Use of insecticides to control screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in cattle.

Some insecticides to control and prevent screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in calves and adult cattle were tested in field trials on cattle in Sabah, East Malaysia. Ivermectin injected subcutaneously in newborn calves at 200 mu/kg provided 10 days protection from screw-worm fly strike, which allowed navels to dry. Ivermectin, 1% dichlofenthion plus gentian violet and 3% lindane plus pine oil smear were all effective in preventing re-strike of treated wounds in adult cattle. A single subcutaneous injection of ivermectin at 200 mu/kg was effective, whereas it was necessary to re-apply …

Observations on the accidental poisoning of birds by organophosphate insecticides and other toxic substances.

Details of cases involving the inadvertent exposure of birds to eight toxic substances are recorded. The organophosphate insecticides dichlorvos, diazinon and malathion produced respiratory symptoms which in the former and latter cases were initially thought to be caused by infectious disease. Birds which consumed feed containing fenitrothion showed nervous signs before death. On three separate occasions feral starlings (Sternus vulgaris) were found dead and their gizzard contents contained mevinphos. The rodenticide warfarin was associated with petechial haemorrhages in the skeletal muscles a…

Impact of dual active ingredients long-lasting insecticidal nets on the genetic structure of insecticide resistant populations of Anopheles gambiae in Southern Benin.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance amongst vector populations is a major challenge, exacerbated by the continued use of the same active ingredients. The present study assessed the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) bi-treated with chlorfenapyr-alphacypermethrin (PY-CFP LLIN) or pyriproxyfen-alphacypermethrin (PY-PPF LLIN) on the genetic structure of resistant populations of Anopheles gambiae in 60 clusters divided into three arms from three districts in southern Benin. METHODS: The study was conducted between September 2019 and October 2021 in 123 villages grouped in 60 clusters

A Globally Distributed Insecticide Resistance Allele Confers a Fitness Cost in the Absence of Insecticide in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), the Yellow Fever Mosquito.

The cosmopolitan mosquito Aedes aegypti is a vector of harmful arboviruses. Pyrethroid insecticides are used to reduce adult populations and prevent the spread of disease. Pyrethroids target the insect voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC). Collectively, mutations in Vgsc that confer resistance are referred to as knock-down resistance or kdr. There are numerous kdr mutations found in A. aegypti Vgsc, and there is co-occurrence of some mutations. Full-length cDNA sequences have identified nine known kdr (e.g., 1534C) alleles. The 1534C allele is among the most common kdr alleles, but allele frequ…

Chlorfenapyr: irritant effect compared to other insecticides and its intrinsic toxicity in multiple-insecticide-susceptible and -resistant Anopheles stephensi (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: For effective management of vector resistance there is a need for new insecticide molecules with novel modes of act … yr molecule has shown least irritant effect against susceptible and resistant strains among all the insecticides tested allowing more landing time to the vector species on the impregnated surfaces to pick-up lethal dose. CONCLUSION: Chlorfenapyr could be an ideal insecticide for management of multiple-insecticide-resistance including pyrethroids.

Insecticide residues in Australian plague locusts (Chortoicetes terminifera Walker) after ultra-low volume aerial application of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion.

The need for locust control throughout eastern Australia during spring 2010 provided an opportunity to quantify residues of the organophosphorus insecticide fenitrothion on nymphs of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera Walker. Residues were collected across the different physiological states--live, dead, and debilitated (characterized by ease of capture, erratic hopping, and the inability to remain upright)--of locust nymphs observed following exposure to fenitrothion. The time course of residue depletion for 72 h after spraying was quantified, and residue-per-unit dose valu

Susceptibility to common insecticides and detoxifying enzyme activities in Anopheles sundaicus (sensu lato) after cessation of indoor residual spraying of insecticides in the Jaffna Peninsula and its surroundings in northern Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka has been malaria-free since 2013 but re-introduction of malaria transmission by infected overseas travelers is possibl … in the Jaffna Peninsula and it surroundings in northern Sri Lanka after indoor residual spraying of insecticides was terminated in 2013. RESULTS: Species-specific PCR assays identified An. sundaicus (s.l.) in four locations in the Jaffna and adjacent Kilinochchi districts. Bioassays confirmed that An. sundaicus (s.l.) collected in Kilinochchi were completely …

Expanding the weight of evidence for insecticidal protein risk assessment.

Insecticidal proteins expressed in genetically modified (GM) crops represent a sustainable and effective alternative for controlling insect and nematode pests and constitute a significant portion of the GM crop portfolio. Proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are currently the most extensively studied and widely used, particularly those belonging to the Cry class. In addition to Cry proteins, other insecticidal proteins from different classes have been developed. However, for many of these, information on their mode of action (MoA) and host receptors remains limited. Over the past

Impact of insecticide resistance evolution on malaria vector control.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are the staple of malaria vector control. Given their importance, insecticide resistance (IR) is extremely concerning. Understanding how ITNs simultaneously impact the evolution of IR and malaria control is of critical importance, especially with next-generation mixture ITNs (NGM-ITNs) becoming available. METHOD: We developed a mosquito population dynamics and genetics model to explore the simultaneous impact of ITNs on both malaria transmission (measured as vectorial capacity, an entomological measure of transmission) and IR evolution (resistance g

Mitochondrial phylogeography and insecticide resistance of Aedes aegypti in Kenya.

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya. Here, we investigate the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) structure and insecticide resistance of Ae. aegypti populations across Kenya. Using 175 newly sequenced Kenyan COI mtDNA fragments, along with global reference sequences, we assess maternal ancestry and phylogeographic structure. Genetic structure across Kenya was not well explained by isolation-by-distance alone, with several populations deviating from this pattern. Nairobi and Mombasa, separated by >400 km, showed greater maternal genetic

Mapping of access and usage of insecticide-treated nets in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria with children under five years of age and pregnant women possessing the highest risk. Preventive efforts including indoor residual spraying (IRS) and insecticide-treated nets (ITN) have been implemented over the years but issues such as limited funding, low net coverage, and cultural barriers have hindered progress. This study analyses ITN ownership and usage trends across Nigeria to assess local-level variations and differences based on household size. METHODS: This study used data from the Nigeria Demographic and Health

Antiplasmodial and Insecticidal Activities of Third-Generation Ivermectin Hybrids.

Preclinical and/or clinical studies have demonstrated the potential of Ivermectin (IVM) for malaria control. In order to improve its antiplasmodial activity and build on previous knowledge, we have designed a third generation of hybrid molecules in which selected pharmacophores were appended to the IVM macrolide, while retaining one or both sugar moieties at the C-13 position. Moreover, we synthesized IVM hybrids that contain structural features of potent IVM metabolites. The evaluation of the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of these compounds against Plasmodium berghei pre-erythrocytic stage

Whiteflies can excrete insecticide-tainted honeydew on tomatoes.

Whiteflies are important insect pests in a wide variety of agricultural crops that are targeted with large quantities of insecticides on a global scale. Chemical control is the most common strategy to manage whiteflies, however, recent studies had reported that whiteflies and other hemipterans can excrete insecticides through their honeydew, which could have unanticipated, non-target effects. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of imidacloprid in honeydew excreted by whiteflies feeding on tomato plants. Imidacloprid was applied at its labeled rate to soil at the base…
