Childhood abuse, adult interpersonal abuse, and depression in individuals with extreme obesity.

This study sought to examine (a) a mediational model of childhood abuse, adult interpersonal abuse, and depressive symptoms and (b) the impact of weight-related teasing on rates and correlates of childhood abuse. Gratitude questionnaire: psychometric properties in Portuguese adult samples and evidence of validity.

BACKGROUND: Gratitude has been increasingly studied as a key psychological strength associated with subjective well-being, positive interpersonal relationships, and mental health. The assessment of gratitude through validated instruments is essential for both research and clinical practice. Although the Gratitude Questionnaire 6 items (GQ-6) is widely used in various cultural contexts, there is a need to evaluate its psychometric properties and cultural relevance in Portuguese-speaking populations, particularly among adults. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to examine the psychometric prope…

What Is It Like to Be in Alcohol Addiction Recovery? A Dialectical Phenomenological Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, there is no scientific consensus on the concept of alcohol addiction recovery beyond substance use control. This co … rst group indicated experiential elements of recovery, such as changes in self-relation, changes in interpersonal relations, and changes in time relations, giving new meanings to suffering and alcohol use, and recovery as a continuous process. The second group referred to how the participants interpreted recovery according to their worldviews: as a spiritual experience, …

Healthy and Equitable Interpersonal Relationships, Health Inequalities and Socio-Educational Interventions: A Conceptual Framework for Action.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal relationships undoubtedly have a bidirectional connection with the health of individuals and communities. Relational models based on equity contribute to well-being, while asymmetrical relationships based on hierarchies and differences of power negatively impact mental, physical, and social health. METHODS: A conceptual framework for understanding the determinants of interpersonal relational models was developed. RESULTS: Structural determinants were identified as the combined action of systems of oppression, the socio-historical context that normalizes violence, an…

Love as a lived experience.

In response to commentaries, we refine our Merit-Appreciation (M-A) love model and extend it. The model's revised formulation highlights its flexibility over personal and life circumstances in that (1) the emphasis on partner's Merit versus Appreciation may differ across life phases and individuals' own sense of Merit, (2) the Novelty of a given love relationship enhances the significance partners derive from it; their shared experiences in novel domains may revitalize it, however (3) the weight of an instance of romantic love as a significance source may depend on the availability of other so

Multi-brain neurofeedback: what are we training for?

Multi-brain neurofeedback offers new possibilities for guiding social interaction by capturing and modulating interpersonal neural dynamics in real time. We propose a hierarchical framework where neurofeedback targets shared sensory dynamics (signal), socio-cognitive processes (functional), or social outcomes (system). We highlight key methodological challenges and potential real-world therapeutic and pedagogical applications.

Beyond Representation: Metaphor as a Mechanism for Interpersonal Reconstruction of Embodied Experience.

Human experience is fundamentally embodied, involving the continuous interaction of external perception, bodily awareness, physiological states, and affective responses. However, because subjective experiences are multidimensional and personally situated, communicating their qualitative character presents a fundamental challenge. Existing theories of metaphor have primarily emphasized its role in conceptual representation, reasoning, and meaning construction, whereas less attention has been given to how metaphor enables individuals to make embodied experiences accessible to others. This paper

Stuttering as an act of love.

For us to love each other we must first know each other. We come to know each other through communication, the purpose of which is communion. Traditionally, we think of stuttering as impairing this communion. Stuttering prevents us from sharing ourselves with others by distorting our message and increasing the effort it takes for us to speak. This need not be the case. Our stuttering is as much a part of us as any other attribute. For others to know us deeply, they must also know our stuttering. Likewise, for us to know others, we must know how they react to us - all of us - including our stut

How do people with intellectual disabilities understand friendship? A systematic meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Previous systematic reviews of the relationships of people with intellectual disabilities have included consideration of intimate relationships. In this paper, we report a systematic review of papers describing friendship only. METHOD: A systematic qualitative meta-synthesis of the research exploring experiences of friendship as reported by people with intellectual disabilities. RESULTS: Seven papers met the inclusion criteria for analysis. Three superordinate themes were identified. (1) Reciprocity, 'Someone who helps me, and I help them'. (2) The building blocks of friendships,

Psychosis in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Neglected Clinical Phenomenon.

Psychotic symptoms are a prevalent yet underrecognized feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), with studies estimating their occurrence in up to 60% of patients. Despite their clinical and theoretical relevance, these phenomena are marginalized in contemporary diagnostic frameworks, which emphasize affective instability and interpersonal dysfunction while minimizing impairments in reality testing. We review the historical roots of BPD as a schizophrenia-like condition and examine the phenomenology of hallucinations and delusions in this population. Drawing on psychoanalytic object-re

Impression formation and revision in social anxiety disorder.

Interpersonal relations are markedly impaired in social anxiety. Yet, little is known about the ways social anxiety affects social cognition. We examined impression formation and impression revision among individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 26) and non-anxious individuals (n = 29). Participants read initial descriptions of protagonists depicted as dominant, neutral or submissive and rated them on social rank and affiliation dimensions. Next, participants were presented with behavioral acts that were either congruent, incongruent or irrelevant to the initial descriptions, and re-…
