Ferulic acid lowers body weight and visceral fat accumulation via modulation of enzymatic, hormonal and inflammatory changes in a mouse model of high-fat diet-induced obesity.

Previous studies have reported on the glucose and lipid-lowering effects of ferulic acid (FA) but its anti-obesity potential has not yet been firmly established. This study investigated the possible anti-obesitogenic effects of FA in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 15 weeks. To assess the antiobesity potential of FA, 32 male Swiss mice, weighing 20-25 g (n=6-8 per group) were fed a normal diet (ND) or HFD, treated orally or not with either FA (10 mg/kg) or sibutramine (10 mg/kg) for 15 weeks and at the end of this period, the body weights of animals, visceral fat accumulation, plasma levels

Effect of Adipocyte Secretome in Melanoma Progression and Vasculogenic Mimicry.

Obesity, favored by the modern lifestyle, acquired epidemic proportions nowadays. Obesity has been associated with various major causes of death and morbidity including malignant neoplasms. This increased prevalence has been accompanied by a worldwide increase in cutaneous melanoma incidence rates during the last decades. Obesity involvement in melanoma aetiology has been recognized, but the implicated mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, we address this relationship and investigate the influence of adipocytes secretome on B16-F10 and MeWo melanoma cell lines. Using the 3T3-L1 adip

Adipose tissue at the crossroads in the development of the metabolic syndrome, inflammation and atherosclerosis.

The authors analyze insulin resistance, the metabolic syndrome and endothelial dysfunction as consequence of a common antecedent, a low grade inflammation, indicating that in obesity there is a chronically activated inflammatory state of the adipose tissue. Furthermore, the inflammatory signaling is discussed according to the adipose tissue depot, visceral or subcutaneous.

The efficacy of carbohydrate-restricted diets on reducing visceral and liver fat in individuals with overweight and obesity: a systematic review and pairwise and network meta-analyses.

The current systematic review aimed to investigate the efficacy of carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) for improving fat distribution in individuals with overweight or obesity. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to April 2025. Randomized trials investigating the effects of any mode of CRD, including moderate (MCD), low (LCD), or very low (VLCD) carbohydrate diets, as compared with a control group (CON) or other dietary interventions such as caloric restriction (CR), low-fat diets (LFD), or intermittent fasting (IF), were included. Adoptive Cell Transfer of Regulatory T Cells Exacerbates Hepatic Steatosis in High-Fat High-Fructose Diet-Fed Mice.

Background and Aims: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a multisystem condition, involving the liver, adipose tissue, and immune system. Regulatory T (Treg) cells are a subset of T cells that exert an immune-controlling effect. Previously, a reduction of Treg cells in the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was shown to be associated with a more severe degree of liver disease. We aimed to correct this immune disruption through adoptive cell transfer (ACT) of Treg cells. Methods: Male 8-week-old C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat high-fructose diet (HFHFD) for 20 weeks. Treg cells were isolated f

Imaging techniques for measuring adipose-tissue distribution in the abdomen: a comparison between computed tomography and 1.5-tesla magnetic resonance spin-echo imaging.

Eight subjects were examined both by abdominal X-ray computed transverse axial tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (SE) (TR/TE, 200 ms/15 ms); another eight volunteers were subjected to three MRI scans to test the reliability of repeated measures. Correlations between fat area measures obtained by CT and by MRI for subcutaneous fat, total fat, and visceral vs. subcutaneous-fat ratio were highly significant (r = 0.93, 0.91, and 0.94, respectively; p < 0.01), and the standard errors of estimation were 9.99, 23.87, and 0.0047. The average errors of the method for different fat ar

Sex-specific association of visceral and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue with gastroesophageal reflux disease: a large-scale perspective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have revealed an association between abdominal obesity and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) but body size differences across genders were not fully considered. We aimed to investigate the sex-specific associations of abdominal adipose with incident GERD. METHODS: Participants from the UK Biobank with complete data on magnetic resonance imaging-dervied visceral adipose tissue (VAT), abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT), and without GERD at the time of image assessment were included (N = 35,009; 52.11% female). Associations of VAT, ASAT, and several ot

The association between ultrasound-estimated visceral fat deposition and uterine fibroids: an observational study.

Uterine fibroids are the most common neoplasm of the genital tract in reproductive women. Obesity holds a role as risk factor for uterine fibroids, through hormonal and inflammatory mechanisms. Visceral fat is a hormonally active tissue, so an increase in visceral fat may be considered as a risk factor, through the increased production of inflammatory mediators. The aim of the study was, therefore, to evaluate the association between the presence of uterine fibroids and fat tissue distribution, and to assess the efficacy of both anthropometric and instrumental indicators, in particular the son

A possible link between increased metabolic activity of fat tissue and aortic wall inflammation in subjects with COPD. A retrospective 18F-FDG-PET/CT pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Fat tissue, and particularly visceral fat, is known to play a role in low grade systemic inflammation in COPD, and is likely to contribute to the excess cardiovascular comorbidity in COPD. Therefore, we aimed to study (18)FDG-PET-assessed inflammation of the aorta and the (visceral) fat, and evaluate its interrelations and differences in subjects with and without COPD. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 42 patients (71% male, 48% current smokers, mean age 66.6 ± 8.3 years, mean BMI 25.1 ± 4.3 kg/m(2)), who underwent (18)F-FDG-PET/CT for suspected early stage bronchus carcinoma

Lipid emboli in a Vietnamese potbellied pig (Sus scrofa).

A 2-year-old, spayed female Vietnamese potbellied pig (Sus scrofa) was evaluated due to polyuria, polydipsia, lethargy, and hyporexia. The pig was obese, and a large abdominal mass was palpated. Additional findings included hypercalcemia, hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and an inflammatory leukogram. At surgery, the abdominal mass was biopsied and found to be bilaterally symmetric adipose tissue with mineralization and granulomatous steatitis. An additional surgery was performed to collect additional diagnostic samples, but the pig died while recovering from anesthesia. A cosmetic necropsy was perf

A Case Report of Falciform Ligament Appendagitis.

Falciform ligament appendagitis is an extremely rare form of intra-abdominal focal fat infarction. It usually presents with vigorous abdominal pain and mimics other more common acute abdominal pain-associated diseases. Better recognition of this entity avoids misdiagnoses and unnecessary surgical treatment. We present the case of a 73-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department for abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. She had a fever and a diffuse tender abdomen with upper right quadrant pain. Laboratory investigation showed leukocytosis and high C-reactive protein. CT revealed a hete

Increased myocardial uptake of dietary fatty acids linked to cardiac dysfunction in glucose-intolerant humans.

Impaired cardiac systolic and diastolic function has been observed in preclinical models and in subjects with type 2 diabetes. Using a recently validated positron emission tomography (PET) imaging method with 14(R,S)-[(¹⁸F]-fluoro-6-thia-heptadecanoic acid to quantify organ-specific dietary fatty acid partitioning, we demonstrate in this study that overweight and obese subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT⁺) display significant increase in fractional myocardial dietary fatty acid uptake over the first 6 h postprandial compared with control individuals (IGT⁻). Measured by [¹¹C]acetate w

Association of smoking with abdominal adipose deposition and muscle composition in Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) participants at mid-life: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Smokers have lower risk of obesity, which some consider a "beneficial" side effect of smoking. However, some studies suggest that smoking is simultaneously associated with higher central adiposity and, more specifically, ectopic adipose deposition. Little is known about the association of smoking with intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), an ectopic adipose depot associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and a key determinant of muscle quality and function. We tested the hypothesis that smokers have higher abdominal IMAT and lower lean muscle quality than never smokers. MET

Dyslipidemia is associated with abdominal fat depots but not with bone mineral density and muscle fat infiltration.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia (DLP) is linked to adverse abdominal fat distribution; however, its relationship with bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle fat infiltration (MFI) remains unclear. This study aimed to assess, using quantitative computed tomography (QCT), whether DLP is associated with abdominal fat depots, and if it independently correlates with BMD or MFI. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included participants aged ≥ 40 years from a health check-up cohort. Demographic data and fasting blood lipid measurements were collected for analysis.
