In this study, we determined the frequency of interferon antibodies in patients with skin diseases treated with low doses of recombinant interferon alpha 2a (1.5 - 18 x 10(6) IU). We assayed serum specimens from 181 patients with malignant melanoma or cutaneous T cell lymphomas (78 patients treated with recombinant interferon alpha 2a and 103 patients in control group) for interferon antibodies before treatment and every 6 months for at least 18 months. Various aspects of the interferon (IFN) system were studied in malignant cells from 37 unselected patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). It was found that leukemic cells from two of 37 patients had a complete loss of alpha- and beta-IFN genes, whereas cells from four of 37 had lost one of the alpha-/beta-IFN alleles. Behçet's disease (BD) and vitiligo are diseases of unknown etiology. Interferon (IFN) alpha therapy is commonly used in Behçet uveitis. Interferon treatment in various diseases have also been observed causing certain autoimmune diseases such as vitiligo because of its immunomodulatory activity. The association between IFN therapy and vitiligo has been reported in the literature. We report a 21-year-old man with BD in whom vitiligo occurred during IFN treatment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of such an association.

PURPOSE: Corticosteroids, the main treatment option in acute attacks of ocular Behcet's disease (BD), are ineffective in preventing recurrent inflammation. Even combined therapy with systemic corticosteroids and azathioprine, cyclosporine, chlorambucil, or cyclophosphamide may be ineffective in controlling the disease in severe cases. Acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection evolves to chronicity in 50-84% cases. This is a report of the alpha interferon-induced acute anosmia in a 37-year old patient with chronic hepatitis C. This exceptionally rare side-effect started in our patient as a smelling problem 2 weeks after the initiation of the therapy, and anosmia is still present 13 months after the discontinuation of the alpha interferon. We presume that neurotoxic mechanism could be responsible for this side-effect.
