The Crisis Intervention Ward relocated from a general hospital to a psychiatric hospital in Basel, Switzerland, on May 26, 2023. We hypothesize that this relocation influenced patient demographics, frequencies of main diagnoses, involuntary admissions, transfer rates, clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and clinician perceptions of the treatment setting. We compared two patient cohorts: one from a 12 month period pre-relocation and the other from a 12 month period post-relocation. Two outpatient clinician surveys-one conducted pre- and one post-relocation-assessed location ratings, treatm

INTRODUCTION: involuntary, idiopathic, recurrent posterior shoulder subluxation is a rare entity. Subluxation of the shoulder joint occurs with every elevation movement of the hand with a certain level of pain. Active abduction and anteflexion are possible only to 90 degrees. Only surgical treatment produces results.
GOAL: The goal is to show that timely commenced, continuously conducted rehabilitation of the shoulder after surgically repaired involuntary, idiopathic, recurrent posterior subluxation of the shoulder, leads to restitution of function. Case outline R.M. patient 24 years old, was

Drug-naive schizophrenic patients lacked abnormal involuntary movements. Chronic neuroleptic treatment was associated in 4% of the cases with Tardive Dyskinesia (TD). These findings suggest that schizophrenia, at least in its early stages, is not contributing to the appearance of Tardive Dyskinesia, and also underscore the importance of using the lowest effective neuroleptico dose to reduce the risk of that syndrome.

Diabetic striatopathy is a rare, acute neurological complication of diabetes mellitus which presents with non-ketotic hyperglycemia and involuntary movements, specifically hemichorea or hemiballismus. Striatal abnormalities on neuroimaging have been reported in most, but not all cases. This case report aims to increase awareness that diabetic striatopathy can be a presenting symptom of diabetes mellitus. A 92-year-old Filipino female with no history of diabetes presented with acute onset of focal clonic flexion of the left upper extremity for a few hours, which progressed to right hemifacial s

Dissociation is a cognitive process that disrupts consciousness, identity, or memory. It is frequently used as a form of defense in response to significant stress or trauma. In serious situations, it might show as a dissociative disorder, which extremely impairs psychological functioning. Dissociative trance, a type of other specified dissociative disorder (OSDD), is characterized by an abrupt loss of awareness, leading to unresponsiveness and involuntary actions. Despite being conscious, the individual may feel separated from their body, as if it were under the control of an external force. T

Palatal myoclonus is a rare condition in which there are rhythmic jerky movements of the soft palate and sometimes of the other muscles innervated by the brainstem A particularly annoying symptom is a rhythmic clicking sound in the ear due to the opening and closing of the Eustachian tube. Orofacial buccal dystonia is a focal dystonia with sustained spasms of the masticatory, facial or lingual muscles. The frequent symptoms of this disease have mainly been reported to be involuntary and possibly painful jaw opening, closing, deflecting and retruding, or a combination of the above. However, the

This article reviews the current literature supporting the use of botulinum toxin in producing symmetric facial features and reducing unwanted, involuntary movements. Methods, protocols, and adverse events are discussed. Additionally, the authors suggest that using botulinum toxin A therapy in postparalytic facial synkinesis can provide long-term results when used in conjunction with other treatment modalities.

Myoclonus is defined as sudden, brief, shock-like, involuntary movements caused by muscular contractions or inhibitions. Etiologic classification organizes the myoclonus disorders and provides major categories of clinical presentation. However, classifying myoclonus according to its source provides insight about its pathophysiology. The best strategy for symptomatic treatment is derived from defining the pathophysiology by way of source physiologic classification.

Despite advances in treatments, relapses in schizophrenia still occur. The causes of relapse are not always apparent, especially for patients that are compliant with medication. One possibility is that the brain adapts to long-term antipsychotic drug treatment, leading to tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. This has been described as supersensitivity psychosis. Tardive dyskinesia is also thought to occur as a consequence of dopamine supersensitivity caused by chronic treatment with antipsychotics. Another associated feature is sensitivity to life stress. This study investigated the relationship

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate oral prosultiamine treatment in patients with overactive bladder accompanied by human T-lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis.
METHODS: This was a prospective, single-center, open-label study. Patients received oral prosultiamine (300 mg) once daily in the morning, and the overactive bladder symptom score and urine levels of overactive bladder-related biomarkers (nerve growth factor/creatinine and adenosine triphosphate/creatinine) 12 weeks after the initial administration were compared with the baseline values. PURPOSE: Providing effective treatment for immigrants is an increasing challenge for mental health services across Europe. Yet, little is known as to whether current practice is associated with different outcomes in migrant and non-migrant patients. We compared outcomes of inpatient psychiatric treatment for migrants and non-migrants in a sample from five European countries.
METHODS: Patients with psychotic disorders, affective disorders or anxiety/somatisation disorders admitted to routine psychiatric inpatient treatment were assessed in hospitals in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Poland and the U

BACKGROUND: Psychological traumatic events, such as war or road traffic accidents, are widespread. A small but significant proportion of survivors develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Distressing, sensory-based involuntary memories of trauma (henceforth 'flashbacks') are the hallmark symptom of PTSD. Understanding the development of flashbacks may aid their prevention. This work is the first to combine the trauma film paradigm (as an experimental analogue for flashback development) with neuroimaging to investigate the neural basis of flashback aetiology. We investigated the hypothesi

Tremor is a hyperkinetic movement disorder that consists of rhythmic, involuntary oscillatory movement of a body part. It may be present at birth or develop later during childhood. Pediatric tremor may be an isolated disorder or a sign of an underlying genetic and/or neurologic disease. This review provides a summary of the features and classification of pediatric tremors, recommended clinical evaluation, and currently available treatments.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is increasingly recognized as a comorbid psychiatric condition in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the overlap of behavioral characteristics between these disorders raises many diagnostic challenges. Moreover, recognizing symptoms in ASD patients with medium-low functioning might be difficult. Literature on this argument is poor, especially for children. Case presentation. We report the case of an ASD patient with low cognitive functioning, who presented a complex symptomatology, characterized by progressive regression with loss of autonomy and involuntary movements th

Chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited syndrome with heterogeneous symptoms, which makes it a challenge for early diagnosis. The mutation of VPS13A is considered intimately related to the pathogenesis of ChAc. To date, diverse mutation patterns of VPS13A, consisting of missense, nonsense, and frameshift mutations, have been reported. In this study, we first report a clinical case that was misdiagnosed as epilepsy due to recurrent seizures accompanied by tongue bite for 9 months, which was not rectified until seizures were controlled and involuntary orolingual move

We report a case of persistent chorea as a manifestation of thyrotoxicosis. The chorea was severe and persisted after the patient was rendered euthyroid. Dopamine antagonists only partially suppressed the involuntary movements during the first few months. It was eventually controlled with haloperidol, but whenever she discontinues the treatment the chorea has returned during the 16 months since she first presented.

OBJECTIVE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established treatment for severe manifestations of mental illness. This study examined trends in ECT use in Denmark from 2017 to 2025 using nationwide data from the Danish National Patient Register.
METHODS: The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
RESULTS: The use of voluntary ECT increased from 2017 to 2019, after which it plateaued. It was the number of patients treated that increased rather than the number of treatments per patient. The increase was not explained by population growth, ie, the number of patients treated volu

Ear dyskinesia, also known as "moving ear syndrome," is a rare movement disorder characterized by involuntary, rhythmic, or semi-rhythmic contractions of the external ear muscles. The condition is not well-documented in the medical literature, with only a few case reports available. We present the case of a 37-year-old teacher from Saudi Arabia who developed a history of sudden, progressive involuntary movement of the posterior head region, provoking movement of the external ears, over the course of one year. The movements were non-rhythmical, more prominent on the right side, and associated w
