The incidence and nature of haemoglobinopathies were investigated at birth in Martinique, where 4635 samples of umbilical cord blood were examined. Conventional blood values were determined, and a new, extremely simple and highly selective test was performed: isoelectric focalization. Abnormalities were found in 14.3% of blood samples, viz: A/S 7.25%, A/C 3.17%, S/S 0.17%, S/C 0.24%, C/C 0.04%, other mutations 0.63% alpha-thalassaemia minor (alpha 1-thal) 1.72% and isolated microcytosis 1.01%. A modified ELISA for the detection of toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1) from staphylococcal isolates is described. It displayed 100% correlation with the procedure based on isoelectric focusing and microslide precipitation. Commercially available immunoglobulins exhibited high antitoxin titres and it is suggested that they be used therapeutically.

Sera from seventy chickens of several inbred lines were screened by cellulose acetate electrophoresis for abnormalities of immunoglobulin production. IgG levels in two sera (both from apparently healthy birds) were unusually high. The IgG proteins purified from these two sera were shown, by isoelectric focusing, to be of restricted heterogeneity.

Five glycosidases, alpha-fucosidase, alpha-galactosidase, alpha-glucosidase, beta-mannosidase and N-acetyl-alpha-glucosaminidase were studied in human skin fibroblast cultures. The pH-dependency, kinetic properties of the enzymes and results of isoelectric focusing and ion exchange chromatography are presented. Production of erythrogenic toxin type B by Streptococcus pyogenes strain T19 was found to be strongly dependent on the pH of the cultivation medium. Maximum yields (greater than 100 mg of toxin/1) were obtained at pH 6.0. In contrast no toxin production was serologically detectable at pH values above 6.5. Two patients with subacute sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy were found to have benign gammopathies. They both responded to treatment by plasmapheresis. We suggest that a vigorous search for a paraprotein should be made in all undiagnosed patients presenting with peripheral neuropathy, including electrophoresis with isoelectric focusing. Plasmapheresis may be a treatment modality that should be explored in such cases.

Approximately 10% (89 isolates) of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated in 1985 from patients in intensive care units in Clermont-Ferrand exhibited a complex resistance phenotype towards antibiotics. Fifty-eight sera of subjects with suspected farmer's lung disease (FLD) were tested by double immunodiffusion and ELISA for the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies against Micropolyspora faeni. By comparing the two methods, we obtained a high concordance of results for IgG, but not so high for IgM. ELISA is therefore a sensitive and specific test in determining antibody concentration.
