molecular Mechanism Underlying the Olfactory Repellent Effect of Mosla chinensis Essential Oil Against Culex quinquefasciatus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Mosquitoes, including Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti, are important vectors of dengue fever, Zika virus, West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus, etc. Biological control has always been urgent in mosquito prevention due to resistance developing to synthetic insecticides and environmental toxicity by insecticides. METHODS: The leaf essential oil of Mosla. chinensis was isolated, and major components were identified via GC-MS, followed by olfactory behavior assays to evaluate its repellent activity against C. quinquefascia

Human behavior determinants of exposure to Anopheles vectors of malaria in Sumba, Indonesia.

Malaria vector control interventions in Sumba, Indonesia, have not been able to eliminate malaria. Human drivers of exposure to Anopheles bites were investigated as part of a larger clinical trial evaluating the impact of a spatial repellent product on malaria incidence. Human behavioral observations (HBOs) evaluating temporal and spatial presence, sleeping behaviors, and insecticide treated net (ITN) use, were collected parallel to entomological collections-indoor and outdoor human landing catches (HLCs), and house hold surveys. Data demonstrates that mosquito access to humans, enabled by str

Repellence of the red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda from grafted apple trees by impregnation of rubber budding strips with essential oils.

The red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda (Rübs.) is a pest insect of apple trees when rootstocks are grafted with scion buds by 'shield budding'. The female midges are attracted to the wounds of the grafted buds where they lay their eggs. The larvae feed on the cambium and destroy the buds completely or partially, leading to bad union of the buds with the rootstocks. Budding strips are used very often by growers to bind scion buds to rootstocks. These strips cannot prevent midges from reaching the damaged tissue. Chemical treatments applied to the grafts and other types of strip do not provide

Chemical profiling and bioactivities of essential oils from Thymus capitatus and Origanum compactum against Tribolium castaneum.

The use of essential oils has emerged as an ecofriendly solution for controlling different pests, particularly insects of stored products. Essential oils (EOs) from Thymus capitatus (TC) and Origanum compactum (OC) have received less attention for these bioactivities. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the repellent, antifeedant and contact toxicity of their EOs against a major stored product pest Tribolium castaneum. Besides, GC-MS was also carried out to determine the compounds responsible for the observed bioactivities. Regarding contact toxicity, LC50 values were 0.58 and 0.35 μL/cm2 for

Forced egg retention and oviposition behavior of malaria, dengue and filariasis vectors to a topical repellent diethyl-phenylacetamide.

Egg retention and oviposition behavior of four species of mosquito vectors viz., Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus to a topical insect repellent diethyl-phenylacetamide (DEPA) at 0.1-1000 mg/L was investigated under laboratory conditions. Based on oviposition activity indices, DEPA demonstrated concentration dependent oviposition deterrent effect to A. stephensi (-0.18 to -0.97), A. aegypti (-0.18 to -0.91) and A. albopictus (-0.50 to -0.98) females. In contrast, positive oviposition response by C. quinquefasciatus (+0.39 and +0.70) was observed r

Rue the herb: Ruta graveolens--associated phytophototoxicity.

We describe an unusual case of phytophototoxicity induced by an herbal plant, Ruta graveolens, from the Rutaceae family. This common herb, also called rue, can be found throughout rural settings in the United States. When psoralens from rue come in contact with human skin that is subsequently exposed to ultraviolet A light, an impressive photoirritant reaction can occur. This report both clarifies the distinguishing features of photoirritant reactions versus photoallergic reactions and reviews the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of phytophotodermatitis. R. graveolens can be associate

Functional Characterization of an Odorant Receptor in the Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, Tuned to 2-Dodecanone.

Insect olfactory systems detect environmental volatiles to guide key behaviors. The specific binding of odorants to olfactory neurons mediated by odorant receptors (ORs) constitutes the fundamental basis of olfaction. The brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) is a major global rice pest; however, there have been few studies on the function of BPH NlugORs. Here, we conducted transcriptome sequencing of adult and nymph antennae with differential expression analysis and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) validation to screen candidate OR genes. We functionally characterized three NlugORs (Nl

Mite infestations.

Mite infestations are important in dermatology because these may cause dermatologic diseases that range from papulosquamous eruptions to urticarial lesions to bullous eruptions and may spread infectious diseases. These clinical manifestations are important to recognize because mite-associated diseases may have systemic complications and may be confused with other dermatologic conditions. In treating mite infestations, oral antibiotics may be necessary. Prevention of infestation may be accomplished by pre-treating clothing with permethrin, using insect repellent N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide on cl

Egg volatiles of oak silkworm mediate defense against parasitoid wasps.

Most insects protect their eggs from natural enemies via physical coverings, yet defensive mechanisms of exposed eggs (i.e., those without such coverings), particularly those lacking toxins, remain largely unexplored. The oak silkworm (Antheraea pernyi) lays such exposed eggs, yet these eggs exhibit less parasitism than manually extracted washed eggs (MUWE) under laboratory conditions, raising the question of whether this defense operates in nature and how it functions. Here, field experiments showed that naturally laid unwashed eggs had significantly lower parasitism by three parasitoid speci

Trace organic chemical pollutants from the lake waters of San Pablo City, Philippines by targeted and non-targeted analysis.

More than half of the freshwater lakes in the Philippines are small with surface areas of <2 km2. The dynamics in these lakes are different from those in the bigger lakes. This study was conducted to determine the organic pollutants and their sources in three of the seven lakes of San Pablo City in Laguna, Philippines: lakes Palakpakin, Sampaloc, and Pandin. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were used in the targeted and non-targeted analysis of the lake water samples. The three lakes are all volcanic crater lakes but a

Efficacy of Active Ingredients From the EPA 25(B) List in Reducing Attraction of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) to Humans.

Mosquitoes of the Aedes genus are vectors for dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Mosquito repellents are an effective way to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. In the early 90s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a list of active ingredients that pose minimum risk to human health that can be used as pesticides or repellents without passing the EPA registration process. The present study examined the efficacy of 21 of the active ingredients listed by the EPA 25 (B) exempt list and five commercially available sprays th

Repellence of essential oils and selected compounds against ticks-A systematic review.

Ticks act as vectors of a wide range of infectious agents, far encompassing any other group of bloodsucking arthropods worldwide. The prevention of tick-borne diseases is strictly linked to the successful management of tick vector populations. The employ of repellents can represent a worth solution to avoid tick bites. It is widely adopted to protect travellers and pets exposed to ticks during limited periods of the year. The use of natural products as active ingredients in eco-friendly repellent formulations is currently a prominent research area, due to the wide diversity and high effectiven

Compound valence is conserved in binary odor mixtures in Drosophila melanogaster.

Most naturally occurring olfactory signals do not consist of monomolecular odorants but, rather, are mixtures whose composition and concentration ratios vary. While there is ample evidence for the relevance of complex odor blends in ecological interactions and for interactions of chemicals in both peripheral and central neuronal processing, a fine-scale analysis of rules governing the innate behavioral responses of Drosophila melanogaster towards odor mixtures is lacking. In this study we examine whether the innate valence of odors is conserved in binary odor mixtures. We show that binary mixt

Recent advances in vector control in filariasis.

Three factors are involved when vector control is incorporated into an integrated control program for filariasis: (1) the vector species or species complex of each filarial worm; (2) type of control measures employed; (3) pesticide application. Recent advances in vector control in filariasis include the use of bed nets, environmental manipulation, insecticides and biological control. Three promising advances in vectrol control are the use of pathogenic bacteria such as Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 and B. sphaericus, juvenile hormone mimics or insect growth regulator (IGR) and predatory crustace
