The popularity of herbal remedies is on the rise, but this often comes at the expense of general knowledge about non-native species. The frequency and versatility of the use of medicinal plants does not depend on their origin, while the use of species with proven efficacy is much more intensive. The most abundant plant families, according used taxa and use records, are Asteraceae, Rosaceae and Lamiaceae. The greatest consensus is on the choice of taxa suitable for the treatment of bloating/flatulence and diarrhea, most commonly treated with Carum carvi L. fruit tea and dried or fresh berries o…

BACKGROUND: Thymbra capitata is a Mediterranean aromatic shrub that is extensively used to produce essential oils and phenolic antioxidants. Despite having a chemical profile that varies with phenological stage, most previous studies have been based on single or few harvests, giving only a fixed perspective of metabolism. As a result, the ontogenetic control of essential oil production, monoterpene formation, and antioxidant-related metabolism throughout the entire vegetation cycle has been poorly clarified. The aim of this study was to measure such changes in these characteristics over sequen

Sesterterpenoids with monocarbocyclic skeletons are key biosynthetic intermediates but are rarely isolated in plants. Herein, we report the discovery of 31 plant-derived monocarbocyclic sesterterpenoids, precolquhounoids, from the Lamiaceae shrub Colquhounia coccinea var. mollis. These isolates exhibit remarkable structural diversity, encompassing α-ketol regioisomers, spirolactone-containing stereoisomers, and highly oxidized frameworks featuring a uniquely fused 1,3-dioxolane core. The unambiguous stereochemical assignment of these highly flexible molecules employed an integrated structural …
