Worker exposure to MDI (methylenediphenyl isocyanate) in the sprayed-on truck bed lining industry was assessed by examining Washington State OSHA inspection files and industrial insurance records. The industry uses MDI to form a protective urethane coating on pick-up truck beds. The lining is applied by a worker using a handheld spray gun with application equipment at temperatures and pressures specified by the urethane supplier. A probe with an isothiocyanate group was synthesized and evaluated for its H2S sensing ability. Upon addition of H2S, the probe exhibited ratiometric properties during absorption with a red-shift. The probe exhibited fluorescent off-on responses towards H2S via the ESIPT process, due to the conversion of isocyanate into amine. A comprehensive eye checkup programme was carried out in 1140 cases of affected community to evaluate the exposure response and exposure effect with Methyl Isocynate on human eyes. The final evaluation of these cases was made with standard control group of same socioeconomic status in a non-gas affected slum area of Bhopal. The main chronic lesions noticed were chronic conjunctivitis, refractive changes, deficiency of tear secretion and persistent corneal opacities of various forms.
