Influence of macro and micro minerals in the peri-parturient period on fertility in dairy cattle.

Infertility in dairy cattle is a complex, multi-factorial problem that cannot be evaluated in isolation of other diseases and disorders. Clearly there is a role for the prevention of problems in the peri-parturient period, in particular hypocalcaemia, mastitis, lameness and retained placenta (RP), that all have a negative impact on the subsequent fertility of the cow. Minerals, trace elements and vitamins play a vital role in the prevention of these disorders at this time. Macro minerals are involved in the acid base status of the dairy cow and influence calcium metabolism. The use of anionic

Exaggerated compensatory response to acute respiratory alkalosis in panic disorder is induced by increased lactic acid production.

BACKGROUND: In acute respiratory alkalosis, the severity of alkalaemia is ameliorated by a decrease in plasma [HCO(3)(-)] of 0.2 mEq/L for each 1 mmHg decrease in PaCO(2). Although hyperventilation in panic disorder patients is frequently encountered in outpatients, the drop in plasma [HCO(3)(-)] sometimes surpasses the expectation calculated from the above formula. The quantitative relationship between reduced PaCO(2) and plasma [HCO(3)(-)] in acute respiratory alkalosis has not been studied in panic disorder patients. Our objective was to provide reference data for the compensatory metabolic

Serum vitamin D concentrations at dry-off and close-up predict increased postpartum urine ketone concentrations in dairy cattle.

Vitamin D is commonly supplemented to dairy cows as vitamin D3 to support calcium homeostasis and in times of low sunlight exposure. Vitamin D has beneficial immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations fluctuated during lactation, with the lowest concentrations measured in healthy cows within 7 d of calving. However, it is unknown if serum 25(OH)D concentrations measured during the previous lactation are associated with transition diseases or health risk factors in dairy cattle. We collected serum samples from 279 dairy cattle from 5 co

The Assessment of Iodine Concentrations in Colostrum and Breast Milk Using ICP-MS: The Impact of Delivery Type, Thyroid Function and Gestational Diabetes-A Pilot Study.

Considering the spectrum of benefits of breast milk feeding, determining the essential components of an infant's only food-mother's milk-seems justified, especially in the case of those whose deficiency (e.g., iodine) may result in developmental disorders. The main aim of this study was the determination of the total iodine content of breast milk (including colostrum and mature milk). A secondary objective was to assess the influence of factors such as the type of delivery, hypothyroidism, gestational diabetes or the stage of lactation on this parameter. The study materials were colostrum and

Blood parameters in Swedish dairy herds with high or low incidence of displaced abomasum or ketosis.

Sixty dairy herds were studied to investigate the association between long-term incidence of displaced abomasum and clinical ketosis and body condition score and blood profiles, including parameters estimating energy metabolism and hepatic lipidosis in the periparturient period and early lactation. Blood samples were taken around parturition and in early lactation from cows without apparent clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders. A difference in metabolism between high and low incidence herds was shown post-partum by a lower metabolic index (the revised Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check

High CSF lactate and pyruvate content in Kearns-Sayre syndrome.

We studied lactate and pyruvate concentrations in CSF and blood of a patient with Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS), 3 patients with ocular myopathy and 11 normal control subjects. We found significant elevation of lactate and pyruvate in the CSF of the patient with KSS, suggesting a disorder of CNS lactate-pyruvate metabolism.

Histone deacetylases inhibitor trichostatin A reverses anxiety-like symptoms and memory impairments induced by maternal binge alcohol drinking in mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol exposure during development has detrimental effects, including a wide range of physical, cognitive and neurobehavioural anomalies known as foetal alcohol spectrum disorders. However, alcohol consumption among pregnant woman is an ongoing latent health problem. AIM: In the present study, the effects of trichostatin A (TSA) on emotional and cognitive impairments caused by prenatal and lactational alcohol exposure were assessed. TSA is an inhibitor of class I and II histone deacetylases enzymes (HDAC), and for that, HDAC4 activity was determined. We also evaluated mechanisms

Multiple low-level exposures: Hg interactions with co-occurring neurotoxic substances in early life.

All chemical forms of Hg can affect neurodevelopment; however, low levels of organic Hg (methylmercury-MeHg and ethylmercury-EtHg in Thimerosal-containing vaccines, hereafter 'TCV') exposures during early life (pregnancy and lactation) co-occur with other environmental neurotoxic substances. These neurotoxicants may act in parallel, synergistically, or antagonistically to Hg. Nevertheless, the risks of neurotoxicity associated with multiple neuro-toxicants depend on type, time, combinations of exposure, and environmental and/or genetic-associated factors. Neurological developmental disorders,

Gestational and lactational exposure to di-isobutyl phthalate via diet in maternal mice decreases testosterone levels in male offspring.

Phthalates are a large family of ubiquitous environmental chemicals suspected of being endocrine disruptors, with exposure to these chemicals during prenatal and postnatal development possibly resulting in reproductive disorders. Di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) is widely used in consumer and industrial products, and although its exposure in the general population has increased in recent years, the mechanisms behind DiBP-induced reproductive disorders in male offspring remain unclear. Here, pregnant mice were exposed to 0 or 450 mg/kg bw/day DiBP via diet from gestation day (GD) 0 to GD21. Until p

Genetic analysis of fertility-related diseases and disorders in Norwegian Red cows.

Heritability of and genetic correlations among silent heat (SH), cystic ovaries (CO), metritis (MET), and retained placenta (RP) were inferred. These traits were chosen because they are the 4 most frequent fertility-related diseases and disorders among first-lactation cows in Norway. Records of 503,683 first-lactation daughters of 1,058 Norwegian Red sires with first calving from 2000 through 2006 were analyzed with a 4-variate threshold sire model. Presence or absence of each of the 4 diseases was scored as 1 or 0 based on whether or not the cow had at least 1 veterinary treatment for the dis

ADSA Foundation Scholar Award. Biology of dairy cows during the transition period: the final frontier?

The transition period, from 3 wk before to 3 wk after parturition, is critically important to health, production, and profitability of dairy cows. Most health disorders occur during this time. Compared with other stages of the lactation cycle, relatively little is known about fundamental biological processes during the transition period. The regulation and coordination of lipid metabolism among adipose tissue, liver, gut, and mammary gland are key components of the adaptations to lactation. Lipid accumulation in liver may contribute to health disorders and decreased milk production. Knowledge

Clinical characteristics and response to sodium lactate of patients with infrequent panic attacks.

Nine patients with panic attacks too infrequent to meet DSM-III criteria for panic disorder were compared to 20 panic disorder patients with respect to clinical characteristics and response to sodium lactate infusion. The two groups showed similar clinical characteristics and response to lactate. The authors conclude that patients with infrequent panic attacks are clinically and biologically similar to those with panic disorder and discuss implications for the diagnosis of panic states.

Incidence of metabolic disorders and reproductive performance following a short (35-d) or conventional (60-d) dry period management in commercial Holstein herds.

A total of 850 Holstein cows from 13 commercial dairy herds were involved in the present study to compare the effects of 2 different dry period (DP) management strategies on health and reproductive parameters. Cows were assigned to either a short (SDP; 35-d) or a conventional (CDP; 60-d) DP management within each herd, based on previous 305-d milk yield, parity (414 primiparous and 436 multiparous), and estimated calving interval. Cows assigned to CDP were fed a dry cow ration from dry-off until 21 d prepartum, and were then switched to a precalving ration. Cows assigned to SDP were fed the pr

New-onset Graves' disease in the postpartum period.

During routine evaluation for lactation failure, hyperthyroidism was discovered in a postpartum woman. Although postpartum thyroiditis and Hashimoto's disease are relatively more common than Graves' disease during the postnatal period, this young woman was found to have new-onset Graves' disease. Distinguishing between normal postpartum symptoms and thyroid disorders can be challenging. Utilizing history, physical examination, and laboratory testing, the provider can identify the etiology of hyperthyroidism during the postpartum period. Treatment options differ depending on the cause of the th

Effect of pre- and postnatal alcohol consumption on GABA levels of various brain regions in the rat offspring.

The effect of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy and lactation on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in different rat brain regions of 3-week-old pups was investigated. There was a significant decrease in the thalamus, pons, cerebellum and hippocampus, no change in posterior colliculus, occipital cortex, temporal cortex, hypothalamus, septum or striatum and a significant increase in frontal cortex, olfactory bulbs, anterior colliculus and amygdala. These modifications could be a consequence of alterations in membrane permeability and may be related to the behavioural disorders as

Perinatal stress exposure induced oxidative stress, metabolism disorder, and reduced GLUT-2 in adult offspring of rats.

PURPOSE: Growing evidence has demonstrated that adversity in early life, especially in the prenatal and postnatal period, may change the programming of numerous body systems and cause the incidence of various disorders in later life. Accordingly, this experimental animal study aimed to investigate the effect of stress exposure during perinatal (prenatal and/or postnatal) on the induction of oxidative stress in the pancreas and its effect on glucose metabolism in adult rat offspring. METHODS: In this experimental study based on maternal exposure to variable stress throughout the perinatal peri

Brain metabolic changes during lactate-induced panic: effects of gabapentin treatment.

Six subjects with panic disorder underwent sodium lactate infusions in conjunction with magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) at study entrance when actively symptomatic and after clinical improvement while under treatment with gabapentin. MRSI was used to serially measure regional brain lactate levels from an axial section at the level of the lateral ventricles at baseline, during lactate infusion and postlactate infusion. Gabapentin treatment appeared to be effective in blocking a lactate-induced panic response but did not alter the magnitude or time course of an abnormal brain lac

Optimizing the treatment of mood disorders in the perinatal period.

The perinatal period is a time of high risk for women with unipolar and bipolar mood disorders. We discuss treatment considerations for perinatal mood disorders, including unipolar and bipolar depression as well as postpartum psychosis. We further explore the unique issues faced by women and their families across the full trajectory of the perinatal period from preconception planning through pregnancy and following childbirth. Treatment of perinatal mood disorders requires a collaborative care approach between obstetrics practitioners and mental health providers, to ensure that a thoughtful ri
