The clinical and pathologic findings of a patient with an unusual cavitary melanocytoma of the ciliary body are presented. Clinically and with ultrasonography the lesion appeared to have a cystic component. Differential diagnoses included a malignant melanoma or a cyst, and the lesion was excised by iridocyclectomy.

A microsurgical technique of trabeculoiridocyclectomy for malignant tumors of the iris extending to the angle and ciliary body has been reported. With this technique, the lamellar dissection of the sclera anteriorly into the corneal stroma across the limbus permits excision of the trabecula which is involved with the tumor. In addition, the en bloc excision of the lesion avoids the necessity for a corneo-scleral graft because the outer lamellae are preserved. The ultimate value of this procedure must await long-term follow-up in operated cases.

Our discussion of adenocarcinomas arising from the ciliary and iris epithelium, based upon a case report and a review of the literature, attempts summarize what little is known about these tumors. BACKGROUND: The breast cancer metastasis is the most common intraocular tumor in females. Aim of this study was to determine incidence and risk factors for intraocular metastasis and to evaluate the benefit of an early treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 151 patients suffering from metastatic breast cancer were screened for the presence of intraocular metastasis. The medical history and the tumor status at the time of screening were evaluated and risk factors for intraocular metastasis were determined. A case is presented of an intraocular T-cell lymphoma mimicking a ring melanoma of the iris and being the first manifestation of systemic disease. A 51-year-old woman was referred with an anterior uveitis, initially presenting as a granulomatous iritis. The level of immunoglobulins M, G, A in 30 patients with uveal melanoblastomas has been compared with results after treatment, different cellular types of uveal melanomas before enucleation and in various terms after it. It was found that for prognosing the outcomes of tumors the determination of the level of immunoglobulins M and G proved to be informative. It becomes lower after combined treatment; higher in spindle cell melanomas, than in mixed and epithelioid ones; lower in the patients survived, than in cases with a lethal outcome.

A male patient with classical neurofibromatosis is reported. Examination of the other family members revealed 2 patients with solitary cutaneous neurofibromas and 2 with one or more Lisch nodules without other cutaneous or systemic signs of neurofibromatosis. This suggests that Lisch nodules can be a marker for the neurofibromatosis gene in otherwise unaffected family members.

During the 25-year period 1955 to 1979, 29 cases of malignant melanoma of the choroid and ciliary body, and 4 cases of melanoma of the iris, were diagnosed in Iceland. Excluding the iris melanomas, the annual incidence rate per 100 000, adjusted to standardized Icelandic population, was 0.7 in males and 0.5 in females. The reports of checking tumor marker in the aqueous humor for diagnosis of metastatic intraocular tumors are few. Here, we report a case of masquerade syndrome with secondary glaucoma in which a high carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in the aqueous humor could assist diagnosis, and continuing targeted therapy and trabeculectomy were effective.

Surgical placement of eye plaque brachytherapy (EPB) is the standard of care for the treatment of uveal melanomas, including iris/iridociliary melanomas. However, unique challenges exist in anterior EPB placement. Here, we describe a surgical technique for anterior EPB placement when placement requires plaque positioning onto the cornea. Fourteen cases with retinoblastoma has been histologic studied. In eleven cases of them has been observed the invasion in the neighbour structures following the tumoral mass development: four cases in the vitreous, one case in the vitreous and the choroid, sclera and the optic nerve, one case in the vitreous choroid and optic nerve, two cases in the optic nerve. The tumoral invasion in the neighbour structures was observed only at the undifferentiated retinoblastoma.

Melanomas diagnosed in 29 cats over an 11 year period included 19 ocular (16 intraocular, three palpebral), five oral, and five dermal melanomas.
