Role of the microbiology laboratory in the diagnosis of opportunistic infections in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Patients with defects in the immune system caused by infection with human immunodeficiency virus are predisposed to a variety of opportunistic infections, many of which can be diagnosed by conventional or special microbiological procedures. This article reviews the laboratory diagnosis of bloodstream, lower respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous system infections in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Laboratories serving health care facilities in which a large number of patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection are cared for should consider e

[Evaluation of bacteriological research data and laboratory symptoms of infection in the diagnosis of congenital and acquired infections].

The predisposition of the newborns to contract infections diseases is dependent upon the limited efficiency of their immune mechanisms. Congenital infections amount to 5.7% in the research material, and the acquired infections 1.15%. The isolation of the microorganism is the basis for treating infections-the profiles of the pathogenic bacterial in flora were subjected to analysis. Im generalised infections Stafphylococcus epidermidis makes 56.6% and E. Coli accounts for 87.5 of the infections of the urinary system. In our research the late sepsis and pneumonia are more frequently the result of

New laboratory predictive tools in deep neck space infections.

INTRODUCTION: Deep neck space infections (DNSIs) are a group of infective suppurative diseases involving deep neck spaces and cervical fascia. Necrotising and septic evolutions are rare, but severe complications can dramatically affect the prognosis and should be promptly managed. Clinical examination often has low sensitivity, although instrumental diagnosis may delay te treatment. We investigated two laboratory tools, LRINEC (Laboratory Risk Indicator for the Necrotizing fasciitis) and NLR (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio), in the expectation to find a rapidly available predictive indicator t

[Experience of application of IgY-technology for laboratory diagnostics of viral infections.].

INTRODUCTION: The well-known advantages of class Y antibodies (IgY) from egg yolks of immunized hens in comparison with class G antibodies (IgG) of laboratory animals traditionally used in laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases determine the stable interest of researchers in using IgY for these purposes (IgY technology). Over the past 20 years, the obvious benefits of IgY technology have been demonstrated for a number of viral and bacterial infections. Goals and objectives. Construction of ELISA systems based on specific IgY for laboratory diagnosis of infections caused by tick-borne ence

Updated Czech guidelines for the laboratory diagnosis of Clostridium difficile infections.

Clostridium difficile, a causative agent of intestinal infections (CDI) of varying severity, is an important nosocomial pathogen. Microbiological diagnosis, including an appropriate test algorithm and the corresponding interpretation of the results, is crucial for CDI confirmation. This update is based on the European guidance document for CDI laboratory diagnosis, taking into account the current CDI epidemiology and laboratory diagnostic approaches in the Czech Republic. Any diarrhoeal patient should be tested for CDI. The rectal swabs can only be used for testing in patients with paralytic i

Surveillance of catheter-related infections: the supplementary role of the microbiology laboratory.

BACKGROUND: The burden of catheter-related infections (CRIs) in developing countries is severe. In South Africa, a standardised surveillance definition does not exist and the collection of catheter days is challenging. The aim of the study was to provide baseline data on the prevalence of CRIs and to describe the epidemiology of CRI events within a tertiary academic hospital. METHODS: Surveillance was laboratory-based and conducted for a six month period. A microbiologically confirmed CRBSI (MC-CRBSI) event was defined as the isolation of the same microorganism from the catheter and concomita

Laboratory diagnosis of herpesvirus infections in patients with Pemphigus vulgaris lesions.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disorder that has an etiology impacted by genetic and exogenous factors. Viral infections, in particular herpesvirus infections, have been identified as possible PV triggers which in addition cause serious complications in these patients. This study investigates the frequency of herpesvirus infections in patients with PV lesions. METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequence analyses were used to determine the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1/2, varicella-zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV)

[Laboratory criteria of systemic inflammatory syndrome by surgical abdominal infections].

Results of treatment of 116 patients with acute appendicitis, cholecystitis pancreatitis and other inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity, complicated with peritonitis in 53 cases, are analyzed. The concentrations of interleukine-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor small be, Cyrillic (TNF-6) and its soluble receptor in peripheral blood were used as systemic inflammatory response indicators. The increase of IL-6 and soluble TNF-6 receptor concentrations correlated with the augmentation of inflammatory response. The Willebrand factor with plasma activity of 180-200% can be used as an early in

Herpes simplex and varicella-zoster infections: clinical and laboratory diagnosis.

One of a dentist's most common diagnostic challenges is determining the cause of vesiculo-ulcerative disorders of the oral cavity. The most common etiology of oral vesicles is herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a less common etiology of vesicles in the oral cavity. Dentists often are able to differentiate these two viruses based on the clinical presentation of infectious symptoms; however, further laboratory testing is required to identify herpetically induced vesiculo-ulcerative lesions definitively. This article reviews the basic clinical signs and symptoms

Epidemiology, laboratory detection, and therapy of penicillin-resistant streptococcal infections.

Streptococci cause a wide range of infections in humans including respiratory tract infections, endocarditis, meningitis, bacteremias, and skin and soft tissue lesions. Mutations in the penicillin binding proteins target sites in these organisms have recently caused resistance to penicillins and cephalosporins. The passage of resistant genetic material from one streptococcal species to another has been recognized as one of the mechanisms by which this resistance has occurred and spread. Such resistance has been a particular problem in Streptococcus pneumoniae and viridans group streptococci wi

Microsporidial infections in humans: current practice and developments in laboratory diagnosis.

Microsporidia are small, intracellular parasites that infect a wide range of hosts, including vertebrates, invertebrates and fish. They were discovered more than a century ago. The first well documented human case, however, was not reported until 100 years later. Since the first case of intestinal microsporidiosis was reported in 1985, numerous cases of microsporidiosis have been reported in immunocompromised patients, especially those in the later stages of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Microsporidia also have been described in various other clinical conditions, including kera
