Four guinea pigs from a colony of approximately 50 animals were examined for progressive neurologic disease of 5 days' duration. Signs of neurologic dysfunction included cachexia, stupor, hyperexcitability, lateral recumbency, and opisthotonos. Results of gross pathologic, microbiologic, and serologic examinations were unremarkable. Histologic examination of cerebral and cerebellar sections revealed multifocal malacia and regions of eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation. Cross-sections of nematode larvae, identified as Baylisascaris sp., most likely B. procyonis, the raccoon ascarid, were se

The authors report a case of cutaneous Larva migrans attributed to a gnathostomiasis in a Laotian man living in France since 3 years. The diagnosis was suggested on the basis of epidemiological and clinical context (he often ate raw fresh fish in Thailand) and blood eosinophilia. It was confirmed by ELISA method which showed a very high antibody titer to Gnathostoma spinigerum. The patient was treated with cortisone and diethylcarbamazine and he has remained asymptomatic since.

Visceral larva migraine syndrome in most often caused by the migration of Toxocara canis larvae in the tissues after ingestion of the embryonated eggs. The disease, characterised by granulomas, is most commonly found among children in whom it causes fever, hepatomegaly, respiratory disturbances and eosinophilia. Diagnosis is by biopsy and serum tests and prophylaxis is essential since no specific therapy exists. The case of toxocariasis described was encountered in a middle aged women and is unusual as it had lasted for several years whereas spontaneous remission is the rule.

BACKGROUND Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is caused by nematode parasites of the hookworm family of Ancylostomatidae. Ancylostomiasis is a zoonosis found in cats and dogs, and humans are an accidental host. This report presents a case of CLM in an 8-year-old boy, which was due to the zoonotic transmission of Ancylostoma caninum from domestic dogs in an urban area of Vinces, Ecuador, and demonstrates how awareness and early diagnosis contributed to the timely treatment of CLM. CASE REPORT An 8-year-old boy from the urban area of Vinces city in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador presented with a se…

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HRCLM) is caused by the penetration and migration in the epidermis of larvae of Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum. It is characterized by slightly raised and erythematous tracks, located especially on the feet. These tracks may be single or multiple, serpiginous or linear, ramified and intertwined, accompanied by pruritus. Atypical clinical presentations of HRCLM are currently more frequent than in the past. We present six patients with bullous HRCLM and discuss the possible pathogenetic factors. Furthermore, we present a review of atypic…

This study aimed at constructing a draft genome of the adult female worm Toxocara canis using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and de novo assembly, as well as to find new genes after annotation using functional genomics tools. Using an NGS machine, we produced DNA read data of T. canis. The de novo assembly of the read data was performed using SOAPdenovo. RNA read data were assembled using Trinity. Structural annotation, homology search, functional annotation, classification of protein domains, and KEGG pathway analysis were carried out. Besides them, recently developed tools such as MAKER, P

INTRODUCTION: Toxocariasis is a roundworm infection that may be associated with serious cardiac manifestations. We report one case and review another 12 cases in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old man, presented with clinical features of myopericarditis. Eosinophil count was 20,000/mm(3). The ELISA and Western Blot were positive for Toxocara canis. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and antiparasite treatment. The outcome was rapidly favorable.
DISCUSSION: In the other 12 cases, the cardiac manifestations were often severe: six myocarditis, three tamponades and three Loeffl

INTRODUCTION: Visceral larva migrans is a syndrome caused by an infection with larval helminths, which may result in partial or general pathological changes in host tissues. Due to the difficulty in finding the causative parasites, the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans is generally based on compatible clinical signs, epidemic history, marked eosinophilia and pathological examination, especially positive serological test results and the disappearance of symptoms after specific treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report here the case of a 21-year-old Chinese man who, having ingested living earth…

A 41-year-old woman who was diagnosed with myocarditis presented eosinophilia. Since the antibody against Toxocara canis (T. canis) was positive, we diagnosed that she had visceral larva migrans due to T. canis associated with myocarditis. She was treated with oral albendazole and prednisolone for two weeks, eosinophil count and hepatic enzymes were normalized after completion of treatment. This is the first report of myocarditis caused by T. canis infection in Korea.

Cutaneous larva migrans is a parasitic dermatosis imported by travelers returning from tropical and subtropical regions. In cutaneous larva migrans syndrome humans are incidental hosts and the larvae are unable to complete their natural cycle. Adult hookworms live in the intestines of dogs and cats, shedding eggs in feces that hatch and mature into larvae that can remain infective for months in the soil. Larvae penetrate the skin after contact with infected soil and cause an itchy creeping eruption. Cutaneous larva migrans is not usually associated with systemic symptoms and is rarely accompan…

Ectoparasites or epidermal parasites include a very heterogenous group of infections of the outer layers of the skin. Worldwide the most common are scabies, lice, tungiasis, and hookworm-induced cutaneous larva migrans. In recent years, bed bug infestations in hotels or vacation homes seem to have become more frequent. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are found in the facial and scalp hair follicles in 95% of individuals. Classic Demodex folliculitis is often overlooked in differential diagnostic considerations. This inflammatory sebaceous gland disease as well as Demodex blepharitis bo…

A 42-year-old man presented at our emergency department with fever, sputum, and dyspnea. His chest X-ray films showed ground-glass opacities mainly in the upper and middle lung fields. We diagnosed pneumonia, gave antibiotic treatment, and his symptoms improved. However he later showed eosinophilia. We performed additional workup, and diagnosed Toxocara canis larva migrans. We treated him with albendazole for four weeks, but his eosinophil count rose again from the end of treatment one month later. Therefore we performed additional treatment with albendazole for 8 weeks, after which the clinic…
