BACKGROUND: An intrauterine device (IUD) is an effective reversible form of contraception. We determined the efficacy and safety of immediate postplacental IUD insertion during cesarean section.
STUDY DESIGN: Two hundred forty-five women with term pregnancies delivering by cesarean section between September 2006 and December 2007 were included in the study. A copper IUD (TCu 380A) was inserted using a ring forceps within 10 min of removing the placenta. The participants were examined before hospital discharge and at 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months postpartum.
RESULTS: None of the patients we

Menstrual problems are common in adolescence. Management can be very problematic in girls with disability or medical disorders, as their condition and other medications may mean they are less likely to achieve satisfactory control with standard medical treatments. Those with disability tend to tolerate menses poorly. We report experience with the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG IUS) for treatment of menstrual problems in adolescents with a range of medical problems or with severe learning disability. It provided of significant therapeutic benefit for 12 of 14 participants, with the maj

Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a common birth control method. It is safe but can be associated with serious complications including migration into the peritoneal cavity and penetration into other intra-abdominal and pelvic viscera; most commonly the rectosigmoid colon. Different retrieval methods including endoscopy, laparoscopy or open abdominal surgery have been described. We report the case of 38-year-old woman who became pregnant shortly after insertion of the IUCD 6 years prior to presentation. She delivered vaginally and 'expulsion' of the device was assumed. Some 4 years la

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine contraception is a first-line option for young women, yet relatively few prospective studies have been performed in nulliparous women using currently available devices, and many providers are still reluctant to provide this option.
METHODS: Between January 2012 and June 2014, 109 nulliparous women, aged 18-30 years, who had an intrauterine device (IUD) placed at a student health clinic [88 levonorgestrel-intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) users and 21 Cu T 380A (IUD) users] were surveyed at 1, 6, 12 and 18 months after insertion.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a "mini" version of the frameless intrauterine system (IUS; GyneFix), which has a copper surface area of approximately 200 mm(2). The small GyneFix version consists of four copper cylinders instead of six and is only 2 cm long.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 392 insertions were performed in an open nonrandomized study in parous (76%) and nulligravid/nulliparous (24%) women in Belgium and China. This interim analysis reports on 13,699 women-months of use. All women were followed-up for a minimum of 12 months, up to 3 years and

OBJECTIVE: To examine the evidence regarding the safety and effectiveness of intrauterine devices (IUDs) in women with uterine abnormalities.
METHODS: We searched PubMed for all peer-reviewed articles in any language that had been published on the topic from database inception to September 2009. Primary research articles were included if they addressed the safety or effectiveness of any type of IUD among women with Müllerian anomalies or uterine synechiae.
RESULTS: In total, 19 case reports or case series met the inclusion criteria. Reported complications included expulsion, pregnancy, bleed

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device (IUD), being a reversible and effective contraception method, is the most widely used worldwide. This study aims to demonstrate the efficacy of IUD insertion during elective lower segment cesarean section (LSCS) versus its insertion six weeks postpartum.
METHODS: A cohort study was conducted on 200 women planned for elective cesarean delivery and desired IUD as a contraceptive method. They were allocated into two groups; group I, in which IUD was inserted during LSCS, and group II, in which IUD was inserted six weeks or more after LSCS. Both groups were com

Early sexual activity in young women has created new problems in contraception and gynecologic pathology for physicians. None of the existing birth control methods seems ideally adapted to the young: oran contraceptives, the only infallible method, may present adverse effects. Intrauterine devices may result in expulsion or infection. Diaphragms or spermicides are less effective and not always well accepted by young girls. The physician, however, must bear in mind that whatever inconvenience may result, birth control is always preferable to an unwanted pregnancy or to abortion. Given the seemi

BACKGROUND: Postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices (PPIUCD) are increasingly included in many national postpartum family planning (PPFP) programs, but satisfaction of women who have adopted PPIUCD and complication rates need further characterization. Our specific aims were to describe women who accepted PPIUCD, their experience and satisfaction with their choice, and complication of expulsion or infection.
METHODS: We studied 2,733 married women, aged 15-49 years, who received PPIUCD in sixteen health facilities, located in eight states and the national capital territory of India, at t

Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is common choice for contraception. Migration of IUCD is one of the complications that are encountered. Here we report a case of IUCD migration to the sigmoid colon. A 39-year-old Malay lady carrying a copper T type of IUCD presented with missing thread then underwent examination under anaesthesia, proceeded to hysteroscopy but failed removal. Abdominal ultrasound detected it in the left lower quadrant of abdomen. She then underwent diagnostic laparoscopy where the device was found to be embedded in the sigmoid colon. Technical difficulty necessitated c

OBJECTIVE: An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective and prevalent form of birth control with a low failure rate. It is not without complications, including irregular bleeding and pelvic pain, perforation, expulsion, and pregnancy. Investigation of the symptomatic patient and routine follow-up of asymptomatic women with IUDs include transvaginal ultrasonography to rule out IUD malposition and other complications. Three-dimensional ultrasonography (3DUS) has been shown to have added value in imaging the pelvic organs, including the uterus. However, even with 3DUS, the operator may enco

INTRODUCTION: The intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) are widely used forms of long-acting reversible contraception. Occasionally, IUD/IUS users have an ultrasound scan that shows a low-lying IUD/IUS or an IUD/IUS is found incidentally on scan to be low-lying within the uterus. No formal guidelines exist on the clinical implications of this scenario or the most appropriate management. We report here on a systematic review of the literature.
METHODS: A search of the online database PubMed was performed to identify articles relating to low-lying or malpositioned IUD/IUS.

PURPOSE: Approximately 21 days after an abortion, ovulation occurs in 50 % of women. Installation of an IUD directly after induced or spontaneous abortion offers immediate contraceptive protection. The purpose of the present study was to weigh up contraceptive safety and adverse reactions of IUD inserted directly after first-trimester abortion under general or paracervical anesthesia as against the fitting of IUD in the days of the next menstrual cycle without anesthesia.
METHOD: During the period May 1987 to October 2010, 73 women (Group A) underwent an immediate post-abortion insertion IUD

OBJECTIVE: China's family planning program focuses on younger women. Women older than 50 years, especially those in rural areas, are ineligible for free services and often have few other care options. Few studies have examined the sexual and reproductive health demands and unmet needs of these women.
METHODS: This cross-sectional, interviewer-administered survey included 1,652 rural women aged 50 to 64 years from seven provinces in China. We examined women's sexual and reproductive health status, knowledge, and service demands, and whether they still had an intrauterine device (IUD).

The use of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is often accompanied by various complications, the perforation of the uterus constituting the most dangerous. Here we report the case of a patient who complained of abdominal pains. She had had an IUD inserted 15 months previously. Three months later, as she could no longer see the IUD strings at the external os of the cervix, she underwent pelvic ultrasonography, which did not show the IUD in the uterine cavity. A diagnosis of expulsion of the IUD was made. A few months later, the patient accidentally became pregnant, and decided to have a
