Diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia in the elderly.

PURPOSE: To determine the value of serum ferritin, mean cell volume, transferrin saturation, and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin in the diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia in the elderly. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied consecutive eligible and consenting anemic patients over the age of 65 years, who underwent blood tests and bone marrow aspiration. The study consisted of 259 inpatients and outpatients at two community hospitals in whom a complete blood count processed by the hospital laboratory demonstrated previously undiagnosed anemia (men: hemoglobin level less than 12 g/dL

Latent iron deficiency anaemia in schistosomiasis.

This study was carried on 60 male patients, 20 have simple intestinal mansoniasis, 20 have simple urinary bilharziasis and 20 have hepatosplenic mansoniasis. Latent iron deficiency anaemia, defined as those having normal Hb content (greater than 13 g/dl) and low serum ferritin (less than 15 ng/mL). Such latent anaemia was found in 35% of cases with simple mansoniasis, 20% of cases with simple urinary bilharziasis but not in any case with hepatosplenic mansoniasis. Also it was associated with mild intensity of infection.

Angiodysplasia as a cause of iron deficiency anaemia.

Angiodysplasia, a condition of unknown aetiology, is thought to represent the commonest cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, particularly in the elderly population. The lesions of angiodysplasia, which are small (less than 5 mm) and usually multiple, consist of microvascular abnormalities in the mucosa and submucosa of the bowel wall. They are most commonly found in the caecum and right side of the colon, but have been observed in the stomach, ileum and elsewhere in the colon. The diagnosis is made by either selective visceral angiography and/or colonoscopy, but the lesions cannot be de

Relative iron deficiency in hereditary spherocytosis.

Seventy-three patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS) (58 nonsplenectomized, 15 splenectomized) were studied to evaluate iron status and the adequacy of iron availability for erythropoiesis. Splenectomized patients, who had hemoglobin levels in the normal or upper normal range, had higher levels of serum iron, transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin than normal matched controls and normal zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP) levels. On the contrary, nonsplenectomized patients presenting with mild to severe anemia had higher red cell ZnPP concentrations than both splenectomized subjects and matche

Is trichuriasis associated with iron deficiency anemia?

We performed quantitative fecal examinations, hemograms, and serum iron determinations on 103 first-grade children from Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, to determine whether trichuriasis was associated with iron deficiency and anemia. Although hemoglobin values tended to be slightly lower in Trichuris-infected children, there was no association between trichuriasis and serum iron or transferrin saturation values. These data demonstrate that in lightly infected children such as the population studied trichuriasis is not associated with iron deficiency anemia.

Catecholamines in adult iron deficiency patients.

Patients with iron deficiency whether uncomplicated or associated with other types of anemias, had plasma catecholamine levels which were significantly increased above normal controls. Patients with a variety of other anemias had no significant increase in catecholamine levels. Plasma catecholamine levels in uncomplicated iron deficient patients approached normal values as early as 3 h following oral FeSO4.

Mechanisms of Thrombocytosis in Iron-Deficiency Anemia.

Iron-deficiency anemia is frequently accompanied by reactive thrombocytosis, yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain incompletely understood. Beyond impaired erythropoiesis, iron availability has emerged as an active regulator of hematopoietic lineage decisions. This review synthesizes current evidence on how iron deficiency influences megakaryocytic-erythroid balance, with emphasis on progenitor-level regulation, iron sensing pathways and downstream megakaryocyte maturation. We discuss experimental and clinical studies supporting compensatory hematopoietic responses under iron-d

Investigating Iron Deficiency Anaemia in the Elderly.

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is often attributed to gastrointestinal (GI) blood loss and warrants thorough investigation. In elderly, endoscopy carries increased risk, especially in those with multiple comorbidities and poor functional status. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of elderly patients with IDA, identify underlying causes, and assess one-year mortality. METHODOLOGY: Patients ≥75 years referred to gastroenterology for investigation of IDA were recruited. Demographics, comorbidities, antiplatelet/antithrombotic use, investigations performed, and one-year mortal

Iron Deficiency Anemia in Asthmatic Children.

This letter responds to the article "The Effect of Iron Deficiency Anemia on Emergency Department Admission in Asthmatic Children" by Selmanoglu et al. highlighting important limitations in their findings. The authors' retrospective study identified a significant association between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and increased emergency department admissions for asthma exacerbations in asthmatic children. However, the letter emphasizes the need to consider potential confounding factors such as socioeconomic status and nutritional intake, which may influence both anemia and asthma severity. Addit

Association between iron deficiency and fertility.

INTRODUCTION: This retrospective, observational cohort study investigated the association between treatment of iron deficiency with conception results and pregnancy outcomes in women with infertility and iron deficiency, before and after intravenous ferric carboxymaltose infusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected from electronic health records from the Dextra Fertility Clinic (Helsinki, Finland) between 2015 and 2020. The cohort included 292 women (<43 years) with infertility and iron deficiency (s-ferritin ≤30 μg/L), treated with a ferric carboxymaltose infusion (Ferinject®, 500 mg

Iron Deficiency Anemia: Evaluation and Management.

Iron deficiency anemia is common worldwide. In adult patients without inflammation, a ferritin level of less than 45 ng/mL or ferritin level of 46 to 99 ng/mL plus a transferrin saturation of less than 20% is diagnostic of iron deficiency. In patients with inflammation, a ferritin level of less than 100 ng/mL is diagnostic. Risk factors for iron deficiency anemia include low socioeconomic status, female sex, age younger than 5 years, and chronic inflammation. Underlying causes should be investigated. Recurrent blood loss is responsible for 94% of cases. In younger patients with a plausible cau
